fix(agent-device): find an npm-installed agent-device on Windows - #1055
agent-device installed with npm is found on Windows.
PATH is split on ;.
No file needs an execute bit.
npm's agent-device.cmd shim stands in for the package's own bin file. That holds for a global install, a local node_modules\.bin, a configured name ending in .cmd, and a configured path to the shim.
The supervisor gets the host platform through WorkerContext.hostPlatform, set in the daemon's composition root, rather than reading process.platform itself.
Verified on Windows 11 with an npm-installed agent-device. A Windows-only test resolves a local install from a backslash PATH entry on the real filesystem.
Fix-check at a1e07a4 (merge of main, conflict in src/agent-device/host/install.ts): main's pnpm shim lookup and this PR's .cmd shim lookup both kept; verified by the coordinator. Not re-run on Windows: the delivery Mac cannot test Windows and CI has no Windows runner, so the Windows-only test ran only on the author's Windows 11 machine, before this merge.

`findAgentDevice` split PATH on `:`, wanted an execute bit and took the
command's real path as a symlink into the package. On Windows PATH is
`;`-separated with `C:` drives, Node reports every file as 0o666, and
npm installs a `.cmd` shim beside `node_modules/agent-device` rather
than a symlink, so a worker there always reported "agent-device not
found: \"agent-device\" is not on PATH".
On Windows the lookup now splits on `;`, treats any file as runnable,
and takes `<dir>/agent-device.cmd` to mean the package beside it, using
that package's own `bin` file as the real path (`node <bin> --version`
runs it; the package root is above it). A configured path may use `\`.
PATH is read case-insensitively, since Windows names it `Path` and a
copy of `process.env` loses its case-insensitive lookup.

Walkthrough
Executable lookup now uses platform-specific path parsing and file checks. On Windows, lookup can resolve npm .cmd shims through package bin metadata. The supervisor retrieves PATH without depending on environment-key casing and passes the host platform to lookup. The daemon sets the host platform from process.platform. Tests cover Windows and Linux lookup cases.
Lookup uses platform-specific path separators and executable checks. Windows lookup resolves npm .cmd shims through package bin metadata. The supervisor reads PATH case-insensitively. Tests cover Windows shim resolution and Linux lookup behavior.
Host platform context src/modules/types.ts, src/daemon/main.ts, src/agent-device/worker.ts, test setup files
WorkerContext and AgentDeviceSupervisorOptions require a host platform. The daemon sets it from process.platform, and the worker passes it to supervisors.

Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to a1e07
Some Windows configurations may still fail to discover a valid installation. These bounded lookup issues warrant owner awareness or follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a1e07
The change enables Windows executable discovery without introducing shell execution or an explicit privilege transition. No introduced vulnerability was established, but Windows filesystem ownership and access-control assumptions remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — If an attacker can control the selected installation, the version probe executes its JavaScript before readiness, and the daemon child receives the host environment after scoped filtering. The relevant conditional impact is execution with the host account's privileges and accessible credentials or devices, not merely incorrect lookup. No evidence establishes that an untrusted tenant or lower-privileged user can modify the selected files.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Package-name and entry checks identify an expected package layout, not an authenticated publisher. Windows bin metadata can redirect resolution outside its initial package directory, but arbitrary target selection already existed through configured paths, symlinks, and pnpm shim metadata. Without evidence of a separately controlled metadata boundary, this is an executable-installation trust assumption rather than an established new authorization bypass.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Stale-process recovery does not trust a stored PID alone. It checks the command-line home and role markers, checks the persisted entry when available, refuses signalling when identity is unknown, and rechecks identity before escalation. These controls remain on the newly reachable Windows startup path.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make the Windows deployment trust requirement explicit: selected npm installations and daemon state must not be writable by less-trusted accounts. Where shared or elevated operation is supported, validate Windows ownership and ACLs rather than treating Unix mode requests as equivalent protection. This is hardening guidance, not a verified exploit condition.

Three npm layouts were reported as not-found or not-agent-device:
- a local install, whose shim sits in node_modules/.bin with the
package beside .bin rather than under it;
- a configured command name that already ends in .cmd, which was
looked up as agent-device.cmd.cmd;
- a configured path to the shim itself, which was taken as the
program rather than resolved to the package's bin.
`locate` is split into small helpers, which also brings it back
under Fallow's complexity limit.

Normalize the Windows command name before the bin lookup.
If the configured command is AGENT-DEVICE, a typical case-insensitive Windows filesystem can locate AGENT-DEVICE.cmd. The package metadata still uses the case-sensitive key "agent-device". packageBin then returns undefined, and discovery reports not-found. Normalize the name used for the package root and bin key, and add an uppercase-command test. (nodejs.org)

Review comment at @src/agent-device/host/install.ts at line 39:
Normalize the command name to lowercase in the install discovery flow before
using it for the package root and `packageBin` lookup, so uppercase configured
commands match the case-sensitive package metadata key; add a test confirming
`AGENT-DEVICE` is discovered successfully.
Keep direct-file lookup for Windows PATH entries.

Keep direct-file lookup for Windows PATH entries.
If PATH contains the package’s bin directory and the configured command is agent-device.mjs, this branch checks only for agent-device.mjs.cmd. It reports not-found even though the direct bin file is valid; the explicit-path test already accepts that file on Windows. After shim lookup, check a non-.cmd command as a direct file with Windows file rules. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

`findAgentDevice` read `process.platform` when no platform was passed,
and the supervisor passed none, so on a Windows host the supervisor's
tests (POSIX PATH and modes) took the Windows lookup and failed. The
platform is now injected like `nodePath` and `nodeVersion`: a
`hostPlatform` on `WorkerContext`, set from `process.platform` in the
daemon's composition root, passed through the supervisor; the default
is gone. Test harnesses fix it to "linux".
Also corrects the install comment: a read-only file reports 0o444.

Handle case-insensitive Windows bin keys.
On Windows, AGENT-DEVICE or AGENT-DEVICE.CMD can resolve the lowercase agent-device.cmd shim. packageBin then indexes an object-form bin with the original name. For { "agent-device": "..." }, the lookup returns undefined, so a valid installation is reported as not-found.
Match the object key case-insensitively or normalize the command name before the shim and bin lookups. Add a regression test for an uppercase command name.
