feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models - #2331
Friendli models now come from the public https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models endpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixed friendliModels list stays as a fallback.
src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.
FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, through getModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.
Friendli is now a dynamic provider. requestRouterModels always fetches its catalog.
Webview: The model picker and useSelectedModel use the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.
Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
Test Procedure
Unit tests:
cd src && npx vitest run api/providers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
cd webview-ui && npx vitest run src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useSelectedModel.spec.ts src/components/settings/utils/__tests__/providerModelConfig.spec.ts
pnpm check-types
The tests cover these cases:
Construction with no API key does not fail and does not fetch the catalog.
The fetcher calls the public URL and forwards the abort signal.
The handler loads the catalog one time, and waits for it before it streams.
An empty catalog falls back to the fixed list.
An unknown model ID keeps its ID when the catalog request fails.
The webview uses the fixed list before the router models load.
Manual check:
Run curl -s https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models. The response has a data list.
Select the Friendli provider in Zoo Code settings.
Open the model picker. It shows the models from the response.

Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: The PR title and description use Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100): short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Test Helpers (test changes only): Shared test helpers (src/test-utils/, @/utils/test-utils) are used only for mechanical duplication; test intent and scenario-specific mocks remain visible.
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): If a user would notice this change at a glance (layout, theme tokens, brand elements, empty/error states), I added or updated a *.visual.tsx snapshot in webview-ui/. See webview-ui/AGENTS.md → "When a UI change needs a snapshot".
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
Friendli retrieves available models and details such as capabilities, context limits, and pricing from its public catalog without credentials.
Discovered models appear in settings and can be selected, including models not in the static catalog.
Static model information remains available while the catalog loads or when catalog details are unavailable.
Configured Friendli model selections—including IDs not found in either catalog—are preserved.
Toggle-only reasoning models can enable or disable reasoning without selecting an effort level.
Friendli is added to dynamic provider handling. The system fetches and maps its public model catalog, includes the models in router responses, and uses fetched metadata in provider and webview model selection with static fallbacks.

Summary
Recognize Friendli and map its catalog packages/types/src/provider-settings.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/provider-identifiers.test.ts, src/shared/api.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts
Friendli is added to the dynamic provider list and model-fetch options. The fetcher validates catalog responses and maps chat-model metadata, including limits, capabilities, prices, reasoning options, and descriptions. Tests cover mapping and failure cases.
Load Friendli models into router results src/api/providers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts, src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/*
FriendliHandler loads and caches fetched models, handles cancellation and timeouts, and resolves model metadata from fetched records, the static catalog, or sane defaults. Router model results include Friendli.
Use fetched Friendli metadata in model selection webview-ui/src/components/settings/utils/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/ApiOptions.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/*, webview-ui/src/components/chat/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/providers/__tests__/*, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/validate.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/ApiOptions.interactions.spec.tsx
The settings and chat model pickers and selected-model hook use fetched Friendli metadata when available and fall back to the static catalog. The router-model query preserves catalogs containing an own __proto__ model ID. Supporting test fixtures include Friendli router data.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models" names the main change. The PR adds dynamic Friendli model discovery from the public catalog endpoint, and the raw summary confirms a new fetcher, handler loading, and webview changes that use fetched models. The title is specific and uses the conventional commit format. It does not mention the no-API-key behavior change, but it does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links the issue (Closes: #2332), describes the how and the reviewer checks, gives a test procedure with commands and a manual check, and fills in the checklist and documentation section. The Visual Snapshots section says no snapshot applies, but the author marked the visual snapshot item as checked, which is inconsistent. The description also omits the Discord username in the Get in Touch section, and it says the webview uses the fixed list before router models load. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2332] Objective 1, current model list: The picker shows models that Friendli serves now. getFriendliModels in src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts calls https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models with no Authorization header. It skips entries whose mode is set and not chat. Friendli is a dynamic provider. The webview picker and useSelectedModel use fetched models when present, so models removed upstream do not appear once the catalog loads. [#2332] Objective 2, per-model values: parseFriendliModel maps context_length to contextWindow, max_completion_tokens to maxTokens, pricing.input, pricing.output, and pricing.input_cache_read to prices and cache-read price, input_modalities to supportsImages, and reasoning_options to supportsReasoningEffort, reasoningEffort, and supportsReasoningBinary for toggle-only models. FriendliHandler.getModel() reads fetched records first, so these values reach requests and the UI. [#2332] Objective 3, fixed-list fallback: an invalid response or request failure returns an empty result, and the handler then uses friendliModels or openAiModelInfoSaneDefaults. The webview uses the fixed list before router models load. The keyless request path is the public endpoint, as the issue requires. Non-coding items (manual curl check, Discord contact) do not apply. The PR reports no executed test output, and this verdict does not rely on test execution. It rests on source inspection of the fetcher at the reviewed head and on the test coverage described in the summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2332] Changes that implement the objectives: the new Friendli fetcher; FriendliHandler catalog loading, waiting, and fallback; friendli in dynamicProviders; requestRouterModels and webviewMessageHandler.ts; GetModelsOptions in shared/api.ts; getStaticModelsForProvider, ModelSelector.tsx, ApiOptions.tsx, and useSelectedModel.ts; and matching test fixture updates. Changes the PR description does not list, but which relate to #2332: buildFriendliReasoningParams handles toggle-only models, which supports the reasoning-effort requirement; catalog wait, timeout, and cancellation handling in createMessage and completePrompt apply to the new pre-request catalog wait; null-prototype catalog results, own-property lookups, and the useRouterModels structural-sharing bypass for __proto__ model IDs protect fetched upstream Friendli IDs; getModel() keeps a configured model ID absent from the fixed list, as the PR description states. No change was shown to be unrelated to #2332. The PR description omits some of these changes. This is a documentation gap, not a scope failure. The HTTP 401 result for keyless requests follows from the public-catalog design and is a behavior change that the PR states.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused tests cover Friendli catalog mapping, fallback, cancellation, request handling, and model selection. Shared catalog-loading tests cover concurrency and cancellation. The UI change updates model data, not layout or durable visual states.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path shows a concrete security-boundary failure. The Friendli catalog request uses a fixed public URL without credentials. The fetcher validates the response and uses a null-prototype model map. Model selection retains the existing organization allowlist checks.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure conditions. Friendli catalog writes use the existing awaited cache write and atomic JSON replacement. Write failures are logged, and the in-memory catalog remains available.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A cancelled Friendli catalog load can duplicate cache writes after a restart. src/api/providers/friendli.ts:93-98 calls getModels without a signal, so cancellation detaches the outer wait but leaves the cache waiter active. If a new task starts with an empty cache before the fetch completes, both handlers share the network fetch but each writes the returned catalog to disk (modelCache.ts:241-255). Repeated cancellations can queue multiple identical locked writes.
Resolution
Make catalog loading release cancelled cache waiters while preserving active shared waiters, or ensure the shared fetch persists its result only once. Add a test that cancels a cold-cache load, starts a new handler, and checks that only one cache write occurs.

84-89: Prevent a failed or empty catalog fetch from being retried per handler construction.
modelsLoad is memoized per handler instance. A new handler repeats the fetch when the cache is empty. The fetch now starts lazily in createMessage and completePrompt, not in the constructor. This addresses the earlier construction-time concern. No further action is needed.

Retry an empty or failed catalog on the next request.
If the first catalog load returns {} or rejects, modelsLoad remains settled. Later requests on the same handler never retry, so a fetched-only model keeps fallback metadata after the catalog recovers. Clear the settled promise on empty results and failures while retaining the shared in-flight promise. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded already implements that retry pattern. Description
Friendli models now come from the public
https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/modelsendpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixedfriendliModelslist stays as a fallback.src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, throughgetModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.requestRouterModelsalways fetches its catalog.useSelectedModeluse the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
