autoDetectWorkouts: keep a mid-session rest inside one workout - #98
A 5–10 min break in the middle of a session (e.g. tennis) split one workout into two suggestions, because spans only merged when the gap was under 5 min.
Now spans 5–15 min apart also merge when all of these hold:
the strap stayed on;
HR stayed above RHR + 15% of HRR;
the merged workout stays within the 120 min cap.
The HR and motion gates ignore the rest period. Sessions hours apart, off-wrist gaps, and pauses where HR returns to rest stay separate.
Adds auto_detect_test.dart (8 cases); all tests pass. In edge, repin and bump kAlgoVersion.
Summary by Sourcery
Bridge qualifying mid-session rests so continuous workouts produce a single accurate suggestion.
New Features:
Keep workout suggestions together across observed 5–15 minute rests when heart rate indicates continued recovery and the combined session remains within the duration limit.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent genuine workouts with mid-session breaks from being split into multiple suggestions while keeping separate sessions, off-wrist gaps, fully recovered pauses, and overly long sessions distinct.
Enhancements:
Exclude bridged rest periods from effort-based heart-rate and motion qualification while retaining the full session for reported workout metrics.
Preserve independent suggestions when bridging would exceed duration limits or overlap a saved workout.
Documentation:
Update workout detector documentation to describe the observed-rest bridging behavior and constraints.
Tests:
Add comprehensive rest-bridging coverage for valid breaks, motion and effort gating, duration limits, data gaps, recovery to rest, saved workouts, and existing short-gap merging.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Workout auto-detection can join exercise efforts separated by an elevated-heart-rate recovery pause of up to 15 minutes, as long as the combined workout stays within the duration limit.
Pauses with low heart rate, heart-rate sample gaps over 90 seconds, or overlap with a saved workout remain separate.
Brief pauses under five minutes continue to merge. Reported workout heart-rate statistics include bridged recovery periods.

The detector now keeps a workout with a 5–15 minute observed rest as one suggestion when HR remains above a scaled recovery floor and the merged span stays within 120 minutes, while effort-only gating prevents the rest from invalidating the workout and comprehensive tests cover merge and separation cases.

**Updated suggestions stay stale**
When edge deploys this detector revision without repinning it and bumping `kAlgoVersion`, the edge consumer continues serving its immutable stored workout suggestions instead of recomputing them, so users do not see the newly bridged sessions.
In edge, repin the analytics revision and bump `kAlgoVersion` so stored suggestions are recomputed.

**Bridged workouts disappear**
When a bridged candidate is near the 120-minute cap and another span follows within a gap under 5 minutes, the short-gap branch extends `cur.end` without checking `maxWorkoutMin`, so the final duration check drops the entire candidate, including efforts that would have produced separate suggestions.
Check the cap before extending a candidate and keep efforts as separate candidates when the extension would exceed it.

**Saved workout hides remaining bout**
When a saved span overlaps only one of the efforts joined by a rest bridge, the bridge expands `cur` across both efforts, then the saved-span check rejects the entire `[start, end]` candidate if a saved workout overlaps either effort. The caller therefore loses a suggestion for the non-overlapping effort, which the previously separate spans could still produce.
Preserve suggestions for non-overlapping efforts when a bridged candidate intersects a saved span, rather than discarding the entire candidate.

**Rest criteria exclude valid dips**
When a bridged pause has some HR samples below the stated threshold but its mean remains above the floor, `_restBridgeHolds` checks the mean HR inside the pause, so it bridges pauses containing samples below RHR + 0.15·HRR when the mean still clears the floor. The public description says HR stays above that threshold, misleading callers about when one suggestion is returned.
Clarify that the pause's mean HR must meet the floor, and document the observed-data and duration-cap requirements as well.

**Rest bridge path is not verified**
When span-building starts tolerating the whole 8-minute dip, `the sit-down really is past the unconditional 5-min merge` checks only a gap calculated from the fixture’s raw HR samples; it never calls `detect()`. If span-building keeps the 8-minute dip in one span, the tennis test still returns one workout without exercising rest bridging, and these assertions still pass.
Verify that span-building actually closes the first span before the rest, or otherwise make the test distinguish a bridged gap from a dip kept in one span.
</issue_to_address>
A sit-down mid-session split one workout into two suggestions. Tennis for
an hour with an 8-min break after 20 min: HR falls below the gate, the
span closes after maxDipS (90 s), and the two halves land ~7.5 min apart,
past the only merge rule (gap strictly < mergeGapS = 5 min).
Spans 5-15 min apart (restBridgeMaxS) are now joined when the pause was
observed (no data hole > maxGapS, same rule as span building) and HR
stayed at or above RHR + 0.15*HRR on average (restBridgeHrrFraction), and
the merged window stays within maxWorkoutMin. The mean-HR and motion gates
judge only the effort minutes outside bridged rests, so bridging never
turns two valid suggestions into none; reported avg/peak still cover the
whole window. Gaps < 5 min merge unconditionally, as before. Sessions
hours apart, an off-wrist break, or a pause where HR is back at rest stay
separate.
Adds test/onehz/auto_detect_test.dart (the detector had no tests).
…estion
a short gap after a bridged rest grew the window past the 120 min cap with
no check, and the cap then dropped the whole thing. the short-gap merge now
runs first and bridging works on its output, so the cap check sees the full
joined window. a bridge is also refused when a saved workout overlaps it,
since the saved-span check would otherwise drop the effort that was never
saved along with the one that was.
the tennis guard test now runs the detector to show the halves really do
come out of span building as two, and the docs say the rest is judged on
its mean hr.

Cover the bridged-rest exclusion from motion qualification.
_Series.detect passes no motion argument, so the motion block in auto_detect.dart does not run for this suite. The motion mean at auto_detect.dart:382 skips samples inside a bridged rest. No test in this change supplies motion across a bridged rest, so a regression that restores rest samples to the motion mean would not fail any test.
That regression can reject a valid bridged workout. For example, 8 minutes of rest at motion 0.01 followed by 50 minutes of effort at 0.16 averages about 0.139 over the whole window, below motionConfirmMean (0.15). The onset bypass then applies only when the onset rise is at least onsetRiseBpm (25). The current bridged cases start after a pre-window near 70 bpm, so the bypass would accept them. The new case needs a smaller onset rise.
Add a case that supplies motion with:
effort motion above 0.15,
rest motion low enough that the whole-window mean falls below 0.15,
an onset rise below onsetRiseBpm, so the bypass cannot mask the rejection.

Pin the avgBpm assertions to the whole-window mean.
Lines 78-79 accept any integer from 120 to 139. The comment above them says the reported average covers the whole session, including the sit-down. The detector computes that average as the rounded mean of every sample in the window (auto_detect.dart:406-412). For this series, that mean is about 134. A change that counts only about the first 100 of the 480 sit-down samples yields about 139 and still passes. Compare avgBpm with the rounded mean of the window's samples instead.

Update the avgBpm assertions in the test around the reported session window to

Add a test for a pause with a data hole longer than maxGapS.
No test has samples on both sides of a data hole longer than maxGapS. The check at lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart:458 that refuses such a pause is therefore not exercised. Removing it would leave the suite passing while the detector bridges a pause that contains an unobserved stretch. The case below has a 3-minute hole, and its 100 bpm mean is above the bridge floor, so the hole check is what keeps the result at two workouts.

the average check took anything between the gate and play, and no test
supplied motion through a sit-down, so counting the rest in the motion mean
would have gone unnoticed.
@coderabbitai both follow-ups are added: the tennis test now checks avgBpm against the rounded mean of every sample in the window, and a new case runs motion through a still sit-down (play at 0.16, rest at 0.01, a 22 bpm run-up so the onset bypass can't step in) and expects the bridged match back. counting the rest in the motion mean fails it.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@abdulsaheel Thanks. The tests you describe cover both follow-ups:
The avgBpm assertion checks that reported averages include every sample in the bridged rest.
The still-rest case checks that motion qualification excludes the bridged rest. The 22 bpm run-up prevents the onset exception from masking a regression.
I have not independently run the tests.

Learning: Within repository "OpenStrap/analytics", only for files matching one of ["lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart"]: When reviewing optional motion handling in lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart, preserve HR-only detection when a candidate window contains no motion samples, including when a supplied motion series has a hole. Check that missing motion remains null and supplies no motion features to the classifier; do not require the onset exception solely because motion is missing. When measured mean motion is below motionConfirmMean, preserve the existing onset exception requirement. This contract applies to user-confirmed workout suggestions, not automatically logged workouts.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
@coderabbitai also added the third one: a sit-down with samples on both sides of a 2-min hole, HR above the bridge floor throughout, stays two workouts. dropping the in-pause gap check fails it.

@abdulsaheel Thanks. The case you describe covers the internal data-gap check: samples on both sides and elevated HR must not permit bridging across a 2-minute hole. Removing the check makes the test fail, which isolates that regression.

Add a regression test for the effort-only HR gate on a bridged match.
No test in the file distinguishes the effort-only window mean used by the gate at lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart:372-373 from the full-window mean. The assertion at line 84 checks only the reported avgBpm, which uses the full window. The tennis and motion cases both use 140 bpm efforts, which keep either mean above the gate of 119, so either implementation passes every listed test.
Add a case where 120 bpm efforts bracket an 8-minute recovery to 90 bpm. The rest averages about 94 bpm, which clears the bridge floor of 80. The full-window mean is about 116 bpm, below the gate. The effort-only mean is 120 bpm, above it. The detector should return one workout. A full-window gate rejects the merged window, so the hasLength(1) assertion fails.

Add a regression case in the bridged-match tests that brackets an 8-minute
recovery at 90 bpm with 120 bpm efforts, asserting the detector returns one
workout with the effort-period start and end. This must pass when the
effort-only mean clears the gate even though the full-window mean is below it;
keep the existing `w.single.avgBpm` assertion focused on the reported
full-window average.
The sit-down test passes whether or not the motion gate runs for bridged matches. Its effort-minute motion is 0.16, which clears motionConfirmMean. The unbridged tests at auto_detect_test.dart:97 and :140 cover only windows without a rest bridge. A change that skips the motion gate only for bridged matches would not fail the suite. The added case uses motion 0.01 in the effort minutes. The onset exception does not apply because the rise is 22 bpm, below onsetRiseBpm, so the match should be rejected and the result should be empty.

suite that creates a bridged match with motion at 0.01 throughout the effort
minutes and a heart-rate rise below the onset exception threshold. Assert that
`s.detect(motion: motion)` returns an empty result.
Add a rest-bridge test with a sample hole inside maxGapS.
Add a rest-bridge test with a sample hole inside maxGapS.
The rest-bridge tests contain only two sample holes, and both are longer than maxGapS (90 s): an 8-minute hole and a 2-minute hole. The one-workout tennis case has no hole. No test expects one workout across a rest that contains a short hole. An implementation that rejects every missing sample inside a rest would still pass these tests, because the two hole tests expect two workouts. Add a case with a 1-minute hole inside an otherwise eligible rest, and expect one workout.

Add a rest-bridge test alongside the existing rest-bridge cases that includes a
one-minute missing-sample hole within maxGapS, with heart rate above the bridge
floor on both sides, and assert that s.detect() returns one workout.

@coderabbitai added the effort-only gate case: 120 bpm play around an 8-min recovery to 90 comes back as one workout over the play. gating on the full-window mean fails it.

@abdulsaheel Thanks. The case you describe checks that the HR gate uses the effort-only mean and excludes the bridged recovery. The 120 bpm efforts remain one workout across the 8-minute recovery at 90 bpm. Your reported failure with full-window gating isolates that regression.
I have not independently inspected or run the test.

Learning: Within repository "OpenStrap/analytics", only for files matching one of ["lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart"]: When reviewing rest bridging in lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart, verify that the workout HR gate uses the effort-only mean, excluding bridged rest samples rather than using the full-window mean. Preserve regression coverage in which 120 bpm efforts separated by an eligible 8-minute recovery at 90 bpm produce one workout, while using the full-window mean for the gate makes the test fail.

@coderabbitai added the low-motion case too: a bridged match at 0.01 g/s throughout with a 22 bpm run-up is rejected. skipping the motion check for bridged windows fails it.

@abdulsaheel Thanks. The case you describe checks that rest bridging does not bypass motion confirmation. Motion stays at 0.01 g/s, and the 22 bpm run-up prevents the onset exception from masking the check. Your reported failure when skipping motion confirmation isolates that regression.
I have not independently inspected or run the test.

A 5–10 min break in the middle of a session (e.g. tennis) split one workout into two suggestions, because spans only merged when the gap was under 5 min.
Now spans 5–15 min apart also merge when all of these hold:
The HR and motion gates ignore the rest period. Sessions hours apart, off-wrist gaps, and pauses where HR returns to rest stay separate.
