🏗️🔧:keep the sync's write token from installed code - #1923
Conversation
The sync workflow ran `pnpm install` and later, in the same job, minted a token that can write to this repository and ran git and gh with it. Anything an install leaves behind on the runner -- a git or gh earlier on PATH via node_modules/.bin, a hook under .git/hooks -- would then run with that token in reach, despite the comment saying nothing after that point runs anybody else's code. The check and the pull request are now separate jobs. The first downloads, unpacks, installs and runs the import, holding only the read-only SDK token. The second runs on a fresh runner after it, with no install: it downloads and unpacks the same artifact again with the node-only task, and only then mints the write token and opens the pull request. The check job still exposes the app private key to the install step.
The split keeps the write token out of the install job. It does not keep the app private key out of that job.
- How the key gets there: The
checkjob referencessecrets.SDK_SYNC_APP_IDandsecrets.SDK_SYNC_APP_PRIVATE_KEYin itsread-tokenstep (lines 71-72). The runner sends every secret that a job references toRunner.Workerwhen the job starts. The secret then stays in that process's memory for the whole job. - Who can read it: On GitHub-hosted runners, the runner user has passwordless
sudo. A lifecycle script that runs duringpnpm installcan therefore dumpRunner.Workermemory. The 2025tj-actions/changed-filescompromise used this method to extract job secrets. Secret masking only affects log output, so it does not prevent this. - What the key allows: The holder can call the app API directly. It can mint an installation token with
contents: writeandpull-requests: writeonopeninf.github.io, or any other permission the app has. Thepermission-actions: readinput only narrows the token that this workflow requests. It does not narrow what the key can do. - Result: A compromised dependency can still get write access. The PR's goal is not met while this job references the key.
Fix: Do not reference app secrets in any job that installs dependencies.
- Add a
fetchjob that does not install anything. It mints the read-only SDK token, runsgh run download, and uploads the result withactions/upload-artifact. checkgets the files withactions/download-artifact, which uses this run'sGITHUB_TOKENand needs no app secret. It then unpacks, installs, and runsnps compile.importSdkApiDocs.pull-requestusesneeds: [fetch, check]and downloads the artifact thatfetchuploaded. Those bytes never passed through an install, so the reason given in the comment at lines 135-139 still holds. This job then unpacks, mints the write token, and opens the pull request.
With this layout, the app private key is only referenced in jobs that run no third-party code. In check, GITHUB_TOKEN should be limited to contents: read and actions: read.

steps:
# checkout, setup-node, download-artifact (from fetch), unpack (id: unpack),
# write-token, open the pull requestPin both artifact actions to a full commit SHA, like the other actions in this workflow. fetch uploads the artifact, so fetch can no longer drop symbolic links or files without anyone noticing. upload-artifact does not keep symlinks or file modes. The unpack task already refuses symbolic links, so this is acceptable. Confirm that the SDK artifact does not depend on file modes.
This finding follows the retrieved learnings: "isolate privileged token usage into a separate job that never executes untrusted code", and pass a shared artifact between jobs with upload-artifact/download-artifact when they preserve what is needed.

Agreed. The job that installs still names the app's private key, so a lifecycle script could read it from the runner and mint a write token itself. The fix is a fetch job that installs nothing: it holds the key, downloads the artifact and uploads it to this run. Then check reads that upload with GITHUB_TOKEN (contents: read, actions: read) and names no app secret. pull-request keeps re-downloading from the SDK, because that job installs nothing, and so it still enforces the unpack task's symlink refusal on the SDK's own bytes.
Leaving this thread open until the maintainer approves the workflow change.

@DerekNonGeneric Thanks for the clarification. Keeping the direct SDK download in pull-request preserves the unpack task’s symlink check against the SDK’s original artifact. That job does not need to consume the fetch upload.
The proposed layout addresses the private-key exposure. This finding remains open pending maintainer approval and implementation.

Learning: In `.github/workflows/sdk-api-sync.yml`, preserve the `pull-request` job's direct download from the SDK so `build/tasks/unpack-sdk-api-artifact.mts` can reject symlinks in the SDK's original artifact. Passing that artifact through `actions/upload-artifact` first does not preserve symlinks and therefore changes what this validation can detect.

Before: the SDK API sync job ran
pnpm install, which runs dependency lifecycle scripts, and addednode_modules/.bintoGITHUB_PATH. Later in the same job it minted a token that can write to this repository and rangitandghwith it. A dependency'sgitorghearlier on the PATH, or a hook it left under.git/hooks, would have run with that token in reach. In a local reproduction, a fakegitand a pre-commit hook both printed the token. After: the import check and the pull request run in separate jobs. The job that installs only ever holds the read-only SDK token. The job that mints the write token runs on a fresh runner, never installs anything, and runs only the runner's own
gitandgh, the pinned actions, and a node-only task. How: the old job up to the import check becomes
check. A newpull-requestjob (needs: check) downloads and unpacks the same artifact again withunpack-sdk-api-artifact.mts, which imports onlynode:modules. Only after that does it mint the write token and run the unchanged "Open a pull request" step. Downloading again, rather than passing files between the jobs, adds no new actions to pin, and the pull request carries the SDK's bytes rather than anything the install could have touched.nps verify.workflows,verify.yaml, prettier, cspell and the build all pass. This is a workflow change, so it can only be checked by structure and lint before it first runs.Note: this touches
.github/workflows/, and the SDK commit queue's app was refused (HTTP 403) when it tried to land a workflow change there today. This PR may need the squash button or the app'sworkflowspermission.Summary by CodeRabbit
