Description

A connected account whose verification failed shows its error as soon as the profile loads, but the error still grew and faded in as if it had just appeared.

Mosaic transitions no longer animate content that is already open on first render. useTransitionStatus and useTransition take an animateOnMount option that defaults to false, matching Base UI's animateInitialOpen. Content that opens after mount still animates. Toasts and tag-input tags opt in with animateOnMount: true because they mount open to arrive.

This covers the connected accounts verification error, other inline section and field errors, and card banners. It replaces the per-component workarounds in tabs, accordion, collapsible, flow, and reveal. Popups opened with defaultOpen no longer animate on load.

Inline messages also skip the height transition on load. useMessageHeight is undefined until its first measurement, so a message that is visible on load uses its natural height instead of growing from zero.

Walkthrough

Initially open content no longer animates by default. The transition hooks add an animateOnMount option for callers that need an entrance animation. Components now apply transition props without tracking whether they were previously closed or deselected. Feedback height remains undefined until its first measurement, allowing natural layout before measurement.

Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add regression coverage for animateOnMount.

The existing test covers only the default animateOnMount: true path. Add a test for an initially open transition with animateOnMount: false. Assert that the first render omits data-starting-style and that a later close-and-reopen still includes it. This verifies that the option affects only mount animation.

As per coding guidelines, “Unit tests are required for all new functionality.”

Suggestion: handle this inside useTransitionStatus rather than layering skipEnter state on top in useTransition.

Base UI does it with an animateInitialOpen param on useTransitionStatus (default false). It just controls the initial state, so an element that mounts open never enters 'starting'.

For us that'd be roughly:

export function useTransitionStatus(open: boolean, animateOnMount = true) {
  const [mounted, setMounted] = useState(open);
  const [transitionStatus, setTransitionStatus] = useState<TransitionStatus>(
    open && animateOnMount ? 'starting' : undefined,
  );

That drops skipEnter, its render-phase reset, and the if (!skipEnter) branch in useTransition.

Also wonder if we should default to no animations on mount like Base UI does too 🤔

Follow-up on the default: I think we should match Base UI and not animate on mount by default.

Five call sites already hand-roll the same workaround (strip data-starting-style/style until the first close):

  • primitives/tabs/tabs-panel.tsx:39
  • primitives/accordion/accordion-panel.tsx:77
  • primitives/collapsible/collapsible-panel.tsx:83
  • primitives/flow/flow-step.tsx:101
  • components/reveal/reveal.tsx:28

This PR would be a sixth. Flipping the default lets us delete all of them. The call sites that mount open to arrive would opt in with animateOnMount: true:

  • primitives/toast/toast-root.tsx:91 (open = toast.transitionStatus !== 'ending')
  • primitives/tag-input/tag-input-tag.tsx:25 (open: present)

Unverified: CardBanner (components/card/card.tsx:199) and the field error (components/field/field.tsx:246) look like they have the same on-load animation as this PR.

Side effect: popups with defaultOpen stop animating on load, same as Base UI.

Fine to land this PR as is and do the flip as a separate refactor.

@alexcarpenter Both suggestions are in 81bd9d4.

  • animateOnMount now lives in useTransitionStatus and only seeds the initial status (open && animateOnMount ? 'starting' : undefined). skipEnter, its render-phase reset, and the branch in useTransition are gone.
  • The default is false, matching Base UI's animateInitialOpen. The five hand-rolled workarounds are deleted (tabs-panel, accordion-panel, collapsible-panel, flow-step, reveal). Toast and tag-input opt in with animateOnMount: true.
  • CardBanner and the field error now get the static default. Their tests are updated.
  • useMessageHeight starts undefined instead of 0, so an inline message that's visible on load uses its natural height instead of growing from zero.

As you noted, popups with defaultOpen no longer animate on load.
