Responses-compatible endpoints can return fresh item_id values for events belonging to the same output item. Wave currently keys streaming blocks by that ID, so it silently drops text deltas, reasoning summaries, and tool-progress updates when IDs differ. A request can complete successfully and report token usage while displaying an empty answer.

This change identifies reasoning/tool blocks by output_index and text blocks by (output_index, content_index). Local UI IDs stay consistent across start/delta/end events, and separate text parts in one message no longer overwrite each other. Partial replies saved on cancellation preserve output/content order.

Affected implementations

  • Gemini through LiteLLM's Responses API: inconsistent text IDs were reported for Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite/Flash/Pro on LiteLLM v1.80.11 (BerriAI/litellm#19125, fixed upstream by #19390). A later report documents reasoning-summary ID mismatches for Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview (#25336). These are reports about the compatibility layer, not Gemini's native API; current LiteLLM versions were not live-tested here.
  • GitHub Copilot Responses API, including enterprise endpoints: a captured stream returned different IDs for content_part.added, output_text.delta, and content_part.done while keeping the same output/content indices. The same behavior is independently documented in BerriAI/litellm#30071.

The fix applies to the existing Responses backend regardless of provider and does not add a provider or change authentication.

Validation

  • Regression tests replay synthetic SSE events for stable, changing, and empty IDs; multiple content parts/output items; reasoning summaries; interleaved tool progress; and ordered partial replies that exclude empty/non-text blocks.
  • Confirmed the new regression tests fail against the original parser and pass with this change.
  • go test ./pkg/aiusechat/...
  • go test -race ./pkg/aiusechat/openai
  • go vet ./pkg/aiusechat/openai
  • gofmt and git diff --check

Provider behavior was verified from the supplied SSE capture and linked public reports. Live authenticated provider calls and the desktop UI were not exercised in this environment.

Walkthrough

OpenAI streaming block lookup now uses output indices for reasoning and tool-call blocks, and output plus content indices for text blocks. Partial text extraction sorts text blocks by output index and then content index. Added SSE tests cover changing provider item IDs, separate text parts, reasoning summaries, tool progress, and partial text ordering.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ae54a

The change keeps streamed blocks associated by their response indices and preserves partial-text order when a reply is canceled. No material merge risk remains.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Order partial text blocks by output and content index.

extractPartialTextFromState iterates over state.blockMap, and Go map iteration order is random. Before this change, text parts in one output item shared an item-ID key, so at most one text block per item existed. Now every (outputIndex, contentIndex) pair has its own block. A canceled stream with more than one text part therefore saves its output_text contents in random order. The saved partial assistant message can show the text in the wrong sequence. To fix this, collect the text keys and sort them by outputIndex, then by contentIndex, before building textContent.

Addressed in ae54a02. Canceled partial replies are now ordered by output_index, then content_index, while empty and non-text blocks remain excluded. The new regression test fails before the fix and passes afterward. Added doc comments explaining the test helpers and regression invariants to address the documentation warning.

Validation passed: go test ./pkg/aiusechat/..., go test -race ./pkg/aiusechat/openai, go vet ./pkg/aiusechat/openai, gofmt, and git diff --check.
