ci: fix e2e on ubuntu-26.04 and run it against the Rust ADC - #504
Port of apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907. Every e2e and conformance job fails before any test runs, on master since 2026-10-27 and on PRs since 2026-10-23:
make kind-load-adc-image
Command Output: ctr: rpc error: code = NotFound desc = content digest sha256:08d3b285700dffd91925e9d6328690d3336ac3adf6539aab94988bcecd727715: not found
ubuntu-latest moved to ubuntu-26.04 (Docker 29, containerd image store). With that store, docker save exports the whole multi-platform index of a pulled image although only the host platform's content is present, and kind load docker-image imports with ctr images import --all-platforms, so it fails on the missing platform. Upgrading kind does not help: v0.33.0 and main import the same way.
Makefile: load every image through a kind-load-image helper. Under the containerd image store it saves only the Docker server's platform with docker save --platform and loads it with kind load image-archive; otherwise it keeps kind load docker-image (docker save --platform needs Docker 28+). This covers the EE gateway/dashboard images as well.
adc extraction: ghcr.io/api7/adc:dev is now a distroless image whose entrypoint is a single /adc binary, so copying main.cjs fails. Copy /adc and set ADC_BIN to it in both e2e workflows.
MQTT e2e: ubuntu-26.04 hosts ship an AppArmor profile for /usr/sbin/mosquitto that path-attaches inside kind pods and denies reading /mosquitto/config/mosquitto.conf (exit 3, apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="mosquitto"). That config file has no active lines, so start /usr/sbin/mosquitto without -c.
L4 upstream scheme: TCPRoute, UDPRoute and TLSRoute upstreams had no scheme. ADC derives the service type from it, so against API7 EE the service became http and its stream routes were rejected with can not create a Stream Route to the HTTP Service. These upstreams now get tcp/udp unless a BackendTrafficPolicy already set an L4 scheme.
Consumer webhook spec: the Rust ADC validates a credential as <username>/credentials/<id>, which APISIX caps at 128 characters. The spec's consumer name produced a 133-character id, so the valid Consumer was rejected. The spec now uses a shorter name. Real syncs are not affected; only validation of very long usernames is.
Validation: the image-loading and MQTT changes pass all 25 checks on apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907, which ran on ubuntu-26.04. The Makefile helper was also verified locally on Docker 29 (containerd store) and Docker 27 (overlay2) with kind v0.27.0.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Endpoint status responses now distinguish configuration that has been accepted from configuration that has been applied.
End-to-end tests can use configurable ADC images and read resources from standalone APISIX.
Bug Fixes
Improved configuration failure reporting with endpoint details and distinct failure reasons.
TCP, TLS, and UDP routes now use the corresponding upstream protocol schemes.
Chores
Updated end-to-end test workflows to use ADC version 0.31.0 and improved Kind image loading.
Updated the MQTT test deployment to start Mosquitto with an explicit command.
The PR updates ADC response handling and L4 upstream schemes, changes ADC binary and image setup in E2E workflows, adds standalone APISIX resource loading to the E2E scaffold, and adjusts Kind image loading and E2E tests.
TCP, TLS, and UDP route translation assigns schemes to backend and default upstreams. TCP translation preserves existing TCP, UDP, and TLS schemes. Tests cover TCP scheme selection.
E2E infrastructure and test setup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Rust ADC workflow and container setup .github/workflows/apisix-e2e-test.yml, .github/workflows/e2e-test.yml, .github/adc-rust/*
Both workflows use ADC Rust version 0.31.0, download the Linux AMD64 binary, build and load the adc-rust:dev image, and set ADC_BIN and ADC_IMAGE. The container entrypoint maps a leading server argument to ingress-server.
Kind image loading Makefile
A shared macro saves the Docker server’s OS and architecture to an archive when Docker uses the containerd snapshotter, loads it into the named Kind cluster, and removes the archive. Other cases use kind load docker-image. Image-loading targets use the macro.
E2E deployment and test adjustments test/e2e/framework/apisix_consts.go, test/e2e/framework/ingress.go, test/e2e/framework/manifests/ingress.yaml, test/e2e/crds/v2/streamroute.go, test/e2e/crds/v2/tls.go, test/e2e/webhook/consumer.go
The ingress deployment uses ADC_IMAGE, which defaults to ghcr.io/api7/adc:dev. The Mosquitto test invokes its executable directly. The TLS test uses a retryable raw HTTP client, and the webhook test changes its Consumer name and adds validation comments.
Standalone APISIX scaffold
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Standalone resource loading and selection test/e2e/scaffold/adc_standalone.go, test/e2e/scaffold/apisix_deployer.go
The scaffold reads configuration from the APISIX Admin API, reconstructs service, upstream, route, and stream-route relationships, converts SSL data, and provides resource list methods. The deployer selects this resource for the standalone APISIX provider.

Explanation
The title names two changes that appear in the changeset: the Ubuntu 26.04 e2e fixes (Makefile kind image-loading helper, Mosquitto command change, and the TCP/UDP/TLS L4 scheme assignment) and running e2e against the Rust ADC (ADC_RUST_VERSION 0.31.0 workflow changes, adc-rust Dockerfile and entrypoint, ADC_IMAGE/ADC_BIN wiring, and the executor and types updates that follow the Rust /sync contract). It is specific, uses the conventional ci: prefix, and is a single concise sentence. The main changes are covered, though the title does not mention the standalone Admin API dataplane resource reading or the executor response-handling rework.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
No security-check failure was introduced. Category 1: No issues found; ADC request logging retains token and resource redaction, and new endpoint status fields contain server, success, confirmation, and reason only. Category 2: No issues found; no database or secret persistence changes. Category 3: No issues found; no mutating endpoint or permission logic changed. Category 4: No issues found; no production cross-resource access path changed. Category 5: No issues found; the new InsecureSkipVerify setting is confined to an e2e test client and uses the intended test certificate bypass. Category 6: No issues found; no shared-resource deletion or binding logic changed. Category 7: No issues found; no secret-reference resolution path changed.
Full details: E2e Test Quality Review
Explanation
The blocking error-handling issue remains in the PR-added httpsGet helper at test/e2e/crds/v2/tls.go:323-324. It discards both resp.Body.Close() and io.Copy() errors. A body read or close failure can therefore return an HTTP status with a nil error, allowing the /ipEventually assertion to pass without a complete response.
Resolution
Return the io.Copy error from httpsGet and propagate the resp.Body.Close() error when no earlier error exists. Preserve cleanup on all paths, and return these errors to the existing Eventually callbacks so transient or incomplete responses are retried.

ghcr.io/api7/adc:dev is now the Rust ADC. Its CLI has no
apisix-standalone backend, so the scaffold's adc dump fails, and it
breaks the L4 route and consumer webhook specs against API7 EE. Pin the
e2e workflows to ADC 0.31.0, the Makefile default.
…er#2852, #2868)
Download the pinned Rust ADC release, wrap it in an adc-rust:dev sidecar
image and point ADC_BIN/ADC_IMAGE at it in both e2e workflows, replacing
the previous pin to the Node ADC.
- executor: follow the Rust /sync status and response contract for
apisix-standalone
- scaffold: read apisix-standalone resources from the Admin API, since
the Rust CLI has no apisix-standalone backend for adc dump
- framework: make the sidecar image configurable through ADC_IMAGE
TCPRoute, UDPRoute and TLSRoute upstreams were sent without a scheme.
ADC derives the service type from the upstream scheme, so the service
became an http service and API7 EE rejected its stream routes with
"can not create a Stream Route to the HTTP Service".
Set tcp (TCPRoute, TLSRoute) or udp (UDPRoute) unless a
BackendTrafficPolicy already chose an L4 scheme.
ADC validates a credential as "<username>/credentials/<id>", which
APISIX limits to 128 characters. With the e2e namespace prefix the
previous consumer name produced a 133-character id, so the valid
Consumer was rejected.

Fail closed on a 422 response that carries no failure details.
The handler accepts HTTP 422 as a SyncResult response. The code comment at Lines 442-444 says 422 means every server rejected the write. If a 422 body has an empty Failed and no unsuccessful EndpointStatus, the handler falls through to return nil. The caller then treats a rejected write as a successful sync.
The test at executor_test.go lines 383-393 asserts this behavior. A realistic trigger is a 422 body from an ADC server version that does not populate endpoint_status. The 422 status is the only failure signal in that case. Return a generic HTTP 422: <body> error for 422 after the endpoint check, and change that test to expect an error.

Preserve a singular SSL sni.
If an APISIX SSL entry contains sni rather than snis, standaloneSSL discards the name. SSL().List() returns the certificate with an empty Snis slice. Add a singular field and convert it to SSL.Snis. Both forms are valid APISIX SSL fields. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Unverified finding

Convert singular APISIX route fields before returning routes.
If a route uses APISIX’s valid uri or host field, direct decoding leaves ADC Route.Uris or Route.Hosts empty. Route().List() and nested service routes then report incomplete matches. Decode the singular fields and populate the ADC slices. APISIX permits both singular and plural forms; adctypes.Route contains only the plural forms. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

httpexpect's reporter fails the spec on the first TLS handshake error,
which defeats the Eventually retry while APISIX is still rebuilding its
SNI router after the sync. With the Rust ADC this window is wider and the
spec failed on both runs. Use RequestAssert as upstream does and drop the
redundant single request after it.

Handle endpoint-only ADC failures in both provider status resolvers.
For an endpoint-only failure, handleHTTPResponse sets EndpointStatuses and leaves FailedStatuses empty. Both resolveADCExecutionErrors functions branch only on len(failedStatus.FailedStatuses). When the length is zero, they call handleEmptyFailedStatuses. That function applies the generic failedStatus.Error() text to every Service, Consumer, SSL, and global rule in the config. No provider code reads EndpointStatuses.
Healthy resources can therefore show the failure text for an unrelated endpoint. The status does not identify the affected endpoint or its resources. The test comment in executor_test.go states that EndpointStatuses drives per-instance availability. No consumer in internal/ implements that behavior.
Add an endpoint-status branch to both resolvers before the FailedStatuses check. Do not rely on a change to ADCExecutionServerAddrError.Error(), because the branch condition does not depend on that method.

What this PR does / why we need it:
Port of apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907. Every e2e and conformance job fails before any test runs, on master since 2026-10-27 and on PRs since 2026-10-23:
ubuntu-latestmoved to ubuntu-26.04 (Docker 29, containerd image store). With that store, docker saveexports the whole multi-platform index of a pulled image although only the host platform's content is present, andkind load docker-imageimports withctr images import --all-platforms, so it fails on the missing platform. Upgrading kind does not help: v0.33.0 and main import the same way.kind-load-imagehelper. Under the containerd image store it saves only the Docker server's platform withdocker save --platformand loads it withkind load image-archive; otherwise it keepskind load docker-image(docker save --platformneeds Docker 28+). This covers the EE gateway/dashboard images as well.ghcr.io/api7/adc:devis now a distroless image whose entrypoint is a single/adcbinary, so copyingmain.cjsfails. Copy/adcand setADC_BINto it in both e2e workflows./usr/sbin/mosquittothat path-attaches inside kind pods and denies reading/mosquitto/config/mosquitto.conf(exit 3,apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="mosquitto"). That config file has no active lines, so start/usr/sbin/mosquittowithout-c.ghcr.io/api7/adc:devis now the Rust ADC, so the e2e jobs move to it the same way test: add adc rust variant for e2e apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2852 and #2868 did. Both e2e workflows download the pinned Rust release (ADC_RUST_VERSION: "0.31.0"), wrap it in anadc-rust:devsidecar image (.github/adc-rust/), and setADC_BIN/ADC_IMAGE. The executor follows the Rust/synccontract for apisix-standalone. Since the Rust CLI has no apisix-standalone backend, the scaffold reads standalone resources from the Admin API instead of runningadc dump.ADC_IMAGEsupport in the e2e framework comes from fix: set the Gateway status reasons Gateway API 1.6 requires and make the conformance report honest apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2843.httpand its stream routes were rejected withcan not create a Stream Route to the HTTP Service. These upstreams now gettcp/udpunless a BackendTrafficPolicy already set an L4 scheme.<username>/credentials/<id>, which APISIX caps at 128 characters. The spec's consumer name produced a 133-character id, so the valid Consumer was rejected. The spec now uses a shorter name. Real syncs are not affected; only validation of very long usernames is.Validation: the image-loading and MQTT changes pass all 25 checks on apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907, which ran on ubuntu-26.04. The Makefile helper was also verified locally on Docker 29 (containerd store) and Docker 27 (overlay2) with kind v0.27.0.
