This PR routes the remaining write tools - apply_diff, write_to_file, edit, edit_file, search_replace - through the same guard, so after this unit no tool path can clobber a file the model never read: an unearned write fails with the re-read remediation instead of overwriting. A write outside every workspace root is no longer an outright rejection: the tool layer classifies against all workspace folders, asks the user, and forwards the approval to the guard, which re-checks containment against the approved roots before publishing.

It is the seventh of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

Related GitHub Issue

Tracking: issue 2022 (this unit's tracking issue; deliberately not a closing reference - the maintainer closes it when the series lands).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking), #1375 (epic).

Description

What this PR changes:

  1. apply_diff, write_to_file, edit, edit_file and search_replace all save through DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly() / guardedWrite() with an explicit write kind, so a targeted edit is never treated as a full-file replacement.
  2. The tools' own reads (the diff hunk read, the patch hunk read) bracket the read with a bigint fs.stat pair and observe the file only when both tokens match, so the publish is authorized by the exact bytes the tool computed its hunks from; a stat failure leaves the file unobserved and never fails the read.
  3. Approved outside-workspace writes are bound to the canonical identity captured BEFORE the approval was asked (approvedCanonicalTarget); the guard only compares and refuses when the capture is missing.
  4. Review-round fixes on this unit: an unresolvable workspace root no longer falls back to the lexical-only containment decision, a path that runs through a dangling symlink ancestor is refused instead of re-joined lexically, and the stat-failure branches are covered by tool-level tests.

Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context. This unit's own delta is 539 a+d / 54 changed executable lines.

Review focus: the tool classes named above, src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts (approval binding), and the specs named in the Test Procedure.

Test Procedure

From the repository root, with dependencies installed:

pnpm --dir src test -- core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/applyPatchTool.partial.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/applyDiffTool.guardedWrite.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/writeToFileTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/editTool.spec.ts core/tools/__tests__/searchAndReplaceTool.spec.ts

Expected: 138 passed, 5 skipped. Then pnpm --dir src test -- integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts - 166 passed, 4 skipped.
Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Scope is one gate scope and matches the unit.
  • No .changeset or CHANGELOG changes (AGENTS.md).
  • src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged - no suppression count increased.
  • New code lints clean (--max-warnings=0) rather than relying on suppressions.
  • Tests added at the lowest layer that would have caught each finding.
  • Visual Snapshot item considered: not applicable (no rendered surface).

Visual Snapshots

Not applicable - no rendered surface; the approval prompt is the existing one.

Videos (interaction / animation only)

Not applicable.

Documentation Updates

No user-facing documentation change: the guard is internal behaviour of the write tools, and the model-facing remediation text already existed in earlier units. No .changeset and no CHANGELOG edit (AGENTS.md).

Additional Notes

Verification at this head

Verification at this head (7f90fc2)

  • Unit specs: applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts 27 passed (27); DiffViewProvider.spec.ts 158 passed (158); safeWriteText.spec.ts 68 passed (68) - also 68 passed (68) in a worker whose process.platform reports linux; safeWriteJson.test.ts 27 passed / 4 skipped; safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts 7 passed (7).
  • Whole src lane measured at 52628eb86: 12859 passed | 45 failed | 41 skipped (the follow-up commit adds one passing case to that total). The same two files fail on the pre-change baseline run of this same worktree - __tests__/dist_assets.spec.ts (40, needs the bundle the local lane skips) and services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts (5, symlink cases on Windows) - so nothing that passed before fails now. Honesty note: local vitest lanes skip the pretest bundling step, so bundle-dependent specs are CI-only.
  • ESLint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 clean on all seven files; src/eslint-suppressions.json left byte-identical to the merge commit, because the prune only reformatted it and it was restored from the index. Against the merge base the total is 3301 -> 3299: one reduction (core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts), and none of the files touched this round carries an entry.
  • pnpm check-types (root tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit plus 11 turbo tasks) exit 0 on a cold cache: 11 cache miss, 0 cached. The pre-push hook re-ran it before this head was pushed.
  • Junction pre-flight for split-1833/u7: 262 reparse points under the node_modules roots - 225 pnpm-store links into this worktree, 37 workspace links, 0 links pointing into the main checkout; packages/types/dist and the turbo bin present.
  • CI at 7f90fc299, read from the job log (run 41970071166, job 127056022960): the gate derives BASE_SHA as HEAD_SHA^1 of the PR merge commit and fails with Mutation gate failed: extension has 1468 changed executable lines (limit 500) - the same chain budget-cap failure as at the previous head, which reported 1402, so chain paperwork rather than a new defect. The gate's own logic subtests passed in that run and Stryker never started, so there is no reports/mutation/ artifact and no directive was added. compile, e2e-mock, extension-host-visual, webview-visual and both platform-unit-test lanes were still running when this line was written; CodeRabbit's own check is neutral (advisory).

Updated this round

  • Registered the two open walkthrough rows at this head (no code change this round; the carried copies are unchanged):
  • Next refresh round: a content-union pass over the carried copies (this unit's approval flow + U8's cancellation ordering and landed reconciliation + U5's pinning) is scheduled after the current re-review wave, so the guard is not shipped half-merged under review pressure.

Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)

Per AGENTS.md the two Stryker suppression comments in the guarded save
path were removed instead of kept; their equivalence claims:

  • writeKind default StringLiteral ("update" -> ""): an empty kind
dispatches exactly like "update" inside guardedWrite - only "edit"
and "create" branch distinctly - and the default-parameter line is
not part of this unit's changed-line selector, so the mutant is
    equivalent / out of scope.
  • saveTask operand of the adoption-probe guard (LogicalOperator):
GuardRejectedError is only thrown by guardedWrite, which is reached
only after the !saveTask check above has already thrown. Whenever
the operand is evaluated saveTask is provably non-null, so dropping
the operand cannot change which branch is taken.

mutation-diff remains advisory for stacked units; maintainers decide any
narrow gate-config exclusion.

Re-review round (41c0295)

  • Preview-observation withdrawal on every exit path (Major): open()
records the token its preview wrote; reset() (reached by every tool catch
and by revertChanges via finalizeSession) forgets the entry while it
still holds that token and the preview's incomplete flag - publishes and
model reads survive. Trigger-sequence test + two survival tests; three
negative controls, each exactly one red.
  • Exact guard verdict in the lock-cleanup test (^Stale version -- the file changed) + deduplicated repeated assertion.

Ownership-based withdrawal port (14f8634)

The sibling unit's follow-up thread found the content-based withdrawal
could delete a model partial read recorded while the diff was open
(same token, same incomplete flag). The copy this unit owns carried the
identical flaw and is fixed identically: open() keeps the exact entry
object its observe() wrote; reset() forgets only while the registry
still stores that object. Regression test ported; NCs each exactly one
red. 153/153 green.

Open document reconciled after the guarded publish (f5fddf6)

The Persistence Integrity row: saveDirectly() commits through
guardedWrite(), which writes the bytes to disk directly, and the diff
removed the awaited document.save() that used to follow the publish -
leaving an already-open target document holding its pre-publish buffer.
A dirty buffer there is a live hazard: VS Code's ordinary save path
would republish those stale bytes over what the guard committed.
saveDirectly now reconciles the open document before returning -
reverting reloads the published bytes and clears the dirty flag - so no
open buffer is left whose text differs from the publish; reverting a
document that already matches the disk is a no-op, and the memory-only
path still never saves the buffer over the publish. Regression test: an
already-open dirty target document is reverted (not saved) by the time
saveDirectly resolves; negative control: removing the reconcile
reddens exactly that test. 154/154 green (240/240 across the guarded
write and tool suites) at this head.

Fail-safe reconcile (c198c2e)

The 04:29Z Persistence Integrity row implemented in full: saveDirectly() requires successful reconciliation after the guarded publish. If revertDocument() returns false or throws, the tab is closed and the document reopened from disk; if the reopened buffer is still dirty the write fails instead of reporting success, and the diagnostics/open path does not run while the target is dirty. Test: revert command rejects and buffer stays dirty -> saveDirectly() rejects, tab closed and reopened from disk (a later save reads the published bytes), stale buffer's own save never runs. Two negative controls (bare revert; tolerate dirty reopen) each redden exactly that test. 155/155 green.

The Security Boundaries TOCTOU row remains the registered check-then-resolve family (lands once at the publish-primitive owner; precedent record 6106959976, issue #1408).

Staging-directory drift guard fix (64dc74c)

platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest) was red at 40ac71f on exactly one case: core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts > 'finalizePartialToolAsk still updates the webview when a later save stage fails' (expected "updateClineMessage" to be called with arguments, Number of calls: 0). Measured with a probe on every realpath call in that window that printed the path it received and its outcome, plus fs.statSync of the same path at the same instant through the never-mocked fs: not one realpath returned ENOENT for the directory - the guard's first walk and both lock-key canonicalizations resolved it, four times, to inode 22517998136858990, and the only ENOENTs were on ui_messages.json itself, the target file that genuinely is not there. The guard's own await fs.stat(approvedCanonical) reported ENOENT for a directory the unmocked fs reported as that same inode, because Task.spec.ts:144 mocks fs/promises with stat: vi.fn().mockRejectedValue({ code: "ENOENT" }) for every path, and it rejected before the second walk, so the drift comparison never happened. The guard was failing on a question it invented, and the only reason our own lane never caught it is that the suite driving this write path mocks stat to fail for every path.

The guard now acts on a single signal: the re-resolution of the approved directory succeeds and lands on a different directory. A probe that cannot answer is not an answer - ENOENT because a component is mid-replacement or because the caller's fs reports the path as missing, EACCES, EPERM, ELOOP - so the write proceeds; the existence probe is gone, and a directory that really is deleted now fails at the staging write itself, still fail-closed with nothing created outside the directory the write was approved for. Confinement keeps the opposite rule on purpose: there the guard has to prove containment, and a probe that cannot answer cannot prove anything. Controls: reverting the fix reddens exactly the two new cannot-answer cases - one of them a unit-scale twin of the CI failure that also asserts the fixed path makes zero fs.stat calls - and reddens the CI case in Task.spec.ts and only it (1 failed | 198 passed); restoring it is green (5 files, 306 passed | 4 skipped) and byte-identical by SHA256. Cross-checked against a scratch merge of this branch's head with upstream/main 6bbc7a0: the CI case is red there without this commit and green with it.

Known property, deliberately not fixed in this PR: if the approved directory is replaced before the guard's first reading, both readings agree and no layer rejects the write - measured byte-for-byte identical before and after this change (the payload publishes at wherever the approved pathname now points, with no staged file left in either spelling and only the advisory lock directory travelling with the renamed directory). The consequence is that the file can be published into a directory the writer's advisory lock does not name. Closing that means safeWriteText binding the publish destination to the directory its own advisory lock names, which is a design change in the publish path that #1916's guardedWrite layer builds on, so it is registered as a follow-up unit rather than folded into a green-lane fix. It is recorded by safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts > 'follows the approved pathname when the directory is replaced before the guard reads it', which asserts readings === 3 so a change in the canonicalization order fails loudly.

Review round r112 fixes (52628eb)

Head 52628eb86. The merge base is now main at e943530c8 (merged in 002b34fa4), so the GitHub diff at this head is 33 files / 12474 insertions / 349 deletions against that base. This unit's own delta is 539 a+d / 54 changed executable lines; the mutation gate charges the whole branch delta against main (it derives BASE_SHA as HEAD_SHA^1 of the PR merge commit), so the chain copies this branch carries sit inside its number, and refreshing onto main did not shrink it.

Five live threads, each fixed and answered in-thread with its control numbers:

  1. src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts:116 (Major, rt4475729779): execute records the exact registry entry behind every observation it creates and forgets it only while the registry still holds that entry; every publish site drops its recorded entry first, so a published file is never withdrawn. Reverted to blob a36944e59b6b: 4 failed | 22 passed; at this head 26 passed (26).
  2. src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts:765 (Minor, rt4475729791): 765, 962 and 989 now close only this provider diff view via closeOwnDiffView(absolutePath). closeAllDiffViews() stays as the path-unknown fallback inside reset() (1703) and a test pins the fallback itself. Reverted to blob 8afc716b0946: 8 failed | 150 passed; at this head 158 passed (158).
  3. src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:358 (Minor, rt4475668838): dirPath is created with the plain recursive fs.mkdir before _stagingDir(dirPath), so the private 0o700 applies to the staging directory alone and the two writers agree (safeWriteJson.ts:219 already did this). Reverted to blob cb24e0e3172c: 1 failed | 67 passed on the creation-order assertion; at this head 68 passed (68). Windows cannot expose the mode difference itself (measured 666 / 666 in both orders), so the test asserts creation order plus the mode option each call carries.
  4. src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts:646 (Minor, rt4475729798): vi.doUnmock replaces the hoisted vi.unmock, the comment says what actually undoes the capture, and a new case asserts a later import resolves the real proper-lockfile. Rewritten back to vi.unmock: 1 failed | 26 passed | 4 skipped; at this head 27 passed | 4 skipped.
  5. src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts:692 (Trivial, rt4475668810): the platform skip is gone, and a second case of the same class in the same file lost its skip too; the file runs 68/68 on Windows and 68/68 in a worker reporting linux.

Chain overlap, recorded in-thread: the sites this unit shares with #1916 are the ApplyPatchTool.readFile partial observation and its publish sites, plus the DiffViewProvider teardown; the follow-up that binds a publish destination to the locked directory stays on #1916.

Gates for this round: husky hooks on for both commit and push (lint-staged eslint + prettier, pre-push check-types), never --no-verify; push used --force-with-lease pinned to the freshly read fork head 64dc74cab, read back as 52628eb86. No .changeset, no CHANGELOG edit, no suppression increase, no Stryker directive.

Follow-up inside round r112 (7f90fc299)

CodeRabbit verification reply on rt4475729779 found one non-publishing exit the first cut left open: a move publishes the destination, then a failed fs.unlink of the source is logged and tolerated, so the source stays on disk with its original bytes while its tracking entry had already been dropped - the tool-owned partial observation survived as authority for a later edit. The source entry now leaves the tracking map only when that unlink succeeded (sourceRemoved gates it); the destination entry still leaves unconditionally, because the destination really did publish.

Control: the new case move: withdraws the source observation when its unlink fails after the destination published fails at 52628eb86 (1 failed | 26 passed (27), expected true to be false on the leftover registry entry, and a follow-up guardedWrite(..., "update") to the source rode on it instead of refusing) and passes at 7f90fc299 (27 passed (27)). Reverting only the implementation to blob b78a7ad6ad55 reddens exactly that case. Fixed blobs at this head: implementation 74a22bf7644f, spec ff52ead16c31. GitHub exposes no reopen mutation, so the answer was posted as a reply inside the already-resolved thread.

Charged diff at this head against the merge base e943530c8: 33 files, 12510 insertions / 350 deletions. Suppressions remain byte-identical to the merge commit (--prune-suppressions only reformats it, and it is restored from the index each round).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File reads now distinguish complete results from partial, clipped, or truncated content.
    • File edits and writes check that the target has not changed since it was read, and prevent full replacements based on partial reads.
    • Writes to approved locations outside the workspace are rechecked before publishing.
  • Bug Fixes
    • File publishing is more resilient to interrupted writes and changing paths.
    • Existing unsaved editor content is preserved when it conflicts with a completed write.

The changes add task-owned file observations and route file-tool and editor writes through version, completeness, and path guards. They also add atomic text publication and update JSON publication to enforce path confinement and use resolved targets for locking and staging.

Changes: Observed and Guarded File Writes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record file observations and read completeness
src/core/task/*, src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts, src/integrations/misc/indentation-reader.ts, related tests
Tasks now own observation registries. Native and legacy reads record versions only when pre-read and post-read stats match. Read completeness reflects clipping, truncation, read scope, and lossless decoding.
Validate and serialize guarded writes
src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts
The new guard checks write kind, observed version and completeness, workspace containment, approved canonical targets, cancellation, and per-path ordering. Successful writes refresh observations when a version token is available.
Route file tools through guards
src/core/tools/{ApplyDiffTool,ApplyPatchTool,EditFileTool,EditTool,SearchReplaceTool,WriteToFileTool}.ts, related tests
Tool save paths now pass explicit create, update, or edit kinds. Patch and diff operations track observations and remove entries on applicable failure or cancellation paths.
Guard diff previews, saves, and teardown
src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, src/integrations/editor/committedWriteBufferConflictError.ts, related tests
Diff previews record verified observations. Saves use guarded publishing and reconcile open buffers. Teardown is serialized, and a committed write with differing unsaved buffer text raises CommittedWriteBufferConflictError.

Atomic Text and JSON Publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stage and atomically publish text
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts
The new text publisher validates staging paths, preserves file modes, syncs staged content, resolves symlink targets, and handles backups and post-commit durability errors.
Resolve and confine JSON writes
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson*.spec.ts
JSON writes now check confinement, lock resolved targets, stage beside the publish target, and delegate backup and commit handling to safeWriteText. Tests cover confinement, alias changes, staging-directory checks, and cleanup.

Explanation

The title names the main change: routing the remaining write tools (apply_diff, write_to_file, edit, edit_file, search_replace) through the guarded write path. It also cites the unit number and issue. The changeset includes guardedWrite.ts, observation registry, and tool wiring, which match the title's scope. The title is somewhat long at 74 characters and includes a tracking reference, but it stays on topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template in substance. It links the tracking issue and epic, explains what the PR changes, and gives a detailed test procedure with expected results. It includes a checklist and notes that the visual snapshot item does not apply. Gaps: the 'Related GitHub Issue' section does not use a 'Closes:' line, which the author explains is deliberate. The 'Get in Touch' section has no Discord username. The description is long and contains review-round history that belongs in comments. It also has a duplicated 'Verification at this head' heading and a checklist item that asserts 'Scope is one gate scope' with unclear meaning. These issues do not make the description incomplete.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The allowlist bypass remains in the changed guarded-write path. guardedWrite.ts:550-572 verifies containment or the approved canonical target and returns resolved. createIfAbsent and replaceIfVersion pass that value to safeWriteText at lines 207 and 290, but safeWriteText.ts:287-288 resolves it again and safeWriteText.ts:557-559 renames by pathname. If an attacker replaces the authorized parent directory with a symlink after verifyTarget() returns, the second resolution and rename can publish into an outside directory. Approved outside-workspace writes have the same race. The guarded-write tests mock safeWriteText (guardedWrite.spec.ts:38-40), so they do not exercise this final filesystem race.

Resolution

Bind final publication to the filesystem identity checked by the guard. Do not resolve or rename the authorized path through a replaceable pathname after verification. Use an opened parent directory with a no-follow publication operation, or an equivalent no-follow identity validation immediately before fs.rename. Add an integration test that swaps the authorized target or parent after final verification and confirms that no outside file changes.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The changed guarded persistence path still has a lock-target race. createIfAbsent and replaceIfVersion resolve resolveLockKey(absolutePath) before acquiring withFileLock (guardedWrite.ts:192, 257), then verifyTarget() can return a different canonical target after a symlink-directory swap (197, 261). The code checks and publishes that new target (207, 264-290) while still holding the old target's lock. A concurrent writer holding the new target's lock can pass the same absence/version check and publish first; the first writer can then atomically rename over it, losing one write. The existing test at guardedWrite.spec.ts:1106-1118 checks only the initial lock key and does not cover the swap. Awaiting the calls and using an atomic rename do not make this check-and-publish operation atomic across the two lock keys.

Resolution

Bind the advisory lock to the canonical target used for the check and publish. After acquiring a candidate lock, resolve the target and compare it with the locked target. If they differ, release the lock and retry with the new canonical key. Apply this to both createIfAbsent and replaceIfVersion, and add concurrent symlink-directory-swap regression tests for create and versioned replacement.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The standing regression finding remains unresolved. The changed tool code captures approvedCanonicalTarget before approval and forwards it to both saveDirectly and saveChanges in EditFileTool.ts, EditTool.ts, SearchReplaceTool.ts, and WriteToFileTool.ts; ApplyPatchTool.ts adds the same behavior for outside-workspace add and update operations. The four tool specs use realpath: p => String(p), so they cannot detect a distinct canonical identity. Their outside-workspace tests check only argument positions 6 and 7 on saveDirectly; they do not assert argument 8 or cover approved outside-workspace saveChanges. applyPatchTool.execute.spec.ts forces isPathOutsideWorkspace to false and has no outside-workspace add or update cases. Lower-level guard tests cannot detect missing capture or forwarding in each tool.

Resolution

Add focused tool-layer tests with realpath returning a distinct canonical target. For EditFileTool, EditTool, SearchReplaceTool, and WriteToFileTool, assert the exact approvedCanonicalTarget for approved outside-workspace writes through both saveDirectly and saveChanges. For ApplyPatchTool, add approved outside-workspace add and update cases for both save paths. Retain the guard-level identity and missing-capture tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The prior lifecycle defect remains in the changed DiffViewProvider path. saveChanges() catches a delayed guardedWrite() rejection at lines 621-726 and starts runTeardown() for discard cleanup. revertChanges() can complete first: its finalization calls reset() at lines 1028-1030, and reset() sets sessionFinalizationClaimed = true at lines 1682-1686. However, runTeardown() only checks teardownInFlight at lines 1143-1151 and starts a new pass when the claim is already complete. A queued guard rejection that settles after cancellation/disposal completed therefore repeats cleanup, including closeOwnDiffView() and restorePreviewTabs(). The changed tests cover teardown overlap and repeated revertChanges(), but do not cover a save rejection after completed finalization.

Resolution

Make runTeardown() refuse or join a session whose finalization is already claimed, including the rejected-save path. When a queued guard rejection follows completed revertChanges()/reset(), skip duplicate document discard, diff cleanup, and preview restoration, then rethrow the original guard error. Add a regression test that holds the guarded write, completes revertChanges() and reset(), releases the write to reject, and verifies each cleanup action runs once.

Outside diff Give the reconciliation failure the committed-write, do-not-retry wording.

1826-1830: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Give the reconciliation failure the committed-write, do-not-retry wording.

The fallback throws a plain Error after guardedWrite has already committed the accepted content to disk. Its text says the write is reported as failed, which is false for the disk state. It also omits the do-not-retry instruction that the adjacent conflict error gives. The tool callers do not branch on the error class, so the message text is the only signal the model receives. A model can read this as an ordinary failed edit and reapply a non-idempotent change, which duplicates it. This occurs only when the revert fails and the reopened buffer stays dirty.

Suggested fix

Nitpick Add a Task-level identity check. The current test never constructs a Task.

2016-2024: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Add a Task-level identity check. The current test never constructs a Task.

The test "two separate Task-owned registries are independent" creates two ObservationRegistry objects directly and never constructs a Task. Task creates its registry in a field initializer at src/core/task/Task.ts:299. If that field were changed to share one registry across tasks, this test would still pass. No test in the inspected spec or test files references observationRegistry on a Task. The tool specs use createMockTask, so they do not exercise the real field either.

Renaming the test would make its title match its body only. The class-level spec at src/core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts already covers two independent ObservationRegistry instances. Remove this test, or replace it with one that constructs two Task instances and asserts that their observationRegistry values are different objects. Build those tasks with the provider setup that the real Task constructor requires, as guardedWrite.spec.ts notes.

Nitpick Assert that denial skips both save paths.

335-342: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert that denial skips both save paths.

The denial test sets mockAskApproval to false and checks only that the observation is removed and handleError is not called. Neither save mock is checked. The mocks resolve silently, so a save added after denial would not fail this test. ApplyDiffTool returns before either save on denial, so this is a coverage gap, not a current defect.

No other test in src/core/tools/__tests__ covers the ApplyDiffTool denial path with a no-save assertion. The saveDirectly denial branch has no denial test at all. Add the negative assertions for both mocks:

Nitpick Add a test that reaches the lock-key confinement check.

697-702: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test that reaches the lock-key confinement check.

safeWriteJson repeats the confineTo check on the lock key (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:184-189). No test in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts reaches that branch. Each confined test with an outside path is rejected by the earlier check at lines 151-157, so removing lines 184-189 would not fail any test.

Add a case where the requested path passes the lexical check, but the lock key resolves outside confineTo. An in-scope dangling symlink whose target lies outside confineTo is one way to build it. Assert that ConfinedPathEscapeError is thrown and that acquireFileLock is never called. The mocks in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts may help build this case without real symlinks.

Nitpick Add a symlinked-ancestor case to the pre-mkdir confinement test.

722-730: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a symlinked-ancestor case to the pre-mkdir confinement test.

The test at src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts:714-736 uses a plain out-of-scope path with no symlink. A lexical-only confinement check would also reject that path, so the test does not detect removal of symlink resolution from the early check. No test covers an in-scope symlinked ancestor that points outside the scope to a missing directory.

src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:151-157 resolves the nearest existing ancestor before fs.mkdir runs at line 160, so the symlinked-ancestor case is rejected today. The proposed test covers that branch. If the check became lexical, fs.mkdir would create elsewhere-dir/missing before a later check rejects, and the assertion would fail.

🧪 Suggested test
 	test("rejects an out-of-scope target before creating any directory", async () => {
 		...
 		expect(left.filter((entry) => entry.includes(".new_") || entry.endsWith(".lock"))).toEqual([])
 	})
+
+	test.skipIf(process.platform === "win32")(
+ "rejects a missing out-of-scope directory reached through a symlinked ancestor",
+		async () => {
+ const projectDir = path.join(tempDir, "scope-link")
+ await fs.mkdir(projectDir)
+ const elsewhere = path.join(tempDir, "elsewhere-dir")
+ await fs.mkdir(elsewhere)
+ await fs.symlink(elsewhere, path.join(projectDir, ".roo"))
+ const target = path.join(projectDir, ".roo", "missing", "mcp.json")
+
+ await expect(safeWriteJson(target, { mcpServers: {} }, { confineTo: projectDir })).rejects.toThrow(
+ ConfinedPathEscapeError,
+ )
+
+ expect(fsSyncActual.existsSync(path.join(elsewhere, "missing"))).toBe(false)
+ },
+	)

This adds regression coverage for currently correct behavior. It is not a present defect.

Add a test for a symlink retargeted while the lock is held.

The confinement check after resolvePublishTarget (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:211-216) has no test that reaches it. The confineTo tests that reject a write (lines 660, 697, 725, and 751 of src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts) all fail before the lock is taken. Removing lines 211-216 would leave them passing.

Add a test that starts with a link inside the scope. Wrap proper-lockfile lock the way the existing "before the advisory lock is taken" test does (lines 669-712). After the real lock resolves, retarget the link to a file outside the scope. Expect ConfinedPathEscapeError, an unchanged outside file, and no staged .new_ files.

…r the lock

ReadFileTool reports the line range a clipped slice actually covered instead of claiming
"the file was read in full" for a slice that starts past line 1 and stops at the last line.

safeWriteJson compares the lock key it holds against the publish target resolved under the
lock, and refuses to commit through a lock that no longer names the file it is publishing.

safeWriteText creates the parent directory only after a caller-supplied staging path has been
accepted, and bounds both icacls helper calls with a finite 20s timeout - below LOCK_STALE_MS -
so a hung helper degrades to the designed "skip DACL handling" path instead of holding the
write and the per-file advisory lock open forever.
safeWriteJson picks the staging location from the publish target it resolved under the lock and
writes the staged JSON itself, before safeWriteText runs its own staging checks. A resolved path is a
pathname, not a bound directory identity: if the target's parent directory was replaced with a link
pointing elsewhere inside that window, the staged file would be created outside the directory this
write was approved for, and the rejection that follows could not undo it.

Re-resolve the staging directory and compare it against the approved one before anything is written
into it, rejecting with StagingDirectoryDriftError so the write leaves nothing on disk.
The staging-directory guard compared a lexical approval against fs.realpath of the same
directory, so the two sides were canonicalized differently. For a target that does not exist
yet resolvePublishTarget returns the path it was given, and on a Windows runner the temp root
is spelled with its 8.3 short name while realpath reports the long name: the same directory
compared unequal and every write into a directory that did not exist yet was rejected with
StagingDirectoryDriftError. That is what broke test:misc on windows-latest (four
parent-directory-creation cases).

The approval is now canonicalized with the same directory walk the confinement check above
already uses, the approved directory is statted, and the re-verification re-walks it, so both
sides of the comparison are canonical outputs of the same walk and a short/long spelling pair
compares equal by construction. A parent that really was replaced by a link still lands on a
different canonical directory and still rejects; the stat keeps rejecting a deleted approval.

Controls added in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts: a write through
an alias directory (junction on Windows, directory symlink elsewhere) with a not-yet-existing
target - red before this change with 'Refusing to stage ... alias-dir ... now resolves to
... referent-dir', green after; the approved directory replaced by an outside-pointing link
between the two walks still rejects; a deleted approved directory still rejects with 'no
existing directory'. The windows lane's own four parent-creation tests are the native 8.3
reproduction; this box has no 8.3 names, so the alias case reproduces the same
lexical-versus-canonical divergence portably.

src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts gains the one extra canonicalization the fix
adds to the recorded operation order; the lock the caller queues behind is unchanged.

Verification: vitest run of safeWriteJson.test.ts, safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts and the new
spec - 3 files, 36 passed, 4 skipped (win32-only cases), exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0
--no-warn-ignored on the three files exit 0 with --prune-suppressions reporting zero count
changes; prettier --check exit 0 on all three.
The drift control's hoisted holder cast undefined straight to two overloaded function types,
which tsc rejects (TS2352 at safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts:9 and :10). The holder is
now typed by the hoisted callback's return type instead, so there is no cast on undefined and no
double assertion.

Measured with the worktree's own node_modules (split-1833/u7 got a real pnpm install this round,
and @roo-code/types now resolves to that worktree's packages/types): tsc -p tsconfig.json exit 0
with 0 errors; vitest run of safeWriteJson.test.ts, safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts and
safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts exit 0, 3 files, 36 passed, 4 skipped.

Correction, and a withdrawal. The re-run request in this comment is withdrawn: we reproduced the failure locally on Windows in the merged tree (plain vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts --no-file-parallelism, not the coverage variant) - Tests 1 failed | 199 passed (200), the same case, Number of calls: 0.

Mechanism, measured rather than inferred: upstream's and our copy of that test are textually identical (a -U3 diff of the two Task.spec.ts blobs has no hunk for it; the 7540-vs-7444 gap is line drift), and finalizePartialToolAsk plus saveClineMessages are byte-identical between upstream/main and 40ac71f29 (the whole Task.ts main→head diff is only our ObservationRegistry field and main's cacheWrite 1h/12h TTL split). Instrumenting the merged tree at const saved = await this.saveClineMessages() shows SAVED=false, and at the catch inside it: StagingDirectoryDriftError - our own staging-identity guard refusing the ui_messages.json write under os.tmpdir() (C:\Users\eason\AppData\Local\Temp) because the directory the write was approved for and the directory the guard re-walks to are spelled differently for that temp path. The test intends only the task-history stage to fail; our guard rejects the message write instead, saveClineMessages returns false, and finalize's identical if (!saved) path then skips updateClineMessage - which is the Number of calls: 0 the lane reported.

So this is an author-side defect in this PR's safeWriteJson staging-identity guard, found by upstream's newer spec because upstream drives the same staging path through a temp directory where an alias exists on Windows. It is not Linux-only, not coverage-timing, not a flake, and not main's test being wrong. The fix is landing in this PR, in the guard: narrow it to directory identity so a differently spelled or aliased ancestor still proceeds, while a genuine re-point still fails closed. No re-run needed from a maintainer; nothing is pending on 40ac71f29 apart from that guard fix.

platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest) was red at 40ac71f on exactly one case:
core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts > 'finalizePartialToolAsk still updates the webview when a later
save stage fails' (expected "updateClineMessage" to be called with arguments, Number of calls: 0).
Measured by printing every realpath call in that window with its outcome and, at the same instant,
running fs.statSync on the same path through the never-mocked fs: not one realpath returned ENOENT
for the directory - the guard's first walk and both lock-key canonicalizations resolved it, four
times, to inode 22517998136858990 - and the only ENOENTs were on ui_messages.json itself, the
target file that genuinely is not there. The failure is the mirror image of a missing directory:
the guard's own 'await fs.stat(approvedCanonical)' reported ENOENT for a directory the unmocked fs
reported as that same inode, because Task.spec.ts:144 mocks fs/promises with
'stat: vi.fn().mockRejectedValue({ code: "ENOENT" })' for every path. The second walk never ran, so
the drift comparison never happened. The guard was failing on a question it invented, and the only
reason our own lane never caught it is that the suite which drives this write path mocks stat to
fail for every path.

The guard now acts on a single signal: the re-resolution of the approved directory succeeds and
lands on a different directory. A probe that cannot answer is not an answer - ENOENT because a
component is mid-replacement or because the caller's fs reports the path as missing, EACCES, EPERM,
ELOOP - and a failing probe is a normal condition of this write path rather than an attack, so
_probeApprovedStagingDirectory reports 'no answer' instead of throwing and the write proceeds. The
existence probe is gone. A directory that really was deleted then fails at the staging write
itself: still fail-closed, still with nothing created outside the directory the write was approved
for, and the error names the failed write instead of claiming to be evidence of replacement. The
confinement checks above deliberately keep the opposite rule: there the guard has to prove the write
is inside the scope, and a probe that cannot answer cannot prove anything. The guard's comment
paragraph was duplicated verbatim twice in the previous head (lines 297-301 and 302-306, a chain
artifact); it is collapsed here.

Controls. Reverting this change reddens exactly the two new cannot-answer cases: 'stages anyway when
the guard's probe cannot answer' (EACCES on the re-resolution - the failure the canonicalization
walk itself rethrows, so the guard really is out of answers) and 'stages anyway under the task
persistence suite's blanket missing stat', which puts Task.spec.ts:144's blanket double over a write
whose directory exists and asserts expect(statCalls).toBe(0) (under the old guard that write died
after exactly one stat call). Reverted: 2 failed | 12 passed on the two drift specs, and
Task.spec.ts 1 failed | 198 passed - the CI case and only it. Restored: 5 spec files, 306 passed |
4 skipped, and the restore is byte-identical by SHA256 on all three touched files. Two cases are
labelled in-file as absorbed rather than controls: the re-walk ENOENT case is absorbed by the walk's
retry from its nearest existing ancestor, and the real-deletion case is keyed to the second reading,
so the old guard had already cleared its probe before the directory went. The re-point case is now
decided by the OS rather than by a stub: the approved directory is renamed aside and a junction onto
a different directory is planted at the guard's second reading, realpath left unstubbed and the
wrapper choosing only when the plant happens - the junction being the portable twin of the POSIX
symlink case. safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts's 'refuses to stage when the target's parent no longer
names that directory' used to pass off the deleted existence probe (its stub named a path that never
existed, so the guard rejected for 'no existing directory'); it now flips on the fourth reading with
expect(readings).toBe(4), which is evidence about the re-verification and fails loudly if the guard
ever stops taking it.

Known property, deliberately not fixed here: when the approved directory is replaced before the
guard's first reading, both readings agree and no layer rejects the write - measured byte-for-byte
the same outcome before and after this change (payload published at wherever the approved pathname
now points, no staged file left in either spelling, only the lock directory travelling with the
renamed directory). The file can be published into a directory the writer's lock does not name.
Closing that means safeWriteText binding the publish destination to the directory its own advisory
lock names, which is a design change in the path Zoo-Code-Org#1916's guardedWrite layer builds on, so it is a
follow-up unit rather than something to smuggle into a green-lane fix.

Gates, all in split-1833/u7 against its own install: tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit exit 0; eslint
--prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 on the three files exit 0, with src/eslint-suppressions.json
restored to HEAD bytes and the parsed (file,rule)->count delta computed in Node straight from
'git cat-file blob' - headSum 3537, nowSum 3537, 325 keys on both sides, 0 deltas, and the three
touched files carrying no suppression entries at all; prettier --write then --check exit 0; root
'pnpm run check-types' exit 0 (10 packages cache hits, zoo-code:check-types ran 'tsc --noEmit'
fresh). Cross-checked in a scratch merge of 40ac71f with upstream/main
6bbc7a0: the CI case is green there with this fix and red there
without it at the same merge, and the single remaining failure in that tree - main's 'bills a 1h
cache write at the 1h rate', expected +0 to be close to 0.6 - reproduces at pure merge content
without these three files, so it is the scratch tree's donor-linked install resolving
@roo-code/telemetry outside the merge, not this change.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused tool-layer tests with `realpath` returning a distinct canonical
target. Assert the exact final `approvedCanonicalTarget` argument for approved
outside-workspace writes through both `saveDirectly` and `saveChanges` in
`EditFileTool`, `EditTool`, `SearchReplaceTool`, and `WriteToFileTool`. Add
outside-workspace add and update cases for both save paths in `ApplyPatchTool`.
Retain the guard-level identity and missing-capture tests.

- Security Boundaries:
Bind final publication to the filesystem identity checked by the guard. Do not
resolve the authorized path again after verification. Use an opened parent
directory, or an equivalent no-follow identity validation immediately before
`fs.rename`. Add an integration regression test that swaps the authorized target
after final verification and confirms that no outside file changes.

- Persistence Integrity:
Bind the advisory lock to the same canonical target used for the check and
publish. After acquiring a candidate lock, resolve the target and compare it
with the lock target. If the target changed, release the lock and retry with the
new canonical key. Apply this to both `createIfAbsent` and `replaceIfVersion`,
and add a regression test for a symlink-directory swap with concurrent creates
and versioned replacements.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Make `runTeardown()` refuse or join a session whose finalization is already

completed `revertChanges()`/`reset()`, skip duplicate document discard, diff
cleanup, and preview restoration, then rethrow the original guard error. Add a
regression test that holds the guarded write, completes `revertChanges()` and
`reset()`, releases the write to reject, and verifies each cleanup action runs
once.

Repo: Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code PR: 1918
File: src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:410-427
Timestamp: 2026-10-06T00:19:25.595Z
Learning: In src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, the TypeScript safeWriteText API intentionally requires confirmed directory-entry durability for a successful POSIX return. Directory-open or directory-fsync failures, including EINVAL, ENOTSUP, EISDIR, and EPERM, must produce PostCommitDurabilityError after the commit rather than be ignored. The error identifies the target containing the committed content. When backup mode is enabled, retaining the old-content backup on this failure path is intentional recovery behavior; do not recommend deleting it merely because the commit rename succeeded.

## Test Placement Guidance

- For a guard or validator, test the accept path and the reject path through every public entry point. A test that only rejects bad input does not prove the guard still accepts good input.

minimal, and validate.

Inline comments:
Review comments at @src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts:
- Around line 110-116: ApplyPatchTool must withdraw its own partial hunk-read
observations whenever the patch does not publish, so later edits cannot reuse
them as model-read evidence. Track each newly created observation by path and
exact registry entry; on hunk-processing failures, approval denials, and the
outer catch, forget it only if that same entry is still current, and retain
observations for model reads or successful publishes. Use the existing
ApplyPatchTool handlers and observation-registry APIs, and cover the
approval-denial case with a regression test confirming a later edit is rejected
as unread.

Review comments at @src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts:
- Line 765: Update the post-publish cleanup in saveChanges and both teardown
branches in revertChanges to close only this provider’s diff view using the
known absolutePath. Replace the broad closeAllDiffViews() calls with the
provider-scoped closeOwnDiffView(absolutePath) operation, preserving the
existing surrounding behavior.

Review comments at @src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts:
- Line 646: In the cleanup block for the test that mocks proper-lockfile,
replace the hoisted vi.unmock call with vi.doUnmock so the mock registration is
removed at runtime before vi.resetModules runs.

---

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused tool-layer tests with `realpath` returning a distinct canonical
target. For `EditFileTool`, `EditTool`, `SearchReplaceTool`, and
`WriteToFileTool`, assert the exact final `approvedCanonicalTarget` for approved
outside-workspace writes through both `saveDirectly` and `saveChanges`. For
`ApplyPatchTool`, add approved outside-workspace add and update cases for both
save paths. Retain the guard-level identity and missing-capture tests.

- Security Boundaries:
Bind final publication to the filesystem identity checked by the guard. Do not
resolve or rename the authorized path through a replaceable pathname after
verification. Use an opened parent directory with a no-follow publication
operation, or an equivalent no-follow identity validation immediately before
`fs.rename`. Add an integration test that swaps the authorized target or parent
after final verification and confirms that no outside file changes.

- Persistence Integrity:
Bind the advisory lock to the canonical target used for the check and publish.
After acquiring a candidate lock, resolve the target and compare it with the
locked target. If they differ, release the lock and retry with the new canonical
key. Apply this to both `createIfAbsent` and `replaceIfVersion`, and add
regression tests for symlink-directory swaps with concurrent create and
versioned-replacement writes.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Make `runTeardown()` refuse or join a session whose finalization is already
claimed, including the rejected-save path. When a queued guard rejection follows
completed `revertChanges()`/`reset()`, skip duplicate document discard, diff
cleanup, and preview restoration, then rethrow the original guard error. Add a
regression test that holds the guarded write, completes `revertChanges()` and
`reset()`, releases the write to reject, and verifies each cleanup action runs
once.

## ESLint Suppressions

`src/eslint-suppressions.json` tracks per-file counts of suppressed lint rules. Suppression counts must never increase. When touching a file, prefer reducing its count when the fix is local and low-risk; avoid broad unrelated cleanup.

Learning: In Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code, the TypeScript ApplyPatchTool.handleUpdateFile move branch in src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts deliberately rejects destinations outside every workspace root with a tool error. Such destinations must not receive outside-workspace write authorization or undergo destination canonicalizeForApproval before that rejection. Allowed move destinations rely on guardedWrite workspace containment.

Learning: In the TypeScript Windows write path in `src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts`, DACL preservation is intentionally best-effort. `_saveDaclWindows` failure must not prevent publication, because `icacls` can fail on non-NTFS mounts or in permission-restricted environments. `_restoreDaclWindows` failure is non-fatal after commit. Do not require fatal DACL handling or rollback of committed content under this contract.

Learning: In Zoo-Code, DiffViewProvider.open in src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts intentionally records a stat-matched preview observation with complete: false for an unread existing file. The edit guard accepts this partial observation; this policy is documented and asserted. Do not treat that acceptance alone as an unintended authorization bypass. The separate question of whether the preview token is a valid baseline for previously constructed edit content requires a cross-unit maintainer decision.

Learning: In src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, saveDirectly() treats post-publish buffer reconciliation as a condition for reporting success. closeFileTab() is best-effort and skips dirty tabs. The subsequent workspace.textDocuments lookup and isDirty check independently reject the operation if the dirty buffer survives. Do not treat successful tab closure as this flow's contract or require discarding unsaved user edits merely to report success.

Learning: In Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code, the TypeScript guardedWrite API in src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts keeps core host-agnostic: extension-host callers supply other VS Code workspace folders through GuardedWriteOptions.additionalRoots. GuardedWriteOptions.approvedOutsideWorkspace represents a post-approval authorization, not path classification. ApplyDiffTool in src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts has no outside-workspace approval flow, so it must not receive that authorization merely because its target is outside the workspace.

## ESLint Suppressions

### Typed test files

New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:

- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

## Test Placement Guidance

- For a guard or validator, test the accept path and the reject path through every public entry point. A test that only rejects bad input does not prove the guard still accepts good input.

src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts: 1

349-358: Create dirPath before _stagingDir runs for a self-staged write.

This finding was reported earlier and is still unresolved. If dirPath is missing, _stagingDir(dirPath) at Line 349 creates every missing ancestor with mkdirSync(..., { recursive: true, mode: 0o700 }). The fs.mkdir(dirPath, { recursive: true }) call at Line 358 runs later and does not change the mode of a directory that already exists. As a result, the parent directories that a normal guardedWrite create produces are private to the writing UID. The comment at Lines 356-357 says this behavior is intended, but it does not address the mode. Move the fs.mkdir call into the else branch before the _stagingDir call. The caller-staged branch keeps its mkdir-after-validation order.

src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts: 1

692-716: Remove the it.skipIf(process.platform !== "win32") gate from the timeout bounds test.

This finding was reported earlier. The test already passes platform: "win32" and uses the mocked execFile. The skip means a regression that removes timeout fails only on the Windows lane.

src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts: 1

344-360: The ancestor-swap window between the final probe and _streamDataToFile is still open.

This finding was reported earlier and is tracked in #2317. _probeApprovedStagingDirectory returns a pathname. fsSync.createWriteStream(actualTempNewFilePath) re-resolves that pathname when it opens the file. A swap after the second probe can therefore still stage JSON outside the approved directory. The change to tolerate an inconclusive probe does not widen that window. It also does not close it.

src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory.spec.ts: 1

244-298: This test records a write that lands outside the approved directory as expected behavior.

The test asserts that settings.json is published into elsewhere while the lock stays with the renamed directory. This is the unfixed staging and publication race tracked in #2317 and in the open safeWriteJson.ts thread. When the handle-bound primitive lands, change this assertion to expect a rejection. Do not leave it as a pinned contract.

Comment thread src/core/tools/ApplyPatchTool.ts Resolved
…d in review

Review round r112, one change per thread, in the order the findings came in:

- ApplyPatchTool: forget a withdrawn observation only while the registry still
holds the exact entry this tool published, so a failed apply_patch can no longer
drop another writer's newer observation of the same file.
- DiffViewProvider: the three teardown sites that already know the absolute path
close only their own diff view; closeAllDiffViews stays as reset()'s fallback for
the case where no path is known.
- safeWriteText: create the target's parent directory before the private staging
directory, so a self-staged write no longer publishes its target into a directory
that only the staging mkdir made, with the staging mode.
- safeWriteText.spec: the two win32 cases that hand in their own platform no longer
skip themselves on a non-Windows host.
- safeWriteJson.test: undo the proper-lockfile capture with vi.doUnmock, the runtime
form, so a later import in the same file resolves the real module again.

Specs: applyPatchTool.execute 26/26, DiffViewProvider 158/158, safeWriteText 68/68
(also 68/68 with process.platform reported as linux), safeWriteJson 27 passed / 4
skipped, safeWriteJson.stagingDirectory 7/7. Reverting each fix reddens exactly the
test that names it: 4, 8, 1, 1 and one skipped case off Windows.
…s unlink removed it

CodeRabbit verification reply on rt4475729779 found the last non-publishing exit. The move
publishes the destination, then a failed `fs.unlink` of the source is logged and tolerated,
leaving the source on disk with its original bytes - while the tracking entry for that path
had already been dropped, so the tool-owned partial observation survived as authority for a
later edit. The source entry now leaves the tracking map only when that unlink succeeded;
the destination entry still leaves it unconditionally, because the destination really did
publish.

Control: the new case `move: withdraws the source observation when its unlink fails after
the destination published` fails at 52628eb (1 failed | 26 passed, `expected true to be
false` on the leftover registry entry, and the follow-up guarded write rode on it instead of
refusing) and passes here (27 passed (27)). Reverting only the implementation to blob
b78a7ad reddens exactly that case.

outside-workspace writes through both `saveDirectly` and `saveChanges`. For
`ApplyPatchTool`, add approved outside-workspace add and update cases for both

If they differ, release the lock and retry with the new canonical
key. Apply this to both `createIfAbsent` and `replaceIfVersion`, and add
concurrent symlink-directory-swap regression tests for create and versioned
replacement.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Make `runTeardown()` refuse or join a session whose finalization is already
claimed, including the rejected-save path. When a queued guard rejection follows
completed `revertChanges()`/`reset()`, skip duplicate document discard, diff
cleanup, and preview restoration, then rethrow the original guard error. Add a
regression test that holds the guarded write, completes `revertChanges()` and
`reset()`, releases the write to reject, and verifies each cleanup action runs
once.

2016-2025: Earlier test findings are still present at this head.

The test at Line 2016 calls ObservationRegistry directly and never runs readFileTool.execute. Lines 2264, 2295, 2353 and 2464 still destructure an unused _calledPath and check only the spy argument, not the registry entry. Earlier review threads marked both findings as addressed.

Restore the module mocks in finally and assert the error type.

This test resets realpath and isPathOutsideWorkspace only after its assertions. If an assertion fails, both doubles leak into later tests. Those tests then fail for the wrong reason. The sibling tests at Lines 507-526 use try/finally for this reason.

expect.any(Error) also accepts any error. realpathNearest converts the EPERM rejection into a GuardRejectedError. Assert that type so a regression to a raw or different error fails the test.

Route the diff-view move destination through the guard.

If preventFocusDisruption is off, the move branch writes the destination with fs.mkdir plus fs.writeFile(moveAbsolutePath, ...). This write skips guardedWrite. The focus-disruption branch at Lines 544-607 applies four checks that this branch does not:

  • It rejects a partial source moved onto an existing destination.
  • It rejects an unobserved existing destination ("read before a full-file write").
  • It runs the version CAS on an observed destination.
  • It runs the canonical containment check. isPathOutsideWorkspace at Line 525 is lexical. fs.writeFile follows a symlink at moveAbsolutePath, so a link inside the workspace that points outside it gets written.

The PR goal is to route apply_patch writes through the guard. Two outcomes follow from this gap: the diff-view mode overwrites destinations that the direct-save mode refuses, and it can write through a symlink outside the workspace.

Use the same guarded path in both modes. Run the destination completeness carry, then call saveDirectly(change.movePath, newContent, false, diagnosticsEnabled, writeDelayMs, "create", sourceComplete, false, undefined). Alternatively, call guardedWrite(task, change.movePath, newContent, "create", sourceComplete, { additionalRoots }) directly. Add a diff-view move test in which the destination already exists and is unobserved, and assert the rejection.

Update the diff-view move branch that writes to moveAbsolutePath to use the same
guarded write path as direct-save mode, carrying over the destination

Do not replace the current observation object when you restore the pre-open observation.

For writeKind === "edit", saveChanges always calls observe() with the preOpenObservation values. observe() stores a new FileObservation object even when the current entry already has the same version and completeness. ApplyPatchTool withdraws its hunk-read observation by object identity (registry.get(path) === entry). After this restore, the identity check fails.

Trigger:

  1. apply_patch updates a file that the model never read, with diff view enabled. readFile records a partial observation and tracks that object in toolObservations.
  2. open() snapshots that partial observation into preOpenObservation.
  3. saveChanges(..., "edit") calls observe() and replaces the object.
  4. guardedWrite fails without publishing. Examples: lock acquisition fails, or safeWriteText fails before commit. The on-disk token does not change.
  5. The finally block in ApplyPatchTool skips the withdrawal because the stored object differs.

Consequence: a partial observation with the current token stays in the registry. A later edit, search_replace, edit_file or apply_diff passes the edit guard and the CAS for a file the model never read.

Fix: restore only when the current entry differs.

This test treats the known staging bypass as correct behaviour. Mark it as an expected failure instead.

The test swaps the approved directory for a junction that points to elsewhere, before the guard's first reading. It then asserts that elsewhere/settings.json contains the published JSON (Lines 290-291). That outcome is the confinement and lock-identity gap tracked in #2317.

As written, the suite passes because the bypass happens. A later fix for #2317 will turn this test red, and someone could "fix" the fix to keep the test green. In the earlier review thread, the author said a test for this ordering that passes against the current code "would mean weakening the assertion". This test is that weakened form. The path instructions also reject a test assertion that accepts an incorrect result.

State the required behaviour and mark the case as a known failure. Vitest then reports it as expected, and the fix flips it to a normal pass.

backup: true now copies and fsyncs the whole old file on every JSON write, and the copy gives little protection.

The old safeWriteJson backup was a rename. That rename was cheap and was needed because the target moved away during the commit. In safeWriteText Step 3, backup: true now runs openSync("wx"), fs.copyFile(target, backup), fs.chmod, and a fsyncSync of the copy. Step 6 then deletes the copy. All of this runs under the advisory file lock. Hot callers such as saveApiMessages (src/core/task-persistence/apiMessages.ts:135-162) write the full conversation history. Each such write now also reads, writes, and flushes the previous file. That roughly doubles disk I/O and lengthens how long the lock is held.

The commit is a rename of a fully written temp file, and the target never moves. A pre-commit failure therefore leaves the target untouched, and safeWriteText deletes the copy on that path. The copy is kept only after a PostCommitDurabilityError. On that path, the copy's own directory entry also lives in the directory that just failed its fsync.

Do one of the following:

  • Remove backup: true here, because the atomic rename already protects the old content.
  • Keep the flag only if the post-commit recovery copy is a requirement. In that case, state that requirement next to the option.
