Add 40 selective languages and reduce HTML rendering overhead - #38
Adds 40 independently importable language definitions, bringing the registry to 79 including plaintext. Direct subpaths and named barrel imports tree shake unused languages, with no runtime dependencies. Existing names and aliases remain compatible, including cmd mapping to shell. The additions provide documented lexical coverage, with attributed Highlight.js vocabulary lists.
Plain HTML highlighting now serializes tokens directly and skips unnecessary escaping replacements. Matched-output local measurements show 20% less time for the docs corpus in Node and 27% less in Bun, for 73 additional gzip bytes in core. TSX with core is 4,389 bytes gzip; the optional full registry is 27,980 bytes.
Includes a minor Changeset for @tanstack/highlight and reproducible benchmark reports.
Validation: pnpm install --frozen-lockfile, pnpm run changeset:status, and pnpm run verify passed, including 307 tests, 166 import isolation checks, packed runtime checks, 66 size profiles, and 20 benchmark profiles.
The package adds 40 language definitions using a shared lexical scanner and registers them in its language exports. The changes also update highlighting output, expand language and package tests, revise size budgets, and add benchmark reports and comparisons.
Changes: Language Expansion and Rendering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared scanner and language definitions src/internal/simple-language.ts, src/languages/*
A shared helper builds tokenizers from comment, string, word, and custom patterns. Forty language definitions configure the helper with language-specific syntax and aliases.
Language registration and coverage src/index.ts, src/languages/index.ts, test/additional-languages.test.ts, test/fixtures.ts, test/real-doc-fixtures.test.ts, scripts/test-package.mjs, scripts/test-runtime.mjs, docs/language-support.md, docs/reference/*, docs/test-strategy.md, skills/configure-selective-highlighting/references/languages.md, README.md, reports/language-expansion/README.md, .changeset/selective-languages-and-rendering.md, NOTICE.md, package.json
The language definitions are added to the registry and exports. Tests and package checks cover language fixtures, aliases, isolated registration, and package notices. Reference material lists the expanded languages and their aliases.
HTML rendering and performance measurements src/core.ts, test/additional-languages.test.ts, scripts/bench.mjs, scripts/compare-builds.mjs, scripts/measure-size.mjs, reports/language-expansion/*, README.md, docs/guides/performance.md, docs/installation.md
When line numbers are disabled and decorations are absent, highlighting builds escaped HTML directly from tokens. Benchmark scripts, measurement reports, size budgets, and documentation cover the added language fixtures and rendering comparisons.
Pierre Comparison Materials
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Comparison scripts and recorded results scripts/compare-pierre.mjs, scripts/probe-pierre.mjs, reports/pierre/*
Scripts compare timing, token categories, source-text preservation, language support, and bundle sizes. Reports record benchmark methods, results, and diagnostic probes.
The comparison report should distinguish its earlier measurements from the expanded language set, and several new languages can produce incorrect highlighting for ordinary syntax. Address those issues before merging unless the limitations are explicitly accepted.

Review comments at @reports/pierre/README.md:
- Line 75: Separate the pre-change language counts and bundle-size measurements
in the README report from this PR’s results: rerun the comparison against the
updated registry and report its measurements, or clearly label the existing
figures as a pre-change baseline.
- Line 59: Update the TanStack HTML-path description to reflect that, when line
numbers and decorations are absent, src/core.ts serializes tokens directly
without building render nodes. Revise the proposed optimization so it targets
work the plain-HTML path still performs, and retain the distinction that the
existing API also promises tokens.
Review comments at @scripts/probe-pierre.mjs:
- Line 49: Update the fixture-loading flow in `probe-pierre.mjs` to reject Git
LFS pointer content using the same pointer check as `compare-pierre.mjs` before
adding a fixture to `docs`, so pointer text is not counted as a preservation
test case.
Review comments at @src/internal/simple-language.ts:
- Line 77: Update the default numeric regex in the `patterns.push` logic to
consume supported numeric type suffixes, including letter suffixes and
underscore-prefixed suffixes such as `_dp`, so suffixed literals are highlighted
in full rather than as a prefix. Preserve the existing `options.numbers`
override behavior.
Review comments at @src/languages/graphql.ts:
- Line 11: Remove the insensitive setting from the GraphQL language definition
so keyword matching remains case-sensitive and does not highlight type names
such as Query as keywords; leave the other language settings unchanged.
Review comments at @src/languages/less.ts:
- Line 10: Update the selector and property patterns in the Less `beforeWords`
definition to use the same lookahead fix as the corresponding patterns in
`scss.ts`, so hex colors are not highlighted as selectors and pseudo-class
element names are not highlighted as properties.
Review comments at @src/languages/scss.ts:
- Line 10: Update the selector and property patterns in beforeWords to respect
SCSS block context: only match selectors when a following opening brace occurs
before a statement boundary, and reject property matches when an opening brace
occurs after the colon before a semicolon or closing brace.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Add numeric suffix support to the default numbers regex.
The pattern ends with (?!\w). A literal with a type suffix therefore loses its highlight, or highlights only a prefix. Examples:
1.0f highlights only 1.
10UL, 5u, 10L and 1.0_dp are not highlighted.
C, GLSL, Objective-C, Scala, Groovy, D, F#, R and Fortran all use these suffixes, and none of them overrides numbers. The existing cpp definition accepts [uUlLfFzZ]+, so the new C-family definitions behave differently from it.

Restrict the selector and property patterns to their block context.
This has the same cause as in scss.ts.
The selector regex [.#][A-Za-z_][\w-]* matches hex colors. color: #fff; highlights #fff as a selector.
The property regex [\w-]+(?=\s*:(?!:)) matches element names that carry a pseudo-class. In a:hover {, the name a is highlighted as a property.
Apply the same lookahead fix as in scss.ts.
