LlamaPReview — No blocking issues found
Safe to merge: the accessor now returns the documented '-' sentinel when no request utility exists (after init_non_web() or before any init) instead of raising AttributeError, while web-mode correlation and the JSON log schema are unchanged by construction.
2 non-blocking findings retained — highest: Unused io import in new test module; --exit-zero style run means it cannot fail the gate.

Finding details
P2 · Unused io import in new test module; --exit-zero style run means it cannot fail the gate.
tests/test_non_web_correlation.py
The added test module imports io and never references it; the same file uses json, logging, pytest and both helpers. Consequence is limited to lint noise: the blocking CI step selects only E9,F63,F7,F82, and the style run uses --exit-zero, so this cannot fail the gate and does not affect merge. Its status is nonblocking.
Owner action: Owner action (optional, any later test-touching PR): drop the io import.
Verification boundary: needs verification; scope: changed region.
Conceptual guidance (not a committable GitHub suggestion):
import json
import logging
P2 · README API note not added; behavior documented only in docstring and changelog.
review context
The behavior is documented twice inside the PR (accessor docstring: returns EMPTY_VALUE after init_non_web() or before any init; CHANGELOG Unreleased entry), but the fetched README slices expose only a "Get current correlation-id" table-of-contents entry and non-web/web usage examples, with no explicit non-web return-value contract. This is a documentation-completeness observation, not an observed defect: the acceptance criterion "follows the approved, documented contract" is satisfied by the in-code contract plus changelog, and no caller or output depends on the README text.
Owner action: Optional owner action: add one line under README section 2.3 stating the non-web return value.
Verification boundary: needs verification; scope: bounded reviewed context.
Material unknowns
- Exact pre-existing README section 2.3 body wording about non-web correlation support. Affects only whether the optional README note is worth doing, not whether the code change is correct; a different wording would not turn it into a blocker.
- Check: Optionally read README section 2.3 and decide whether to add the non-web return-value line.

json_logging.get_correlation_id() delegated to the request utility, which
init_non_web() never creates. Calling it after init_non_web(), or before any
init, raised AttributeError ('NoneType' object has no attribute
'get_correlation_id').
Non-web logging has no HTTP request, so there is no correlation ID to read.
The accessor now returns json_logging.EMPTY_VALUE in that case. Web-mode
behaviour is unchanged, including an explicitly passed request.
Fixes #126
Measured after this module: flask-request-logger was left with a handler and parent=None by the web-mode test that calls init_flask() and init_request_instrument(). An autouse fixture snapshots and restores the request loggers and werkzeug around every test, so the module no longer changes state other tests can see. Verified: 40/40 on Python 3.9-3.13, blocking flake8 clean, removing the non-web guard still fails 3 tests. Refs #126
Reported in review (flake8 F401). No behaviour change.

tests/test_non_web_correlation.py:15-41
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winRestore every mutated logger and handler formatter.
JSON-enabled initialization changes handlers on every registered logger. The fixture restores only selected logger attributes and handler lists. It does not restore each handler's formatter or newly registered logger entries. A later in-process test can therefore receive JSON formatting from a handler that previously used another formatter.
Snapshot and restore the complete logger registry, logger settings, and handler formatters, or isolate this module in a subprocess.

PR 2 —
fix: safely handle correlation ID lookup in non-web mode(Fixes #126)Branch
fix/126-non-web-correlation, commitb649242.Problem.
json_logging.get_correlation_id()delegates to_request_util, whichinit_non_web()never creates. Thecall raised
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_correlation_id'.Reproduced on master: the three accessor tests fail with that exact error, after
init_non_web()with JSON enabledand disabled, and before any init.
Change.
get_correlation_id()returnsEMPTY_VALUEwhen_request_util is None, and the docstring says so. Web-modebehaviour, including an explicit
request=, is unchanged.Tests.
tests/test_non_web_correlation.py(5 tests). Three fail on master and pass now. Two are controls: non-webJSON output keeps its schema with no
correlation_id, and web mode still honours an explicit request.Local results.
Compatibility. The only change is no longer raising in non-web mode. No output changes.
