The release-automated workflow has failed on every push to master since 2026-07-20, for example run 40169936866. It fails in the "Setup Node" step:

##[error]Cache service responded with 400

actions/setup-node@v2 with cache: 'npm' uses an outdated cache client that the GitHub cache service no longer accepts, so npm ci and semantic-release never run. Security fixes merged since then, such as #946 and #952, have not been released.

Changes

  • actions/checkout v2 → v4
  • actions/setup-node v2 → v4

The inputs are unchanged (persist-credentials: false, node-version: 22, cache: 'npm').

Notes

  • This is the same action configuration that parse-community/parse-server and parse-community/Parse-SDK-iOS-OSX use in their release workflows. The iOS release workflow ran successfully with it today (run 40168930334).
  • ci.yml in this repository already uses setup-node@v3 with the same cache input, and its jobs pass.
  • The release workflow runs only on push, so this PR's checks don't exercise it. The first push to master after the merge will run it, and semantic-release will then release the pending fix: commits.
  • Both v4 actions still run on the deprecated Node 20 Actions runtime; the current majors are v7. Moving both workflows to v7 could be a separate change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated the tooling used in the automated release process.

🚀 Thanks for opening this pull request! We appreciate your effort in improving the project. Please let us know once your pull request is ready for review.

Tip

  • Keep pull requests small. Large PRs will be rejected. Break complex features into smaller, incremental PRs.
  • Use Test Driven Development. Write failing tests before implementing functionality. Ensure tests pass.
  • Group code into logical blocks. Add a short comment before each block to explain its purpose.
  • We offer conceptual guidance. Coding is up to you. PRs must be merge-ready for human review.
  • Our review focuses on concept, not quality. PRs with code issues will be rejected. Use an AI agent.
  • Human review time is precious. Avoid review ping-pong. Inspect and test your AI-generated code.

Note

Please respond to review comments from AI agents just like you would to comments from a human reviewer. Let the reviewer resolve their own comments, unless they have reviewed and accepted your commit, or agreed with your explanation for why the feedback was incorrect.

Caution

Pull requests must be written using an AI agent with human supervision. Pull requests written entirely by a human will likely be rejected, because of lower code quality, higher review effort and the higher risk of introducing bugs. Please note that AI review comments on this pull request alone do not satisfy this requirement. Our CI and AI review are safeguards, not development tools. If many issues are flagged, rethink your development approach. Invest more effort in planning and design rather than using review cycles to fix low-quality code.

Declare the workflow token permissions explicitly.

The workflow passes a separate RELEASE_GITHUB_TOKEN to semantic-release, so the built-in token only needs the permissions required by workflow actions such as checkout. Restrict it to contents: read instead of inheriting repository or organization defaults.
