Use pytap3 to provide cross-platform IP tunnelling - #1001
After publishing pytap3 package on PyPI (fork of pytap2 archived project) I was able to use tunnelling capabilities on Linux, macOS and Windows.
Tunnel functionality is now cross-platform.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Tunnel support and its command-line options are available across platforms, including non-Linux systems. Starting a tunnel still requires a local node, and you can optionally configure a subnet.
Updates
The optional tunnel dependency is now pytap3 instead of pytap2. Install the updated optional dependency to use tunnel support. The tunnel setup continues to use the configured MTU.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The optional tunnel dependency changes from pytap2 to pytap3. The CLI exposes tunnel options on all platforms. Tunnel startup and its persistent wait loop no longer check whether the runtime platform is Linux.
The optional dependency and TapDevice import change to pytap3. Tunnel no longer rejects non-Linux systems. Comments and tests identify pytap3 as the optional dependency. The configured MTU remains 200; a comment notes Windows prefers at least 576 bytes.
CLI tunnel enablement meshtastic/__main__.py
The CLI registers --tunnel and --subnet on all platforms. Tunnel startup and the persistent wait condition now use args.tunnel without a Linux check.
This test still requires TunnelError when platform.system() is not Linux. The constructor no longer rejects that platform, so the assertion fails when the tunnel test runs with pytap3 installed. Replace it with a test of the supported platform behavior, and mock the TUN device so the test does not require OS privileges.

Update test_Tunnel_on_non_linux_system to verify the supported non-Linux
constructor behavior instead of expecting TunnelError, and mock the TUN device

Use a Windows-compatible MTU before enabling the tunnel.
On Windows, pytap3 passes this mtu=200 value to netsh when Tunnel configures the interface. Windows requires an IPv4 interface MTU of at least 576 bytes. The configuration therefore fails, and --tunnel cannot start on Windows. Use a supported interface MTU and handle packets that exceed the mesh packet limit. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the MTU passed to self.tun.ifconfig to a Windows-supported IPv4 value of
at least 576 bytes, and ensure the tunnel’s packet handling rejects or otherwise
safely handles packets larger than the mesh packet limit.

Keep the macOS tunnel path disabled until pytap3 uses an interface route.
pytap3 3.0.0 builds route -n add -net <network> <local IP>. macOS treats the final argument as a gateway. A direct utun route requires -interface <utunN>. pytap3’s own test expects that form. Because this PR removes the Linux guard, --tunnel can reach this path on macOS. A nonzero route command becomes an uncaught TapDeviceError during Tunnel initialization.
The command is not guaranteed to fail on every macOS route table, so this is not a deterministic outage claim. Restore the platform guard until the dependency is corrected, or use a pytap3 release that emits the tested interface form.

Keep the TapDevice tunnel path Linux-only until pytap3 uses the required
interface route: gate the --tunnel option, Tunnel initialization, and any
tunnel-dependent connection condition on the platform. On macOS, do not expose
or activate this path.

Do not enter the wait loop when --noproto suppresses tunnel startup.
With --tunnel --noproto, onConnected() skips tunnel.Tunnel(...), but the later condition still enters the unbounded wait loop through both flags. The combination is newly reachable on non-Linux platforms because tunnel arguments are now registered on every platform.
Suggested fix
- args.noproto+ (args.noproto and not args.tunnel)
or args.reply
- or args.tunnel+ (args.tunnel and not client.noProto)
or args.listen

Update the wait-loop condition in the main flow so `--tunnel --noproto` does not
enter the unbounded wait when `onConnected()` skips tunnel startup; preserve
waiting for other valid modes, including tunnels that actually start.
