fix: SSA finalizer add no longer re-creates a deleted primary resource - #3660
When the primary resource is patched with server-side apply (the default, useSSAToPatchPrimaryResource()) and the reconciler uses a finalizer, the dispatcher adds the finalizer with ResourceOperations#addFinalizerWithSSA. That method applies a fresh object with only name, namespace and the finalizer.
A server-side apply creates the object if it doesn't exist. So if the resource is deleted before its first reconciliation (it has no finalizer yet, so it disappears immediately), the queued finalizer add re-creates it as a stub. The stub has no spec and no owner references, and nothing ever deletes it.
Fix
The finalizer apply now includes the cached resource's metadata.uid. With a UID in the body, the API server refuses to create the object:
Situation
API server response
What happens
Resource no longer exists
409 Conflict (uid mismatch ... no existing object was found)
Re-fetch finds nothing; nothing is applied and null is returned
Resource deleted and re-created under the same name
422 (UID is immutable)
Re-fetch returns the new object; the finalizer is applied with its UID
Same resource
Normal apply
Finalizer added
Kubernetes covers the missing-object case in its own integration test (TestCreateOnApplyFailsWithUID), and the storage-version-migrator controller uses the same approach to stop apply from creating objects.
Why not optimistic locking
resourceVersion doesn't prevent the re-create. On the create path of an apply, the API server clears it without checking it.
It isn't needed for correctness either.metadata.finalizers is a set for server-side apply, so the apply only adds this finalizer and leaves concurrent changes alone.
It would only cause extra conflicts. Every concurrent change to the resource would turn into a 409 and a retry.
Other changes
Shared retry loop: the retry loop of conflictRetryingPatchPrimary, the JSON Patch finalizer path, is moved into a private helper that both paths use. The JSON Patch path behaves as before.
Retries:addFinalizerWithSSA retries on 409 and 422, up to DEFAULT_MAX_RETRY, re-fetching the resource before each attempt.
Skips: like addFinalizer, it now skips resources that already have the finalizer or are marked for deletion.
Return value: it returns null if the resource is gone. The non-SSA path already does this, and the dispatcher handles it.
Docs:reconciler.md notes that the SSA finalizer add doesn't re-create a deleted resource.
Tests
Unit tests in ResourceOperationsTest:
the apply carries the UID and no resource version;
a deleted resource returns null after a single attempt;
a 422 is retried with the re-created resource's UID;
nothing is sent when the finalizer is already present.
API server tests in AddFinalizerWithSSAIntegrationTest, using kube-api-test (a real API server, no cluster needed). Only the Context and event source plumbing are mocked; the apply and the re-fetch go to the API server. The cases:
the finalizer is added to an existing resource;
a deleted resource is not re-created;
the finalizer lands on a resource re-created under the same name;
a stale cached copy still works.
Not in this PR
PrimaryUpdateAndCacheUtils#addFinalizerWithSSA builds the same UID-less apply, so it has the same re-create problem. The dispatcher doesn't use it.
Finalizer updates now retry conflicts and avoid recreating resources that were deleted or marked for deletion. If a resource disappears before the finalizer is added, the operation returns no resource.
Retried updates use the latest resource identity, helping ensure a recreated resource is handled correctly without overwriting its data.
Documentation
Clarified that finalizer updates include the resource identity and are skipped if the resource is deleted before the update.

Walkthrough
ResourceOperations now retries SSA finalizer applies after HTTP 409 or 422 responses. It checks the latest resource before each attempt and includes the resource UID in the apply payload. Tests cover missing, recreated, deleting, and already-finalized resources.
Primary-resource patch retries now use a private helper that accepts retryable HTTP status codes. The helper retains the retry limit and refetches the resource between attempts.
SSA finalizer checks and retries operator-framework-core/src/main/java/io/javaoperatorsdk/operator/api/reconciler/ResourceOperations.java, operator-framework-core/src/test/java/io/javaoperatorsdk/operator/api/reconciler/ResourceOperationsTest.java, operator-framework-core/src/test/java/io/javaoperatorsdk/operator/api/reconciler/AddFinalizerWithSSAIntegrationIT.java, docs/content/en/docs/documentation/reconciler.md
The finalizer path checks the latest resource before applying, skips the apply if the resource is absent, deleting, or already finalized, and includes the resource UID in the apply payload. Unit and API-server integration tests cover retries, missing and recreated resources, and preservation of resource data. The documentation describes the UID and missing-resource behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #3649 requires that the SSA finalizer add must not re-create a deleted primary resource. The whole-PR diff of ResourceOperations.java (merge base to head) shows the following. finalizerApplyFor sets metadata.uid from the cached resource, so the apply carries the UID. addFinalizerWithSSA runs through the shared conflictRetrying helper. Before each attempt, the helper re-fetches the primary resource. If the re-fetched resource is null, the pre-condition returns false, nothing is applied, and null is returned. This satisfies the issue expectation that nothing is created. If the resource is already marked for deletion or already has the finalizer, the method returns the resource unchanged without applying. On 409 or 422, the apply is retried up to DEFAULT_MAX_RETRY. The UID rules in the API server cause these codes, so the apply does not create the object. AddFinalizerWithSSAIntegrationIT covers the existing, deleted, re-created, and stale-cache cases. Limits: the integration test was not executed in this review, and the 409 and 422 server responses rely on API server behavior that was not run here. The downstream handling of a null return in ReconciliationDispatcher was not inspected in this review. The PR explicitly excludes PrimaryUpdateAndCacheUtils#addFinalizerWithSSA and other SSA primary writes, and the issue scope is the dispatcher finalizer-add path, so those exclusions do not fail this check.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All production changes relate to #3649 or support its implementation. The conflictRetrying helper extracts the existing JSON Patch retry loop. The retry predicate for conflictRetryingPatchPrimary remains HTTP 409 or 422, so JSON Patch behavior is unchanged. The SSA path reuses the helper, which justifies the refactor. The addFinalizerWithSSA Javadoc and reconciler.md describe the UID, retry, and null outcomes. The debug-log block now reads the primary resource only when debug logging is enabled. This is a minor change tied to the edited method. The tests in ResourceOperationsTest and AddFinalizerWithSSAIntegrationIT cover the changed SSA path. No unrelated production behavior was found in the inspected diff.

Use a non-creating write to add the finalizer.
If the primary resource is deleted after the precondition check but before this SSA write, the apply can create a resource with the same name. The resourceVersion does not make SSA an update-only operation. The re-fetch protects only attempts that first fail with a retryable conflict. Use a non-creating patch with an identity precondition, or otherwise make the write fail when the original resource is gone. This is the deletion race that issue #3649 requires the change to prevent. (kubernetes.io)
As per the PR objectives, “adding a finalizer via SSA” must not recreate a primary resource deleted before its first reconciliation.

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago; * Fix #8118: bump knative.dev/eventing-github from 0.49.1 to 0.50.0 ... * Fix #7955: (java-generator) Malicious CRD schema values can no longer inject executable code into the generated Java sources. ... * Fix #8028: (openshift-model, kube-api-test) No package is shipped by two artifacts anymore, so each pair can be placed on the JPMS module path together. `openshift-model` no longer bundles the `io.fabric8.openshift.api.model.config.*` classes that `openshift-model-config` owns (its `Export-Package` wildcard inlined them from that dependency); they still reach consumers through it. ... * Fix #8028: (kube-api-test) `Fabric8ClientInjectionHandler` moved to `io.fabric8.kubeapitest.junit.inject`.
Deferring the upgrade let the request end event be processed first, so `HttpServerRequest#toWebSocket()` intermittently threw `IllegalStateException: Request has already been read` and the upgrade was lost (surfacing as flaky `exec`/`attach` mock-server tests). Upgrade requests carry no body, so they are detected via the `Upgrade` header and upgraded before the request is read; the asynchronous path is unchanged for regular HTTP requests
* Fix #7955: (java-generator) Malicious CRD schema values can no longer inject executable code into the generated Java sources. Schema-controlled values (enum values, CRD group/version/names, property names, descriptions and defaults) are emitted as fully escaped Java string literals, so a value carrying a Unicode-escaped quote cannot break out of its literal once `javac` decodes it. As a defense in depth, each generated class is also re-parsed and structurally validated before it is written (with Java Unicode escape preprocessing enabled to match `javac`), aborting generation on any residual structural mismatch
`Fabric8ClientInjectionHandler` moved to `io.fabric8.kubeapitest.junit.inject`
* `scheduling.k8s.io/v1alpha2` (entire API version, 28 types) → use `v1alpha3` or `v1beta1`
* Fix #7752: `VolumeMount` constructor signature changed (Kubernetes v1.37.0 added `bindMountOptions` field). The canonical constructor now takes `bindMountOptions` (List) as its first parameter. Builder usage (`new VolumeMountBuilder().with...()`) is unaffected
* Fix #8033: gateway-api model `v1.SessionPersistence` no longer exposes `idleTimeout` (removed upstream in gateway-api v1.6.0). Besides the field, this removes `getIdleTimeout()`/`setIdleTimeout()`, collapses the canonical constructor from five arguments to four, and drops `SessionPersistenceFluent.withIdleTimeout()`/`getIdleTimeout()`/`hasIdleTimeout()`, so the builder form (`withNewSessionPersistence().withIdleTimeout(...)`) no longer compiles. There is no runtime data loss: the class keeps its `@JsonAnyGetter`/`@JsonAnySetter`, and both the fluent and the builder carry `additionalProperties` through, so JSON or YAML still containing `idleTimeout` continues to deserialize and re-serialize intact
* Fix #8028: (kube-api-test) `Fabric8ClientInjectionHandler` moved to `io.fabric8.kubeapitest.junit.inject`. It is resolved through `ServiceLoader`, so only code naming the class directly is affected
* Fix #8028: (openshift-model) The bundle no longer exports or contains `io.fabric8.openshift.api.model.config.*`. Maven consumers are unaffected (`openshift-model-config` is a compile dependency), but OSGi deployments importing those packages must install the `openshift-model-config` bundle, which the `openshift-client` Karaf feature already does

Name this integration test AddFinalizerWithSSAIT.
@EnableKubeAPIServer makes this a real API-server integration test. The default Surefire run selects *Test.java, while the integration-tests profile selects *IT.java and excludes *Test.java. Rename the class and file to end in IT.

A Server-Side Apply creates the object when it is missing, so adding the
finalizer with SSA to a primary resource that was deleted before its
first reconciliation brought it back as a stub holding only the
finalizer.
The finalizer apply now carries the cached resource's UID and resource
version. With the UID set, the API server rejects the apply of a missing
object with a conflict instead of creating it; the resource version adds
optimistic locking. On conflict the resource is re-fetched and the apply
retried, sharing the retry loop of the JSON Patch finalizer path; if the
resource is gone, nothing is applied.
Fixes#3649
Drop the UID from the finalizer apply and keep only the resource version,
so the apply uses optimistic locking: on conflict the resource is
re-fetched and the apply retried, and nothing is applied if the
re-fetched resource is gone.
Without the UID, a Server-Side Apply of a resource that is already
deleted can still create it, so this no longer addresses #3649 on its
own.
…imistic locking
Send the cached resource's UID instead of its resource version with the
finalizer apply. The API server then rejects the apply with a conflict
(409) if the resource no longer exists, instead of re-creating it, and
with unprocessable content (422) if it was re-created under the same
name. Both are retried after re-fetching the resource; if it is gone,
nothing is applied.
No optimistic locking is needed: finalizers are a set for Server-Side
Apply, so the apply only adds this finalizer and leaves concurrent
changes intact.
Fixes#3649
Uses kube-api-test to check that adding the finalizer with Server-Side
Apply does not re-create a deleted resource, adds it to a resource
re-created under the same name, and works from a stale cached copy.

Fixes #3649
Problem
When the primary resource is patched with server-side apply (the default,
useSSAToPatchPrimaryResource()) and the reconciler uses a finalizer, the dispatcher adds the finalizer withResourceOperations#addFinalizerWithSSA. That method applies a fresh object with only name, namespace and the finalizer.A server-side apply creates the object if it doesn't exist. So if the resource is deleted before its first reconciliation (it has no finalizer yet, so it disappears immediately), the queued finalizer add re-creates it as a stub. The stub has no spec and no owner references, and nothing ever deletes it.
Fix
The finalizer apply now includes the cached resource's
metadata.uid. With a UID in the body, the API server refuses to create the object:uid mismatch ... no existing object was found)nullis returnedKubernetes covers the missing-object case in its own integration test (
TestCreateOnApplyFailsWithUID), and the storage-version-migrator controller uses the same approach to stop apply from creating objects.Why not optimistic locking
resourceVersiondoesn't prevent the re-create. On the create path of an apply, the API server clears it without checking it.metadata.finalizersis a set for server-side apply, so the apply only adds this finalizer and leaves concurrent changes alone.Other changes
conflictRetryingPatchPrimary, the JSON Patch finalizer path, is moved into a private helper that both paths use.
