fix(openclaw): get verdicts from the daemon socket instead of spawning the CLI - #956
On OpenClaw 2026.9.6 and later, FailproofAI enforces nothing on OpenClaw and records no hook activity, while session telemetry keeps flowing, so a machine looks healthy.
Those OpenClaw releases import plugins from a copy under ~/.openclaw/tmp/plugin-captures/<id>/…/node_modules/openclaw-plugin/, and the copy holds only the plugin directory's own files. Our plugin located the CLI relative to its own file (../dist/cli.mjs, then bun ../bin/failproofai.mjs). Inside the copy neither exists, and the plugin read the failed spawn (bun exit 1 / ENOENT, with stderr and exit code never read) as allow.
Introduced by OpenClaw 2026.9.6 (2026-09-23): the capture code is absent in 2026.9.2, 2026.9.4 and 2026.8.35, and present in 2026.9.6 → 2026.10.5. The integration canary missed it because it always exported FAILPROOFAI_BINARY_OVERRIDE=/repo/dist/cli.mjs, an absolute path, so it never exercised the plugin's own lookup.
Fix
The plugin no longer spawns anything. Like the Hermes plugin, it asks failproofaid over its owner-only Unix socket:
openclaw-plugin/daemon-client.js sends the same hook request the CLI's --hook path sends (hookEvent = raw OpenClaw event, cli: "openclaw", the payload as stdin, the gateway profile's openclaw.json as agentSettingsPath) and reads the same flat {permission, reason} verdict back. Policies, payload shape and verdict mapping are unchanged.
The socket path and agentSettingsPath mirror daemonSocket() (fp-home.ts) and runtimeAgentSettingsPath("openclaw") (agent-roster.ts); tests assert parity.
openclaw-plugin/hooks.js holds the hook wiring (moved out of index.js, which is now only definePluginEntry) so it can be tested without the OpenClaw SDK.
Every module in openclaw-plugin/ imports only node built-ins and its siblings, so it works from OpenClaw's copy.
Behaviour changes
Daemon-only, like Hermes: the OpenClaw integration sets requiresHealthyDaemon, so policies --install --cli openclaw refuses without a daemon that answers.
Fail closed: when no verdict comes back (no daemon, protocol mismatch, error frame, non-zero exit, unparseable verdict, timeout), before_tool_call and before_agent_run are blocked and the reason is logged through api.logger. before_agent_finalize does not force a revise, which cannot bring the daemon back and would only loop the turn. Observation hooks log and continue.
FAILPROOFAI_BINARY_OVERRIDE and FAILPROOFAI_OPENCLAW_DEBUG no longer affect the OpenClaw plugin.
Users must restart the OpenClaw gateway after updating, so it loads the new plugin.
No changes to config --status.
Testing
New __tests__/hooks/openclaw-plugin.test.ts (32 tests): request framing and fields against a fake daemon; every non-verdict reply treated as a failure, never an allow, including an incomplete hookResult and any permission other than allow/deny/instruct (9 of these fail against the first revision); unreachable, timeout and oversized frames; parity with the CLI's path functions; the hook mapping; and a regression test that copies the plugin directory elsewhere, loads it from the copy, and gets a deny back.
bun run test:run: green apart from hermes-native-plugin.test.ts timing out once under full parallel load (passes alone; unrelated). bun run test:e2e: 364 passed, 1 skipped. tsc --noEmit and eslint clean.
Live, OpenClaw 2026.10.5 + failproofaid 1.0.12 on Linux, plugin loaded by OpenClaw from its capture copy. Probe: have the agent run the CLI's --version, which the always-on block-failproofai-commands guard must deny.
Before (stock plugin): the command ran.
After (this branch): the command was blocked; a benign echo ran normally.
Daemon socket pointed at a missing path: the turn was blocked and [failproofai] before_agent_run: failproofaid could not be reached… was written to the gateway log.
Integration canary
The canary installed hooks before its first daemon_cycle, so with the daemon now required the OpenClaw install refused, exactly as the Hermes install already did, and both probes went INCONCLUSIVE. probe-cli.sh now:
starts a setup daemon before install_hooks/wire for the daemon-only CLIs (DAEMON_ONLY_CLIS="hermes openclaw", kept equal to the requiresHealthyDaemon integrations by a test) on the live daemon leg;
keeps the installer's refusal and prints it with the verdicts instead of discarding it;
on legs with no live daemon (in-process beta, dead-daemon), reports those two CLIs as INCONCLUSIVE with the reason instead of driving them unhooked into a false silent-allow FAIL. The beta leg therefore no longer early-warns on OpenClaw pre-releases.
Compatibility across OpenClaw versions
Each row is a throwaway node:24-bookworm container (Node 24.22.1, which every listed release accepts): openclaw@<version> and failproofai@1.0.12 from npm, the plugin under test copied over the global install's openclaw-plugin/, the real failproofaid from 1.0.12's platform package, openclaw onboard with a custom OpenAI-compatible provider, the plugin registered through failproofai's own policies --install --cli openclaw, openclaw gateway run, then two real agent turns. Ground truth only: blocked = the agent was asked to run the CLI's --version into a file and the file was never written (always-on block-failproofai-commands), with the deny in the daemon's hook log; ran = a benign echo into a file was written.

The gateway logged no plugin errors in any row. (1.0.12's plugin evaluates in-process, so its denies land in the gateway's own hook log rather than the daemon's; on 2026.9.2 the agent reported Blocked Bash by failproofai … and no file was written.)
No actionable defects found. The OpenClaw plugin now sends framed hook requests to the daemon, validates replies before allowing, and fails closed on unavailable or malformed verdicts.
Changes
Replaced OpenClaw's per-hook CLI spawn with daemon Unix-socket evaluation.
Added fail-closed hook handling and daemon-only installation metadata.
Updated the integration canary, regression tests, documentation, and release metadata.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Restored OpenClaw policy enforcement for versions 2026.9.6 and later. Verdicts are requested through the FailproofAI daemon, so a missing or unavailable daemon blocks tool calls and prompts, and the reason is logged.
Documentation
OpenClaw installation requires a running FailproofAI daemon. After updating the package, restart the OpenClaw gateway to load the updated plugin.
…he CLI
OpenClaw 2026.9.6 and later import plugins from a copy under
~/.openclaw/tmp/plugin-captures/ that holds only the plugin's own directory.
The plugin located the CLI relative to its own file (../dist/cli.mjs, then
bun ../bin/failproofai.mjs), so inside the copy it spawned a file that does
not exist and read the failure as an allow: every OpenClaw tool call ran
unchecked and no hook activity was recorded, while session telemetry kept
flowing. Verified live on 2026.10.5 by an A/B with the always-on guard.
The plugin now sends failproofaid the same `hook` request the CLI's --hook
path sends (raw event, cli "openclaw", payload as stdin, the gateway
profile's openclaw.json as agentSettingsPath) over the owner-only Unix
socket, as the Hermes plugin does, and reads the same flat verdict back, so
policies and verdict mapping are unchanged. Every module in openclaw-plugin/
imports only node built-ins and its siblings.
Like Hermes it is daemon-only: install requires a healthy daemon
(requiresHealthyDaemon), and when no verdict comes back before_tool_call and
before_agent_run fail closed with the reason logged through api.logger;
before_agent_finalize does not force a revise, which would only loop the turn.

High: Reject malformed verdicts instead of treating them as allows
Rule: SEC-001
Location: openclaw-plugin/daemon-client.js:93
Evidence: readHookResult coerces a missing or non-string message.stdout to "" and returns {permission:"allow"} at line 93. It also accepts every string permission at lines 101-104. Consequently a matching-version frame with no stdout, or with stdout: {"permission":"unknown"}, resolves successfully; the tool mapper and prompt hook only block deny, so both proceed. A nested-container fake daemon reproduced both responses as ok:true. The documented HookResult protocol requires stdout, and the PR promises every non-verdict reply fails closed.
Required change: Require a complete HookResult shape (exitCode number and string stdout/stderr), and whitelist only allow, deny, and instruct; validate an optional reason as a string. Return an invalid failure for any other shape so gate hooks block, and add regression tests for missing stdout and unknown permission.
…m as allow
A hookResult frame missing stdout was read as an empty stdout, which is the
allow, and any string permission was accepted, so {"permission":"unknown"}
passed both gates (they block only on deny). Require the complete hookResult
the daemon always serializes (integer exitCode, string stdout and stderr),
accept only allow/deny/instruct, and type-check the optional reason,
policyName and policyNames; anything else is an invalid reply, so the tool
and prompt gates block. Adds regression tests for each shape, plus the two
reported cases end to end through the real daemon client. (SEC-001)

Start a healthy daemon before the OpenClaw re-install.
When this canary has no running daemon, requiresHealthyDaemon: true makes this install fail. daemon_cycle starts the daemon only after wire() returns. The command hides the error, so the probe can proceed without the intended OpenClaw enforcement. Start a healthy daemon before installation, check the install result, and stop it before testing the dead-daemon case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Medium/High Restore the OpenClaw live canary before requiring a daemon — openclaw.requiresHealthyDaemon at src/hooks/integrations.ts:2323 makes every policies --install --cli openclaw call probe the daemon. In integration-suite/probe-cli.sh, both install attempts occur during install_hooks/wire (lines 217 and 348), while daemon_cycle does not start the daemon until line 424. The script suppresses the failed install, so the gateway starts without the plugin and both probes become INCONCLUSIVE instead of testing enforcement. (src/hooks/integrations.ts:2323)
OpenClaw now requires a healthy daemon to install, as Hermes already did, but
probe-cli.sh installed hooks before its first daemon_cycle and discarded the
installer's output. On the live daemon leg (the canary box's stable leg) the
install refused, the gateway started without the plugin, and both probes went
INCONCLUSIVE instead of testing enforcement — the same state Hermes was in.
- Live daemon leg: start a setup daemon before install_hooks/wire for the
daemon-only CLIs (DAEMON_ONLY_CLIS="hermes openclaw"); each probe still
cycles a fresh daemon into its own oracle dir.
- Keep the installer's refusal and print it with the verdicts instead of
sending it to /dev/null.
- Any other leg (in-process beta, the dead-daemon leg): those CLIs cannot be
hooked at all, and driving them unhooked would score the benign side effect
as a silent-allow FAIL, so report INCONCLUSIVE with the reason and stop.
Tripwires: the shell list matches the integrations flagged
requiresHealthyDaemon, the setup daemon precedes install_hooks, the skip
happens before anything is installed or driven, and the refusal is reported.

Medium/High Allow valid one-megabyte hook payloads through the socket envelope — requestHookVerdict limits the complete JSON envelope to 1 MiB at openclaw-plugin/daemon-client.js:165, even though that envelope contains a separately JSON-encoded stdin plus routing metadata. The established CLI contract accepts raw stdin through 1,048,576 bytes (src/hooks/handler.ts:1372). An isolated container check using a 1,048,456-byte raw payload (below that limit) returned {ok:false, failure:"invalid", message:"hook request exceeds the 1 MiB limit"} before connecting. The tool and prompt gates then treat it as a missing verdict and block it. (openclaw-plugin/daemon-client.js:165)
…he envelope
The plugin capped the whole socket envelope at 1 MiB, but the envelope
carries the payload as an escaped JSON string plus routing fields, while the
CLI accepts up to 1 MiB of raw stdin (handler.ts, read-stdin.ts). A valid
payload near that limit was refused before connecting, and the gates then
blocked the call as a missing verdict. The payload is now bounded at the
CLI's 1 MiB and the envelope only by the daemon's 16 MiB frame limit; a
payload over 1 MiB is evaluated as empty, exactly as the CLI discards an
oversized stdin, and the plugin logs it rather than doing so silently.

Superseded by #958, which merges this branch in full (head 42d3daf). Checked file by file: every change here is in #958 unchanged, apart from the version, which #958 sets to the stable 1.0.13.
…dora/RHEL, Antigravity path policies (#958)
* fix(daemon): run the systemd unit from /opt, not the home directory
On Fedora, RHEL, Rocky and Alma, SELinux labels files under /home
user_home_t and gives systemd (init_t) no execute permission on that
type, so a unit whose ExecStart pointed at
~/.failproofai/bin/failproofaid-<version> failed 203/EXEC and
`failproofai config` aborted at its last step.
On Linux the install now copies the binary as root to
/opt/failproofai/<user>/bin/failproofaid-<version> (bin_t under the
policy's generic /opt/(.*/)?bin rule; restorecon re-applies it, since a
new file inherits its directory's usr_t) and points ExecStart there.
The daemon then runs as unconfined_service_t, which may run the worker's
node from ~/.nvm and accept hooks on the socket. The home copy stays for
the version checks; install prunes the /opt copy to current + one, and
uninstall removes it. macOS is unchanged.
Verified against the shipped policies (matchpathcon/sesearch on Fedora
41 and Rocky 9) and end to end on real systemd: the real daemon + worker
installed by a sudo user on Fedora 41 answers the hook and policy
probes; the root-only lifecycle suite passes on Fedora 41 and Ubuntu
24.04.
* fix(openclaw): ask failproofaid over its socket instead of spawning the CLI
(requiresHealthyDaemon), and when no verdict comes back before_tool_call and
before_agent_run fail closed with the reason logged through api.logger;
before_agent_finalize does not force a revise, which would only loop the turn.

* chore(release): 1.0.13-beta.1 for the OpenClaw socket fix
A branch beta under its own number rather than main's unpublished
1.0.13-beta.0, which main keeps for its own next cut: a dispatch publishes
whatever package.json carries, and a machine caches failproofaid per version,
so a shared number could also hand a later install the wrong daemon. Moves
package.json, the Cargo workspace version, Cargo.lock's workspace crates and
hermes-plugin/plugin.yaml together, as publish.yml's bump does, and gives the
release its own CHANGELOG section with this PR's entry.

* deps(sdk/python): bump nltk 3.10.3 -> 3.10.4 for GHSA-j456-xh4h-cpf2
Published 2026-10-28 (CVSS 8.6) against nltk 3.10.3, which sdk/python/uv.lock
pulls in through llama-index-core; the dev/test lockfile only, since the SDK
ships zero runtime dependencies. It turned OSV-Scanner red on every pull
request. Only the nltk entry moves: resolved with the uv CI uses (0.13.6, the
lockfile's revision 5) and checked with `uv lock --check`; osv-scanner with
the repo's config now reports no issues.

* fix(openclaw): limit the raw payload to 1 MiB, as the CLI does, not the envelope

* chore: bump to 1.0.13-beta.2 for the Fedora beta
1.0.13-beta.1 was published from another branch, and main's
1.0.13-beta.0 slot should stay free for main.
* fix(daemon): quote every path in the manual root recipes
When sudo is not available, `config` prints the commands to install the
service by hand and `uninstall` the commands to remove it. Since the /opt
staging change those recipes carried unquoted paths: a home directory with a
space split `sudo install -m 0755 <binary> <target>` into extra words, failing
the `&&`-joined recipe before the unit was written, and the removal recipe's
`sudo rm -rf <dir>` could be pointed at another path.
The existing POSIX `shellQuote()` moves to its own module so both files use
it (uninstall-cli's tests replace daemon-service wholesale, so it cannot be
imported from there), and every path in both recipes goes through it. A test
drives the real install path under a home with a space; it fails on the
unquoted recipe. The helper itself is checked against a real `sh`.

* chore(release): 1.0.13
Stable release of OpenClaw enforcement on OpenClaw 2026.9.6 and later (#956,
shipped as 1.0.13-beta.1) and of daemon setup on Fedora/RHEL/Rocky/Alma
(#957). Moves package.json, the Cargo workspace version, Cargo.lock's
workspace crates and hermes-plugin/plugin.yaml to 1.0.13 together, and opens
the 1.0.13 CHANGELOG section that the release's announcement step reads:
#957's entry moves out of the never-published 1.0.13-beta.0 section into it,
beside the recipe-quoting fix; the 1.0.13-beta.* sections stay as they are.

* fix(hooks): enforce path policies on Antigravity's current file tools
agy delivers read_file {Path}, write_file {Path, Content} and edit_file
{Path, Target, Replacement}. None of those keys were mapped and write_file
was not a known tool, so path policies and the always-on guard over
failproofai's own state saw no path and allowed the call.
Live on agy 1.4.12 against the unfixed code, an agent printed .env,
overwrote and edited it, created id_rsa, and overwrote
.failproofai/policies-config.json. All five are refused with this change,
and normal reads, writes and edits inside the project still go through.
The older view_file and write_to_file spellings stay mapped.
Fixes#961
* deps: override minimatch to 11.0.3 for GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249
The advisory, published 2026-10-30, covers every minimatch below 11.0.1, so
OSV-Scanner went red on every branch. Nothing here ships minimatch: it arrives
only through ESLint tooling in the root and sdk/typescript lockfiles.
The 3.x copies have no patched release, so the override crosses majors. Under
11.x require('minimatch') returns an object, so eslint-plugin-import, -jsx-a11y
and -react would throw if a rule reached their minimatch calls. The rules that
were checked are not enabled here and lint passes on the whole repo.
Pinned to 11.0.3 rather than 11.0.4, which was hours old.
* fix(uninstall): remove the staged daemon binary when the unit is already gone
uninstallDaemonService returned early with no unit, and the CLI only called it
when a unit existed. A failed install after staging, or a unit deleted by hand,
left the root-owned copy under /opt/failproofai/<user> while uninstall --purge
exited 0.
The copy is now checked independently of the unit, named in the plan, and
reported with a command to run as root if it survives. It is still removed only
after the unit: if the unit cannot be removed, the copy stays.
* fix(hooks): refuse an Antigravity file call with no recognizable path
A path key the maps do not know leaves file_path empty, so every path policy
has nothing to check and allows the call. That is how #961 stayed silent. A
Read, Write or Edit with no usable path is now denied whatever is enabled, with
a message saying to update failproofai. A session pause lifts it.
Registered from the handler rather than as a builtin: packs carry the policies,
and block-failproofai-commands is pinned never to route on Read. It registers
only for a call that lacks a path, so normal activity rows do not change. All
158 file tool calls in the local agy transcripts carry a recognized key.
The changelog also records the uninstall fix from the previous commit.
* chore(osv): drop the nltk ignore that no longer matches anything
nltk 3.10.4 is out of the advisory's range, so the scanner reports the entry as
unused. Leaving it would silently cover the advisory if the lockfile moved back.
* fix(hooks): keep the Antigravity path guard on under a pause when Cloud enforces
A session pause suspends local policy only, and Cloud policies keep running. With
the guard lifted, a pathless call would slip past a Cloud path policy that cannot
see the path either. A pause now lifts it only when no enforcing Cloud policy is
deployed. An observe-only Cloud policy decides nothing, so it does not count.
* test(daemon): keep the suites away from a machine's real daemon install
The real-systemd suite tore down with uninstall and then restored only the unit,
leaving it pointing at a deleted staged binary, and a daemon-configured machine
then denies every tool call. It now skips when a real unit is installed.
The uninstall-cli mock deleted its staged path on every test, including the
default /opt/failproofai/tester. Deletion is now off outside the suite that uses
a scratch directory.
* test(daemon): skip the real-systemd suite on any sign of a real daemon
A unit file is not the whole picture: systemd keeps a running service after its
file is deleted, and a failed install leaves a staged binary with no unit. The
suite now also skips for an active service or a staged directory.
uninstall-cli's staged path now lives in the per-test scratch directory, so a real
/opt/failproofai/tester cannot change a result.

Problem
On OpenClaw 2026.9.6 and later, FailproofAI enforces nothing on OpenClaw and records no hook activity, while session telemetry keeps flowing, so a machine looks healthy.
Those OpenClaw releases import plugins from a copy under
~/.openclaw/tmp/plugin-captures/<id>/…/node_modules/openclaw-plugin/, and the copy holds only the plugin directory's own files. Our plugin located the CLI relative to its own file (../dist/cli.mjs, thenbun ../bin/failproofai.mjs). Inside the copy neither exists, and the plugin read the failed spawn (bun exit 1 / ENOENT, with stderr and exit code never read) as allow.Introduced by OpenClaw 2026.9.6 (2026-09-23): the capture code is absent in 2026.9.2, 2026.9.4 and 2026.8.35, and present in 2026.9.6 → 2026.10.5. The integration canary missed it because it always exported
FAILPROOFAI_BINARY_OVERRIDE=/repo/dist/cli.mjs, an absolute path, so it never exercised the plugin's own lookup.Fix
The plugin no longer spawns anything. Like the Hermes plugin, it asks

No actionable defects found. The OpenClaw plugin now sends framed hook requests to the daemon, validates replies before allowing, and fails closed on unavailable or malformed verdicts.
