## [Unreleased]

### Added

- The Desktop Tools app asks once per agent, such as Claude Code or a terminal app, "Allow *name* to control this Mac?", and refuses every request from an agent you haven't allowed with `CALLER_NOT_APPROVED`, listings and captures included, without making it wait. Agents are recognized by their validated signature, or by their path when unsigned, and **Approved Agents** in the menu revokes, allows or forgets each one. After updating, each agent you use is asked about once. Recent Activity names the agent, such as `claude-code`, instead of `node`. Embedding apps opt in with `desktop_tools_set_caller_handler`. ([#120](https://github.com/githubnext/desktop-tools/pull/120))

### Changed

- Agent input aimed at any Desktop Tools process, including another build of it, or sent while one of its prompts or menus is open, is refused with `SELF_TARGET_REFUSED`, so only the user can answer its prompts or choose Pause All Input. Agents can still observe them. ([#120](https://github.com/githubnext/desktop-tools/pull/120))

Download the notarized DMG from the [latest release](https://github.com/githubnext/desktop-tools/releases/latest), drag **Desktop Tools** to Applications, and open it. Grant each permission from its menu.

Anything running as the user can use those grants while the app serves, so grant them only on machines where that is acceptable, and quit the app when it isn't needed.
Anything running as the user could use those grants, so the app asks before serving each agent (see [approved agents](#approved-agents)). Grant them only on machines where that is acceptable, and quit the app when it isn't needed.

## Approved agents

The first time an agent calls, the app asks **Allow *name* to control this Mac?**, naming who signed it and where it runs from, with **Allow** and **Don't Allow**. Until you answer, and after Don't Allow, every request from that agent is refused with `CALLER_NOT_APPROVED`, listings and screen captures included; the agent is told to ask you, and is never left waiting. The answer is remembered in `callers.json` in the state folder (`~/.local/state/desktop-tools`), readable only by you, and the app asks about each agent once. Updating from 0.13.1 or earlier, each agent you use is asked about once.

The agent is the program that ran the MCP server, skipping `node`, `npx` and shells: Claude Code is `claude-code`, and a server run from a terminal is that terminal app. Signed programs are recognized by their signature, so an update keeps its approval; unsigned ones by their path. **Approved Agents** in the menu lists every agent with who signed it and its path: revoke an allowed one, allow one you refused or forget it so it's asked about again, or answer one still waiting.

The app's own prompts, menus and windows answer only to you. Agent input aimed at any Desktop Tools process, including the app, its client and another build of it, is refused with `SELF_TARGET_REFUSED`, and so is every agent input while one of its prompts or menus is open. Agents can still observe them.

**Recent Activity** in the menu lists the last 5 operations agents ran. **All Activity** holds the last 20. Each line names:
- the operation, such as Click, Key, Type, Capture or Read clipboard;
- the target app and window title;
- the agent (`DESKTOP_TOOLS_AGENT`, or the name of the process that ran the client, such as `node` for the MCP server) and that process's pid;
- the agent, as named under [Approved agents](#approved-agents), and its pid;
- the time;
- the outcome: completed, unknown, refused, or paused for a request refused because input was paused.

Identical operations in a row fold into one line with a count. Every desktop change is listed, and so are screen captures and clipboard reads. Turning on an app's web accessibility for a read is listed once per launch of that app. Listings and snapshot bookkeeping are not. Only the operation and its target are kept, never typed text, clipboard contents or values. The list lives in memory and is gone when the app quits.

**Pause All Input** stops agents from changing anything until you turn it off again. While paused, the app refuses every click, key, typing, scroll, drag, menu command, app or window change, dialog action and clipboard write before it is sent. The refusal tells the agent to ask you to resume. Agents can still observe: listings, the accessibility tree, screen captures and clipboard reads keep working. So does turning on a Chromium or Electron app's web accessibility before a read, since it only lets the app's web content be read and sends no input (see [tools](tools.md#input)). The menu bar icon becomes a pause sign while input is paused. Only this menu item changes it; no client can pause or resume. Pausing isn't saved, so the app starts resumed.

macOS grants Accessibility, Screen Recording, and event synthesis to the embedding app. Each embedding app needs its own grants on each machine. Clients must be signed by the host's team with the exact allowlisted identifier, and the client verifies the host's team. The agent cursor and window outline draw click-through panels from the GUI process, so turn them on only from an app with a running AppKit main loop. The outline's label names the agent from `DESKTOP_TOOLS_AGENT` in the requesting client's environment, which `createDesktop` sets from its `agent` option; without it the label says "Agent". For agents outside an embedding app, use the [Desktop Tools app](app.md).

The caller is the client's nearest ancestor that isn't `node`, `npx`, `npm`, a shell, `login` or `env`, such as Claude Code or the terminal app an agent runs in. Its key is the team ID and signing identifier of its running code when that signature validates, so an update that moves it keeps its approval; otherwise it is its path, plus its identifier when it has one. Its name is its app's name, else the last part of a team-signed identifier (`claude-code`), else its file name. The process can't choose either one through its arguments or environment.

- The Chromium checks (#107, #110 and #111) each launch their own Chrome on the fixture page, isolated from the user's: a new temporary profile (`--user-data-dir`), with `--no-first-run` and `--no-default-browser-check`. They run alongside a Chrome the user already has open, never touch its windows, and quit only the process they started before deleting its profile, so each check starts with web accessibility off. They are skipped when Google Chrome isn't in `/Applications` or `~/Applications`.
- The Finder paste checks (#114) paste the fixtures' own files into the fixture folder, and the folder goes when the fixtures do.
- Clipboard checks run only when the clipboard holds plain text, and that text is written back at the end. The input-source check selects another enabled keyboard layout, then the original again.
- The caller checks (#120) list the windows of a running Desktop Tools and ask to activate it, which must be refused. They then run a second MCP server under `/usr/bin/perl`, which the app asks you about once, and while that prompt is open check that input to a fixture window is refused too. The harness waits up to two minutes for you to answer; choose **Don't Allow**, and later runs only check that perl is still refused. If you allowed perl, the check is skipped until you choose Forget for it under Approved Agents. They are skipped on a host that doesn't approve callers.
- Modifier clicks (#77) and `desktop_system_key` (#89) use the real keyboard and pointer, as they always do; nothing else needs the foreground.
