ADR 0064 for #1282, at Proposed. A tunnel names a device port, as today, or an emulator port: a port the emulator program opens on the worker, chosen by name, and only adb for now. On an iOS simulator a forward reaches the worker's loopback only when the listening process belongs to the lease's simulator, and a reverse listens on exactly the device port, first tunnel wins. The adb emulator port lets the caller's own adb, and so Android Studio, attach to the remote emulator; simlock tunnel emulator adb runs adb connect for it. It narrows ADR 0054 for iOS, ADR 0001's "the user's adb cannot see a Simlock emulator" for a holder's own tunnel, and ADR 0005's port-forwarding non-goal further. A spike on real devices on 2026-11-04 backs every device claim in its Context.

This PR is the bottom of #1282's stack and merges with the feature's last task.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds ADR 0064, an accepted, not-yet-implemented proposal for reaching iOS simulator ports and an emulator’s ADB port through tunnels. It defines target types, connection rules, CLI behavior, and compatibility with older workers. The ADR index and related decisions identify the sections and non-goals that ADR 0064 narrows.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0001-simlock-owned-device-roots.md: The Status text adds an ADR 0064 qualification: §4’s “cannot see” statement is narrowed for a holder’s own adb access through a tunnel.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0005-gateway-and-worker-modes.md: The status now cites ADR 0064 as further narrowing the port-forwarding non-goal.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0054-a-lease-holder-tunnels-device-ports-to-its-own-machine.md: The status adds a note that ADR 0064 narrows §2, §5, §6, and the iOS consequence; the accepted status remains.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0054-a-lease-holder-tunnels-device-ports-to-its-own-machine.md: The iOS exclusion now points to ADR 0064 for coverage; the explanation that simulator reverse uses a worker port shared by leases remains.

Use a separate refusal for non-conflict bind failures.

ADR 0064 maps permission, resource, address-family, and other bind failures to TUNNEL_PORT_IN_USE, which can mislead users into changing a port when the port is not in use. ADR 0054 does not define an existing generic worker-failure code. Define one, and reserve TUNNEL_PORT_IN_USE for address-in-use failures.

Add the narrowed ADR 0054 Consequences statement to the index entry.

ADR 0064 covers iOS simulator ports. ADR 0054's Consequences section states that iOS simulators are not covered. The index entry lists only 0054 §2, §5, and §6, so it omits this narrowed statement.

Information disclosure

Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-367, Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition

The forward design checks that a process carrying SIMULATOR_UDID listens on the device port, then connects to it. If the simulator stops and another local process binds that port before connect, the worker forwards caller bytes to that process. The per-connection check does not close this window, and the ADR does not state the race or accept it.

Define one of these controls in the ADR:

  • An atomic check that binds the owner lookup to the connection, so the listener that passed the check is the listener that receives the connection.
  • A check of the connected socket's owning process before the worker sends any caller data.
  • An explicit statement that this residual race is accepted, with the local-process attacker scope it covers.

Review findings, round 1 (ADR-only, spec lens, Opus/high) at bc5a512

  • R1 (blocking) ADR 0064 §2 line ~62: an iOS forward connects at an address a SIMULATOR_UDID process listens on. Undecided when the simulator app holds [::]:p and another process binds 127.0.0.1:p (the spike shows this coexists): the worker's connect then reaches the other process, contradicting "never reaches the daemon ... or another lease's app".
  • R2 (blocking) §5 (line ~91): "no adb server on the worker sees a Simlock emulator" is false; Simlock's own adb server on the worker sees every one (ADR 0001 §4 speaks of the user's adb server).
  • R3 (blocking) docs/internal/adr/README.md: rows (and Status lines) of 0054, 0001 and 0005 do not point at 0064; 0054 still says iOS simulators are not covered. Precedent: 0061 updated the 0001 row.

Assessment: complete. Rerun: round 2 after fixes.

Refuse reserved Android tunnel ports for iOS reverse.

An iOS reverse on port 47000 can pass the listener checks even when a stale phone reverse rule points to that port. The phone can then send traffic to the new holder’s service. ADR 0054 §6 requires that such ports remain reserved.

Explicitly refuse iOS reverse ports in 47000–47999, including when no listener is present.
