Why

  • PER-8520: `Appium-Python-Client` was unpinned in `requirements.txt` and `setup.py`, so CI and downstream installs adopt any future release, including breaking or compromised ones.
  • PER-8523: `Cache.CACHE` is a class-level dict shared across threads. `set_cache` does an unguarded read-modify-write and `cleanup_cache` iterates then pops, so parallel screenshot calls can hit `RuntimeError: dictionary changed size during iteration` or lose fresh entries.

What

  • `requirements.txt`, `setup.py` (`install_requires`, `tests_require`): `Appium-Python-Client>=2.1.0,<7`. 2.1.0 is the first release that ships `appium.webdriver.common.appiumby`, which the SDK imports at load time, so no currently working version is excluded. Latest is 6.x.
  • `percy/lib/cache.py`: class-level `threading.RLock` held for the full body of `set_cache`, `get_cache` and `cleanup_cache` (reentrant because `get_cache` calls `cleanup_cache`). No behaviour change.
  • Version package left untouched; workflows untouched.

Verification

  • New `tests/test_requirements.py`: specifiers in `setup.py` and `requirements.txt` match and are bounded (fails on master).
  • New `tests/test_cache.py` race test: a writer runs mid-iteration of `cleanup_cache`. Fails on master with `RuntimeError: dictionary changed size during iteration`, passes with the lock. Plus a no-deadlock test for the reentrant path.
  • Docker (python:3.11-slim, clone mounted): 168 tests OK, coverage 100%, pylint 10/10.

Tickets: PER-8520, PER-8523

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved cache reliability during concurrent access. Reads, updates, and cleanup are synchronized to help prevent errors or lost entries when operations overlap and keep lookups responsive.
  • Compatibility
    • Appium Python Client versions are now constrained to the supported range of 2.1.0 through versions before 7. The installation and test requirements use the same range.

…-8520, PER-8523)

PER-8520: Appium-Python-Client was unpinned in requirements.txt and setup.py.
Constrain it to >=2.1.0,<7 in both (2.1.0 is the first release with the
AppiumBy import the SDK needs) and add a test that keeps the two in sync.

PER-8523: Cache.CACHE is shared across threads with unguarded read-modify-write
and iterate-then-pop. Guard set_cache/get_cache/cleanup_cache with an RLock and
add a deterministic mid-iteration race test.

Walkthrough

Cache operations now use a class-level reentrant lock for writes, reads, and cleanup. The Appium-Python-Client requirement is bounded in package and test dependencies, and tests verify that the declarations match.

Changes: Cache Synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lock cache operations and test concurrency
percy/lib/cache.py, tests/test_cache.py
Cache writes, reads, and cleanup use a class-level reentrant lock. Tests cover concurrent cleanup and cache set/get completion in a child process.

Appium Requirement Bounds

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound and verify the Appium requirement
requirements.txt, setup.py, tests/test_requirements.py
The Appium-Python-Client requirement is now >=2.1.0,<7 in both dependency declarations. A test compares the declarations and checks for both bounds.

Review comments at @setup.py:
- Line 25: Align the `python_requires` constraint in setup.py with the minimum
Python version supported by the Appium dependency bound. Either preserve Python
3.6 by using a compatible dependency path, or raise the minimum and update the
Python version classifiers and documentation consistently.

Review comments at @tests/test_cache.py:
- Line 63: Update the concurrent cache-cleanup test to synchronize the writer at
its pre-lock checkpoint with a signal, then call cleanup_cache() and join the
writer only after cleanup returns. Do not wait for writer completion while
cleanup holds _lock, so the test verifies concurrent mutation without
deadlocking the correctly locked implementation.
- Line 83: Update test_get_cache_does_not_deadlock to run the get_cache check in
an isolated child process with a timeout; if it times out, terminate and reap
the child before failing the test. Avoid using a thread that could leave the
shared Cache lock blocked and affect later tests.

Follow-up Comments

Outside diff Inspect testsrequire in the consistency test.

15-37: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Inspect tests_require in the consistency test.

_setup_py_requirement() reads only install_requires. If tests_require later uses a different Appium-Python-Client bound, make coverage can still pass because the test compares only install_requires with requirements.txt.

Add a second extraction and assertion for tests_require.

Update _setup_py_requirement to extract the Appium-Python-Client requirement
from a specified setup.py declaration, then update
test_appium_client_is_bounded_and_consistent to compare both install_requires
and tests_require against requirements.txt.
