Description

Complete the documentation and revision-identity E2E coverage for OPRUN-4781.

Explain that ClusterObjectSet.spec.group defines sibling membership independently of controller owner references, including after ownership changes or orphan deletion. Update the installation, upgrade, retention, and ownership descriptions for the CE → COD → COS controller flow.

Add four E2E scenarios covering names with a mismatched group or revision, leading zeros, and duplicate revisions. The duplicate case issues a create request and checks AlreadyExists while preserving the original COS UID and spec. Add a reusable create-failure step for this assertion.

Validation

  • make verify, make lint (0 issues), and make test-unit: passed on the original base.
  • New E2E feature: four scenarios / 17 steps passed on a fresh experimental KIND cluster. The final feature removes two redundant steps from that tested version.
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD: passed on the rebased branch.
  • Full checks and E2E have not been rerun after the rebase.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how extension content flows through ClusterObjectDeployment to immutable ClusterObjectSet revisions, including ownership, upgrades, and cleanup of archived revisions.
    • Documented group-based revision lookup, naming and sibling behavior, the five-revision cleanup default, and the error reported when the maximum revision is reached.
  • Tests
    • Added end-to-end coverage for revision naming and duplicate identities, including checks that rejected duplicates leave existing objects unchanged.

Clarify that spec.group defines COS revision membership independently of
controller ownership, and document the CE-to-COD-to-COS lifecycle.

Add E2E coverage for canonical names and duplicate revisions, with a
create failure step that checks Kubernetes name uniqueness.

Walkthrough

The draft concept document now describes COD-managed COS revisions, including their allocation, rollout, ownership, and group-membership rules. New end-to-end scenarios check revision names and duplicate creation. A test step checks whether a single kubectl create attempt returns an expected error.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "🌱 Document COS revision chains and test revision identity" matches the changeset. The diff adds documentation for ClusterObjectSet revision chains and E2E scenarios for revision identity, and the 🌱 prefix matches the template's "other" category. It names the two main parts of the change without listing files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the main changes. It explains the ClusterObjectSet.spec.group sibling membership and the documentation updates for the installation, upgrade, retention, and ownership flows. It lists the four E2E scenarios and the reusable create-failure step, and it gives validation results with a note on what was not rerun after the rebase. It links the related Jira issue OPRUN-4781. The template's "Description" section is filled in. The reviewer checklist is kept unchecked, which is acceptable. The description does not link a GitHub issue; it uses a Jira link instead.

Nitpick Make the spec-preservation assertion detect a changed lifecycleState.

55-55: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Make the spec-preservation assertion detect a changed lifecycleState.

The duplicate manifest uses lifecycleState: Active, the same value as the original COS. The final matches block checks only group and revision. An overwrite that copies the duplicate spec does not change either field, so the scenario cannot detect it. No other assertion detects this regression. The UID check does not detect an in-place update, and the create-failure step detects only a create that succeeds.

Use Archived in the duplicate manifest. Assert that the existing COS keeps Active.

Scope the COD integration to BoxcutterRuntime and describe revision
allocation above the highest existing revision in the group.

Use Archived in the rejected duplicate create and assert that the
original COS remains Active. Explain why the request uses a different
lifecycle state so the preservation check is meaningful.

Qualify unchanged-content reconciliation at the revision limit.

The COD controller checks for a foreign-controlled highest active COS before it checks the template hash or allocates a revision. If that COS is revision 9999999999, an unchanged COD receives OwnerConflict; it does not reconcile successfully. Restrict the unchanged-content statement to groups without a higher active foreign-owned COS. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Suggested wording
-Reconciliation of unchanged content still works.
+Reconciliation of unchanged content still works when no higher active, non-deleting COS is controlled by another controller.

Define N as the highest existing revision in the group.

The controller allocates one greater than the highest spec.revision in the full spec.group, including archived and foreign-owned COSs. A COD at revision 1 can therefore upgrade to revision 11 when a standalone COS at revision 10 already exists. Replace revision: N+1 with “one greater than the highest existing revision in the group.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document the foreign-owner conflict exception.

When the highest active, non-deleting COS has a different controller, the COD controller reports OwnerConflict and does not create a higher revision. (raw.githubusercontent.com) This sentence currently says that upgrades create a revision whenever foreign-owned COSs exist. Qualify the statement so it distinguishes lower foreign-owned revisions from a foreign-controlled active head.
