perf(workers): encrypt and decrypt through WebCrypto on Workers (LAB-7135) - #271
On Cloudflare Workers, secure caches now encrypt and decrypt with AES-256-GCM through the runtime's crypto.subtle, which runs natively, instead of the software AES and GHASH in the wasm32 build of cachekit-core (wasm32 has no AES instructions). Key derivation (HKDF-SHA256), the key fingerprint, the tenant-id bounds and the ByteStorage envelope stay in wasm cachekit-core. Node keeps the NAPI bindings unchanged.
Ciphertexts stay byte-identical: same wire format, same AAD, same counter-nonce scheme.
src/workers/webcrypto.ts (new) implements the internal EncryptionBindings seam for Workers:
At init, deriveTenantKeys(masterKey, tenantId) checks the tenant bounds and yields the fingerprint, and its handle is freed (zeroized) at once. Each key's AES key comes from deriveKey(key, 'encryption', tenantId) and is imported as a non-extractable CryptoKey: ['encrypt', 'decrypt'] for the current key, ['decrypt'] for each previous key. Every wasm call runs before the first await.
Counter nonces as in cachekit-core: 8-byte big-endian instance id ‖ 4-byte big-endian counter from 0. Instance ids come from one BigInt counter per isolate, seeded once with 8 bytes from crypto.getRandomValues and wrapping mod 2^64. The counter value is reserved synchronously before any await, is never rolled back, and fails at 2^32−1 with the core's "Nonce counter exhausted" message.
The keyring loop as in core: current key first, then each previous key in order, same AAD each time. Only OperationError (authentication failure) moves to the next key.
The wasm binding's limits, checked before crypto.subtle is reached: plaintext ≤ 100 MiB, ciphertext ≤ 100 MiB + 1024 and ≥ 28 bytes, AAD ≤ 64 KiB.
EncryptionBindings methods may now return a Promise. EncryptionManagerCore awaits a derive before zero-filling the decoded key bytes, and awaits an encrypt or decrypt result only when it is a Promise, inside the existing error mapping. A plain value (NAPI) takes no extra microtask hop.
isHardwareAccelerated() returns null (unknown) on Workers: an isolate cannot see whether the runtime's WebCrypto uses AES instructions.
deriveKey in cachekit-core-wasm now takes the master key as a JS Uint8Array handle and returns the derived key as a new JS Uint8Array, both staged through Zeroizing. Before, the &[u8] argument and the Vec<u8> return each left a key copy in linear memory, freed unwiped. The JS signature is unchanged. build.sh now fails if the generated deriveKey glue stages bytes through linear memory.
Key material, before and after
Before, the derived tenant keys (and, during a rotation window, every previous master key) lived in wasm linear memory, a host-readable ArrayBuffer, until dispose().
After, the AES keys live only as non-extractable CryptoKeys. The wasm TenantKeys handle is freed before init resolves, every JS copy of derived key bytes is zero-filled in a finally (including when importKey rejects), and the decoded master-key bytes are zero-filled after the derive has settled. Copies that remain: HKDF's and the fingerprint hasher's working buffers on the wasm stack in linear memory, until later calls overwrite them (the same caveat the binding already documents for the key hash). A CryptoKey cannot be zeroized; dispose() drops it for the garbage collector. The master key itself stays in the JS heap as the configured hex string, as before and as on Node.
Tests
test/workers/webcrypto.workers.test.ts runs in workerd:
Byte parity: for every encryption.json vector, the WebCrypto path, steered to that vector's nonce, reproduces ciphertext_hex exactly. Every main, keyring and default-tenant vector decrypts. getKeyFingerprint() matches the main, default-tenant and keyring fingerprints.
Interop at 64 KiB and 1 MB in both directions with the wasm bindings.
Nonces: no repeat over 100,000 sequential encrypts; 10,000 concurrent encrypts give 10,000 distinct nonces; a failed crypto.subtle.encrypt still advances the counter; the nonce layout; consecutive instance ids across a seed of 2^64−1; one 8-byte seed per isolate; NonceExhaustedError at 2^32−1 and on the next encrypt, carrying the contract string.
Tenant ids of exactly 1,024 UTF-8 bytes derive; 1,025 bytes, including a multibyte id under 1,025 UTF-16 units, fail with EncryptionError.
Input limits rejected before crypto.subtle is called (spied); error mapping; keyring order, same AAD, terminal non-authentication errors, no attempt under 28 bytes, one derive and import per key across 10 decrypts.
Key material: extractable: false and the usages on every key; derived and master-key bytes zero-filled on success and when importKey rejects; the wasm handle freed before init resolves.
src/encryption/manager-core.test.ts adds the async seam over mock bindings: rejected encrypts map to NonceExhaustedError or EncryptionError, rejected decrypts to EncryptionError, and the master-key bytes stay intact until an async derive settles, then are wiped.
Mutation checks: moving the counter reservation after an await, giving previous keys encrypt usage, retrying on any error, skipping the handle free(), an off-by-one exhaustion check and skipping the zero-fill each fail at least one test.
Bench
pnpm --filter @cachekit-io/cachekit bench:workers-crypto (new, bench/workers-crypto/) times encrypt and decrypt per op through EncryptionManagerCore inside workerd, wasm against WebCrypto on the same build, at 100 B, 1 KB, 16 KB, 64 KB and 1 MB, interleaved with a no-op await baseline, an A/A row and a seeded paired bootstrap CI. WebCrypto clears the A/A floor at every size for both operations. At 100 B encrypt the margin is small: WebCrypto's fixed per-call cost is close to the wasm core's whole 100 B seal, and the paired CI there includes zero on some runs.
bench:ir --compare against the merge-base build: napi-encrypted-64kb +0.01%, secure-set-get +0.04% and the wasm-AES baseline workloads ≤ 0.19%. napi-encrypted reads +1.15% Ir/op, over the compare's 1% warn line and under its 2% fail line. A callgrind self-cost split of that window puts about +0.3% in JIT code and builtins (the async seam), and the rest in glibc malloc free-list work with the same number of malloc calls (allocator state, not added allocations). The wasm-encrypted workloads are relabelled as the wasm-AES baseline; Workers no longer runs that path for AES.
New exports
MAX_PLAINTEXT_SIZE and MAX_CIPHERTEXT_SIZE (the bindings' input limits) join MAX_AAD_SIZE as package exports, through the existing constants.ts re-export. A test pins all three to both native bindings' lib.rs.
Docs
packages/cachekit/README.md: the Workers crypto description, the key-material semantics and the isHardwareAccelerated() paragraph.
packages/cachekit-core-wasm/README.md and index.d.ts: deriveKey's key handling.
The docs site's Workers quickstart and the protocol feature-matrix footnote are updated in companion PRs.
Workers secure caches encrypt and decrypt through crypto.subtle on keys
that wasm cachekit-core derives. Key derivation, the key fingerprint, the
tenant-id bounds and the ByteStorage envelope stay in the wasm core.
- EncryptionBindings methods may return a Promise; the manager awaits
them inside its error mapping and wipes key bytes after the derive
settles. The NAPI bindings stay synchronous.
- src/workers/webcrypto.ts reproduces the core's counter nonces
(instance id || counter, reserved before any await, exhausted at
2^32-1), the keyring decrypt loop and the binding's input limits.
- deriveKey takes and returns JS Uint8Arrays, so no key bytes are left
in linear memory unwiped; build.sh checks the generated glue.
- Workers tests pin byte parity with the protocol vectors, wasm interop
at 64 KiB and 1 MB, nonce uniqueness under concurrency, error mapping,
the keyring order and key handling. bench/workers-crypto adds an
interleaved A/B harness inside workerd.
An await inside the try of encrypt and decrypt slowed every synchronous
NAPI call, even when not taken. The rejection of an asynchronous
binding is now mapped by a chained catch, and the functions keep their
single await.

### [1/2] packages/cachekit/bench/workers-crypto/ab.bench-workers.ts:96
Issue identified during code review:
Unsafe type assertion in packages/cachekit/bench/workers-crypto/ab.bench-workers.ts: the `as Arm` cast on the returned object literal skips type checking, which violates the team rule 'Avoid unsafe type assertions'. If `Arm` gains a required field or a property such as `us` is misspelled, the literal still compiles and the missing value shows up as `undefined` at runtime. Fix: use proper type guards, or annotate the value as `Arm` instead of asserting it. The same pattern appears in `packages/cachekit/src/encryption/manager-core.test.ts:421, 466`, `packages/cachekit/src/workers/webcrypto.ts:141, 143, 162, 163, 166, 224, 246, 248`, and `packages/cachekit/test/workers/webcrypto.workers.test.ts:41, 133, 155, 362, 387, 422, 563`.

### [2/2] packages/cachekit/bench/workers-crypto/ab.bench-workers.ts:101
Issue identified during code review:
Lost type checking in packages/cachekit/bench/workers-crypto/ab.bench-workers.ts: `results` is declared as `Record<string, unknown>[]`, although the `results.push(...)` call on line 127 fully determines its shape. A misspelled key or a wrong field type in a pushed row compiles without error and corrupts the benchmark output. Fix: declare `interface Result { size: number; op: 'encrypt' | 'decrypt'; reps: number; a_us: number; b_us: number; aa_us: number; floor: number; gain: number; pass: boolean }` and type the array as `Result[]`.

…B bench
The instance id's 8 bytes are encoded once per manager, and the counter
is written byte by byte. The workerd A/B harness now runs 60 reps at
1 KB and below and reports a seeded paired bootstrap 95% CI per row.
- deriveKey checks the master key's length before copying it into
linear memory, which never shrinks.
- The README separates Node's zeroize-on-dispose from Workers'
non-extractable keys.
- The WebCrypto tests reset the instance-id seed in afterEach.
- The A/B harness types its arms and result rows.
… limits
- Comments on init, encrypt, decrypt and dispose no longer promise
zeroization on Workers: CryptoKeys are dropped for the GC, and their
derived bytes are wiped at init.
- The plaintext and ciphertext limits move to constants.ts beside
MAX_AAD_SIZE, and a test pins all three to both native bindings.
- The nonce counter is private, with an internal test setter.
- The bench drops its unused JSON dump; the tests import the shared hex
helpers.
- deriveKey's docs say HKDF's stack buffers persist in linear memory.
- The Node keyring is zeroized when the GC finalizes the handle after
dispose, not on dispose itself.
- The derive docstring names the invariant the early wipe rests on:
importKey copies keyData before it returns.
- close() comments say key release; MAX_AAD_SIZE is enforced by, not
mirrored in, the WebCrypto adapter.
