…oo-Code-Org#1939) Workspace-scope zoo-code.allowedCommands/deniedCommands settings were never enforced, and saving the auto-approve dialog flattened the merged dialog list into user-global settings, leaking project entries into every workspace. Activation additionally seeded global state from the effective config, permanently copying workspace overrides into global settings. - Read/enforcement: new src/core/auto-approval/commandScope.ts unions the extension global-state layer with the workspace layer from inspect().workspaceFolderValue ?? workspaceValue; ClineProvider.getState() and getStateToPostToWebview() share the same merged value so enforcement and display cannot drift (old mergeCommandLists deleted). - Write/scope-leak: splitCommandListScopes() + resolveWorkspaceWriteTarget() keep workspace entries in their folder/workspace scope, route new entries to Global, remove deleted entries from the owning scope, and persist only the global layer to extension global state. - Activation seed leak: seedAllowedCommands.ts reads inspect().globalValue only, so workspace overrides are no longer folded into (and copied permanently to) global state at activation. - Dead code: remove vestigial allowedCommands/deniedCommands webview message handlers (zero senders), their WebviewMessage union members, and the orphaned commands payload. Explanation
Issue
#1939requires workspace command entries to remain visible and preserved when the settings dialog saves.ClineProvider.getState()usesreadCommandListScopes(...).merged, butgetStateToPostToWebview()still assignsallowedCommandsanddeniedCommandsfrom extension global state only. A workspace-only entry is absent from the dialog state. An unchanged dialog save can therefore remove that entry from its workspace scope.Resolution
Use
readCommandListScopes("allowedCommands", allowedCommands).mergedand the equivalent denied-command value ingetStateToPostToWebview(). Keep a regression test that verifies a workspace-only entry appears in webview state and survives an unchanged dialog save.
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
The prior security finding remains valid. In changed
ClineProvider.getState()(src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2962-2966),readCommandListScopes()unions workspace and global command lists. The unchanged matcher (src/core/auto-approval/commands.ts:407-423) lets the longer allow prefix win. Therefore, with global statedeniedCommands: ["rm"], workspaceallowedCommands: ["rm -rf"], andalwaysAllowExecuteenabled,rm -rf /reaches the approval boundary and is auto-approved. The changed scope tests do not cover this conflict.Resolution
Make global deny entries authoritative at the approval boundary. Reject or ignore a workspace allow when the command matches a global deny, or run a separate global-deny check before longest-prefix resolution. Add regression tests for global
deniedCommands: ["rm"]with workspaceallowedCommands: ["rm -rf"], and globaldeniedCommands: ["*"]with workspaceallowedCommands: ["rm"]; neither command may auto-approve.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
The changed command-list save path still has an unhandled partial-persistence failure. In
webviewMessageHandler.ts:821-831, the workspace and global configuration writes complete beforewebviewMessageHandler.ts:949awaitscontextProxy.setValue(). ForallowedCommandsanddeniedCommands,ContextProxy.setValue()callsupdateGlobalState(), which updatesstateCachebefore awaitingglobalState.update()(ContextProxy.ts:363-370, 538-542). IfglobalState.update()rejects after both configuration writes succeed, no catch or rollback restores either configuration layer or the extension-state cache. For example, savingdeniedCommandswith an existing workspace entry can leave the new global/workspace settings on disk while the old extension global-state list remains persisted; after restart, new entries disappear or removed entries return. The added tests cover configuration-write and workspace-restore failures, but no extension-state-write failure.Resolution
Make command-list persistence transactional across configuration and extension state. Capture the prior workspace configuration value, prior global configuration value, prior extension global-state value, and prior cache value. If
contextProxy.setValue()fails after configuration writes, restore both configuration layers and restore the extension-state cache and persisted value, or report an explicit unrecoverable partial failure that identifies the changed layers and prevents the handler from reporting success. Add a test that rejects the extension-state write after successful configuration writes and verifies compensation or explicit partial-failure reporting.

… review (Zoo-Code-Org#1939) - Rewind the workspace-layer command-list write when the global-layer write fails: the raw previous value is captured before saving, the failed key skips its extension global-state update while the other keys still save, and a failed rewind is reported alongside the original error. - Read and write the command lists through one configuration object scoped to the first workspace folder, so workspace-folder targets are legal and resolve against the right folder's settings (the VS Code API rejects folder-targeted updates on an unscoped configuration). - Narrow the try/catch around configuration lookups so a failed lookup stays distinct from an absent value; behavior is unchanged, the guarded failure mode is now testable. - Add regression tests for the compensation path, the scoped reads and writes, and the seed guard; tighten comments.

…Code-Org#1939) Saving an allowed/denied command list now inspects the configuration once per key and derives the workspace layer, the rollback value and the write target from that one snapshot, instead of three reads that could disagree. When the inspection is unavailable the key is skipped with a visible error and nothing is written for it, which also removes a path where a workspace-only entry could be re-copied into user settings; the other keys of the same save still persist. Regression tests cover the single-read invariant and both abort cases.
…g#1939) Fresh installs keep the built-in git command defaults again: with no user, workspace, or folder value set, the declared default list is seeded into global state. This line adds the workspace layer to the enforced list, and zoo-code.allowedCommands has no scope or untrustedWorkspaces restriction in package.json. Can a cloned repo's .vscode/settings.json now grant auto-approved commands once the user trusts it? Would machine-overridable scope, or workspace entries for deniedCommands only, fit the goal of #1939?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Answering the factual part first: yes, a workspace .vscode/settings.json can carry allow entries, and the longest-prefix match can let a workspace entry outrank a global deny today. So your concern is valid — as implemented, this PR makes workspace-granted auto-approval possible in a way that can reasonably be considered unsafe, and I don't want it to stay that way. My plan is not to remove workspace entries but to change the model with the following two rules, which I intend to implement once we agree on the direction:
1. The global layer outranks the workspace layer. The user's own lists are evaluated first and decide wherever they have a matching entry, in both directions. A global deny of git then blocks git commands in every project no matter what a repository's allow list grants — the global deny list finally becomes a genuine personal veto. Symmetrically, a team's deny cannot outrank a member's global allow either. The authority over Zoo is the person running it; a project file fills gaps in the user's policy, never outranks it.
2. A user-level setting — not settable by workspace files, default off — gates the entire workspace layer. Until the user switches it on, a project's settings.json cannot influence command policy at all. This goes beyond your "workspace entries for deniedCommands only" suggestion: even repo-carried denies are a policy change by a potentially untrusted source, so nothing from the workspace applies by default, and curated project lists materialize only for members who opted in on their machine. For existing users the feature simply does not exist until they enable it.
Why project-scoped lists at all: an allow list is project knowledge — test runners, build commands — and today it accumulates in one global list that grows into the union of every project you have opened. The intended steady state is a curated project list under blanket auto-deny: everything outside the list is denied, so the list is the project's capability boundary. Manually approving commands that match neither list does not scale — models invent new command strings constantly. The last piece is exact-match entries (#1940): a prefix entry like npm run grants arbitrary execution today, so exact entries are what make a curated list safe to rely on unattended.
Neither rule is part of this PR yet — I'd like to settle the model here before implementing it. I'm very happy to hear your thoughts, especially if you spot a flaw in the model or if you have additional wishes.

Can we tie into the vscode workspace trust api, instead of introducing something new?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Currently, Zoo is not loaded at all if a workspace is not trusted. I took a brief look at the api, for Zoo to be able to function in untrusted environments, we would need to define a set of functions that are safe even in untrusted workspaces. While certainly interesting, this would be a better fit in a separate pr altogether, and it also would not solve the issue here, as this is about the behaviour in an already trusted workspace.
I can think of several ways forward:
- we integrate the pr as-is. That would mean that global and workspace coped lists get merged, longest prefix wins (this is also the current global behaviour if allow/deny lists are in conflict). This means a workspace scoped specific allow could override a global deny (for example workspace "git status" could override globally denied "git". Imho easy to understand, might have surprising results when the allowlists of a workspace are not reviewed by the user before they are first used, or if the user is not aware that workspace-scoped command lists exist.
- Implement the above mentioned change, that the global allow/deny lists always outrank a workspace list. This allows the user to implement a general veto for certain commands, for example putting "git" on the global deny list would disable all git commands, no matter what a workspace list would define. This would be a good use for the deny list, as I suspect that the blanket auto-deny will make all other uses of any deny list obsolete anyway. The drawback to that solution is that while it provides more flexibility than 1) it is probably less intuitive. Still, this would be my preferred solution now.
- No matter if 1) or 2) is chosen, implementing workspace scoped command lists might surprise users that are not aware of the feature. This led to my suggestion to add a setting that is disabled per default, and that needs to be enabled to activate the workspace scoped command lists. This setting would be global, and once activated would enable workspace soped lists for all workspaces, not per-workspace. That way, a user would have to be aware of the feature to use it, reducing surprises. Downside is that it adds another setting.
What do you think? Or do you have something completely different in mind?

2 makes sense to me, if the workspace is untrusted, but if the workspace is trusted then it's list should take priority.

This write replaces the user-scope value with globalWrite, but enforcement and display no longer read inspect().globalValue. If a user hand-edited entries in their user settings.json, do they disappear on the next save? Should globalValue join the global layer, or is the seed the only intended source?

The three merge tests here cover deniedCommands, and this is the only allowedCommands assertion ([]). If getState() returned the raw stateValues.allowedCommands, would any test fail? Can we add a case with a workspace-only allow entry for both getState() and getStateToPostToWebview()?
…nce (Zoo-Code-Org#1939) A user-level command-list entry now decides any command it matches: an entry from a workspace's .vscode/settings.json applies only where no user-level entry (allow or deny) matches, in both directions. The whole workspace layer sits behind a new setting, zoo-code.workspaceCommandListsEnabled, default off. It is declared with "scope": "application" in the extension manifest, so only user settings resolve it and a repository file cannot enable it; the settings save path also refuses a gate value supplied by the webview. Entries hidden while the gate is off are hidden from the approval dialog as well, and saving from the dialog preserves the workspace entries it does not show. The setting's description resolves from the nls bundles, translated for all 17 locales. Covers allow-side state propagation in tests. Addresses reviewer feedback on Zoo-Code-Org#2056.

Description
Workspace-scope
zoo-code.allowedCommands/zoo-code.deniedCommandsentries were never enforced, and saving the auto-approve settings dialog copied project-scoped entries into user-global settings. Three leak paths caused this; each gets a targeted fix:ClineProvider.getState()read only extension global state, so a workspace-only allow-list had no effect on command auto-approval. Newsrc/core/auto-approval/commandScope.tsprovidesreadCommandListScopes(), which unions the global-state layer with the workspace layer frominspect().workspaceFolderValue ?? workspaceValue.getState()andgetStateToPostToWebview()now share this merged value, so enforcement (Task.ask→getCommandDecisionDetailed) and the settings display show the same list and cannot drift. The oldmergeCommandListshelper is deleted.updateSettingsinwebviewMessageHandler.tsnow usessplitCommandListScopes()andresolveWorkspaceWriteTarget(): existing workspace entries stay in their folder/workspace scope, new entries route to Global, deleted entries are removed from the scope that owned them, and only the global layer is persisted to extension global state.src/utils/seedAllowedCommands.tsreadsinspect().globalValueonly;extension.tscalls it.The PR also removes vestigial
