🏗️🔧:refuse to pass a check that read no files - #1884
Conversation
A tool handed no files does not fail. `prettier --check` with an empty argument list prints `No parser and no file path given` and exits 0. So a task whose glob stops matching -- a directory renamed, an extension changed, an exclusion widened past what it meant -- goes green for ever, having read nothing. Twenty-two of the twenty-four tasks that discover their own files were open to this. The two that were not, `verify.unit` and `verify.htmlValidForVNU`, each guard themselves and say why in a comment: a pattern matching nothing "would report success having run no tests". That reasoning was right and was never applied anywhere else, so it is a shared helper now. A project that genuinely has none of a kind should delete the task rather than leave it matching nothing. Deleting it is how a repository says so out loud, and this is what makes staying quiet impossible. Ported from OpenINF/.github#905, where it was found by claiming the opposite in a commit message and then checking. - Line 20: Update the format task’s empty-file guard to use a combined list of
JSON, JSONC, and JSON5 files, so JSON5-only repositories are not skipped. Keep
each formatter command, including the JSON5 Prettier command, conditional on its
own file list being non-empty.

combined JSON, JSONC, and JSON5 matches rather than only jsonFiles. Keep the
Biome and JSON5 verification commands independently executable after the guard,
and preserve the existing Prettier check for all applicable files.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Guard the task on JSON, JSONC, and JSON5 matches.
Line 20 checks only jsonFiles, but json5Files is discovered separately and is a valid input to the Prettier command below. If a project contains only *.json5 files, matched sets the exit code to 1 and the task skips prettier --check for those files. Use the combined file set for the empty-task guard, then add the Biome and JSON5 commands independently.

Review catch on the JSON tasks, and the same shape in verify.ts. `verify.json` and `format.json` read two lists and ran one guard over both. With `matched(jsonFiles, ...)` deciding whether either tool ran, a checkout where no plain JSON matched skipped JSON5 as well -- and skipped it by way of the guard added to stop exactly that kind of silence. Each list guards its own command now. The fix is not to widen the guard to cover both lists, which was the other way suggested. That makes a project with no plain JSON pass quietly, which is the outcome this whole change exists to refuse. Under the split, JSON5 is still checked when no JSON matched and the task still fails for the JSON that did not: both facts are reported, and neither hides the other. `verify.ts` had it too, in the other direction: `tsc --noEmit` was gated on a glob it does not read. tsc takes its file list from tsconfig.json, whose input set is wider than `**/*.ts, **/*.mts`, so gating it there would let a checkout of nothing this glob names go unchecked. Only Biome is handed the list; tsc runs either way. This is what OpenINF/.github landed in af2e821, whose message calls out the same trap; this branch had the pre-fix shape. Checked by simulating an empty JSON list: `.renovaterc.json5` is still handed to prettier, and the task still exits 1 for the JSON that matched nothing. Right about the symptom, so fixed in 6b3ab09 — though not with the proposed remedy, for a reason worth stating. The bug is real. The suggested fix trades it for a worse one. Widening the guard to So each list guards its own command instead: const scripts = [

...(matched(json5Files, '**/*.json5')
? [`prettier --check ${quote(json5Files)}`]
: []),
];Both facts get reported and neither hides the other. Simulated with an empty JSON list: One the review did not catch

Ported from OpenINF/.github, where these are part of 7504c8a and e93b403. Two globs were not describing what they meant. The YAML tasks matched pnpm-lock.yaml, so every `verify.yaml` and `format.yaml` ran prettier over a 178 KB generated file. It is written by pnpm, not by hand, and a lockfile that failed a style check is not a thing anybody would fix by editing it. Excluded, the YAML tasks read ten files rather than eleven. The spelling glob named `json` but neither `json5` nor `jsonc`, so .renovaterc.json5, biome.jsonc, .markdownlint-cli2.jsonc and .markdownlint.jsonc were never spell-checked. Not a hypothetical gap: adding the two extensions took cspell from 123 files to 127 and turned up `syle` for `style` in a comment in .markdownlint.jsonc, which is fixed here. The same comment in OpenINF/.github is spelt correctly, so this was ours alone. One thing to watch when landing this alongside #1884: that branch passes the spelling glob to `matched()` as a second, literal copy of the same string. The two hunks are far enough apart to merge without complaint, and whichever lands second leaves the literal in `matched()` naming the older extension list. It reads only in a failure message, but it should be brought back into agreement. Signed-off-by: Derek Lewis <DerekNonGeneric@inf.is> Assisted-by: Claude-Code:claude-opus-5
The follow-up this branch said it would need. #1884 landed first and brought `matched(files, ...)`, whose second argument was a second literal copy of the glob above it -- and the two were already a version apart, since this branch widened one of them to cover json5 and jsonc and the other still named the older list. It is read only in the message printed when nothing matched, so nothing was broken by it. But a string duplicated once has already shown it will drift, so it is named and referenced twice rather than written twice.
