Improvements
The controller continues to cache cluster extensions and catalogs, with default caching scoped to the system namespace.
When Boxcutter is enabled, cluster object deployments and object sets are cached. Cached objects have annotations removed; objects without an owner-name label retain only limited deployment or set data.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
The manager now gets cache options from newCacheOptions. When Boxcutter is enabled, the helper adds caches and transforms for ClusterObjectDeployment and ClusterObjectSet.
Changes: Manager Cache Configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build and apply cache options cmd/operator-controller/main.go
newCacheOptions defines default cache settings and adds Boxcutter-specific caches for ClusterObjectDeployment and ClusterObjectSet. Both transforms strip annotations. For objects without the owner-name label, the deployment transform clears spec and status. The set transform retains selected spec fields and status fields, including conditions.
This change narrows what the operator-controller cache retains for ClusterObjectDeployment and ClusterObjectSet objects, while keeping the fields needed for revision discovery, completion checks and migration. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains. A brief label-less state on a deployment could briefly misreport rollout status, but the next apply restores the label.

Retain unlabeled ClusterObjectSet revisions in the cache.
The storage migrator must treat an existing revision as present regardless of owner metadata. The new cache selector hides unlabeled revisions before ListForGroup reads them. Migration can therefore re-enter Helm migration and create a duplicate revision.

@joelanford Not the same spec/status-clearing behavior. A COS-specific transform can reduce retained data, but it must preserve the fields used by revision discovery and migration.
I checked the current consumers:
SetupIndexes indexes Spec.Group. Clearing it makes the COS invisible to ListForGroup.
ListForGroup sorts by Spec.Revision.
BoxcutterRevisionStatesGetter reads Spec.LifecycleState, Status.CompletedAt, Status.Conditions, and bundle annotations.
ensureMigratedRevisionStatus reads Spec.Revision and Status.CompletedAt.
For this PR, I recommend caching all COS objects without clearing their spec or status. If you need further memory reduction, use a separate COS transform that removes only fields confirmed unused by operator-controller. Keep that transform out of object-controller’s cache.
Also, assigning transformClusterObjectDeployment directly to COS would only run annotation stripping. Its type assertion would skip the COS.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
#3084 will update the RevisionStatesGetter to look only at COS objects in the ownership chain of CE -> COD -> COS.
For ensureMigratedRevisionStatus, I assume that migrated revisions will have the owner label. Therefore those will have the full spec/status available?

@joelanford Yes. Migrated revisions receive labels.OwnerNameKey: ext.Name. GenerateRevisionFromHelmRelease calls buildClusterObjectSet, which adds that label. A COS-specific transform that clears spec/status only when the label is absent would preserve full spec/status for those migrated revisions.
You are also correct that #3084 narrows status reporting to the CE → COD → COS ownership chain. My previous reply did not separate that path from migration clearly enough.
One migration constraint remains: #3084 does not change Migrate’s initial ListForGroup check. The existing test, "looks up only the group regardless of owner metadata", explicitly removes the owner label and requires that revision to prevent repeated migration.
For an unlabeled COS, you can therefore clear status and most spec fields, but preserve Spec.Group and Spec.Revision for migration discovery and sorting. Cache all COS objects so that the selector does not exclude them before this check.
Require ownership before accepting the fallback COD.
The new cache makes every ClusterObjectDeployment visible, including an unrelated object with the same name as the ClusterExtension. The bundle-unavailable branch accepts that object from a name-only Get and returns success without checking ownership. Status reflection then reads the transform-cleared spec and status.
Require the COD to belong to the current extension before returning success. An uncached status read would expose the unowned object’s data without fixing this ownership boundary.

@joelanford Agreed with that sequence: merge #3084 first, then rebase this PR. This finding remains open until we verify that the rebased code checks ownership before accepting the fallback ClusterObjectDeployment.

[P2] Preserve unfiltered revision discovery for storage migration
This selector hides unlabeled revisions from BoxcutterStorageMigrator.Migrate's ListForGroup check. For an extension with spec.namespace set and an existing COS in its group whose olm.operatorframework.io/owner-name label is absent, migration now sees an empty group and accesses Helm again instead of skipping. This can fail reconciliation or repeat migration. The existing TestBoxcutterStorageMigrator subtest, "looks up only the group regardless of owner metadata", explicitly removes this label and requires migration to skip Helm access.
I reproduced this with an actual informer cache and the production changes from #3084 and #3086 combined:
Original selector: 1 existing revision, 0 Helm calls
This selector: 0 existing revisions, 1 Helm call
#3084 changes revision status reporting; it leaves migration unchanged, and MigrateStorage runs before revision-state lookup.
Please keep migration's COS discovery unfiltered, either by retaining these objects in the cache or by providing an unfiltered reader.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks, this fixes my original issue: the unlabeled COS remains visible to ListForGroup, and migration makes zero Helm calls. The retained completion timestamp, conditions, and bundle annotations also preserve revision-state reads.
I reproduced two remaining cases when the owner-name label is absent:
An owned COD loses its cached conditions and template metadata. ReflectClusterObjectDeploymentStatus then reports RollingOut for a healthy, completed deployment.
An incomplete Helm-migrated COS reaches ensureRevisionStatus with reduced status. Status().Update sets completedAt but removes the stored observedPhases and objectCounts.
I’d retain COD conditions and template metadata, and use a full uncached COS read or a targeted status patch for migration status repair.
I agree the ownership/adoption policy deserves a maintainer discussion. Group discovery should still see foreign or unlabeled revisions; skipping Helm migration does not itself establish ownership.

Preserve completion status for unlabeled migrated revisions.
If an existing migrated ClusterObjectSet loses its owner-name label, this transform clears Status.CompletedAt. The migration test explicitly permits that label state. On each reconciliation, BoxcutterStorageMigrator reads the cleared status and attempts to replace the existing, immutable CompletedAt timestamp. The failed status update blocks reconciliation. Preserve the completion value for migration checks, and use a full object when a status update is necessary. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

I added status.CompletedAt to the cached COS. Something in here smells a bit off to me though. I think the fact that migration can succeed when an unlabeled COS pre-exists is somewhat concerning to me.
@joelanford Preserving Status.CompletedAt fixes the timestamp-loss case. Your ownership concern is separate and supported by the migration code.
In internal/operator-controller/applier/boxcutter.go:
Migrate discovers revisions by Spec.Group == ext.Name.
If any revision exists, Migrate skips Helm discovery and revision creation.
For revision 1, ensureRevisionStatus can write CompletedAt when MigratedFromHelmKey == "true". It does not check ownership against the current ClusterExtension.
Thus, a successful return does not necessarily mean migration succeeded. It can mean a pre-existing COS suppressed migration. The test "looks up only the group regardless of owner metadata" explicitly accepts missing and foreign owner references.
I would keep group-based discovery so foreign COS objects remain visible as conflicts. Discovery should not authorize a status write. Before migration repairs status, I recommend checking the controller owner reference against the current ClusterExtension, including its UID. A foreign or unowned COS should not receive migration status merely because its group and migration label match.
One part of the original finding also remains: ensureRevisionStatus reads through the same cached client before Status().Update. For an owner-name-unlabeled COS with no completion timestamp, that read still returns reduced status. I recommend fetching the full object before updating status and rechecking completion and ownership on that object.
I inspected the implementation and tests. I did not run tests.

That failure seems to be an unrelated e2e flake: the scenario updates through 1.0.6, but ClusterExtensionIsRolledOut checks for Succeeded without confirming it observed the latest generation. The run ended with 1.0.6 requested but 1.0.3 still installed. Since 1.0.6 replaces 1.0.5, it is not an eligible upgrade from 1.0.3, so resolution retries with "no bundles found." The rollout wait should require the condition's observedGeneration to match the extension's current generation.
