Split unit N2 of #1546 (F1a — durable per-view viewStates pipeline)

Second unit of the split plan recorded in the tracking issue (fork issue 41). Depends on N1 (identity/claim); the buffer/mutation/write-path content is not included.

Scope (contract point)

  • Serialized persistedViewStateWriteQueue, fresh-read merge on save, 50-entry prune, corrupt-value guard.
  • Rekey on registration, clear on reset/delete, and export/import sanitization for viewStates (ContextProxy omit, importExport skip).
  • Typed ProviderSettingsNotFoundError handling used by the identity/adoption path.

Explicitly NOT in this unit

Budget (own delta vs the parent unit)

  • git diff vps2/n1-view-identity..<head>: 326 insertions, 428 deletions (~754 a+d) → under the 1,000 hard cap.
  • Cumulative diff vs 05d01f33d is intentionally larger; measure this unit against its parent, not main.

Evidence

  • ClineProvider.spec.ts + ContextProxy.spec.ts + importExport.spec.ts + ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts: 362 passed.
  • tsc --noEmit: clean (0 errors).

Stack / merge order

F0 (#1528) → N1 → N2 (this PR) → N3 → F1b (#1550) → F1c (#1552) → F3 (#1560) → F4/F5/F6/F7. Base is main; merge strictly in order.

Refs: #1546, tracking issue 41 (fork).

Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Mode and provider-profile selections are saved separately for each view and restored when it reopens.
    • Chat focus is routed across sidebar and tab views, with fallback when the focused view is hidden or closed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Saving a provider profile refreshes selections in views pinned to it.
    • Failed settings saves and resets no longer restore outdated cached values.
    • View recovery better handles stale connections and host interruptions while preserving tasks.
    • Deleting a configuration that doesn’t exist reports a distinct not-found error.
  • Settings
    • Per-view selections are excluded from settings exports and ignored when importing settings.

The PR adds claimed per-view persistence and restoration for mode and provider-profile selections. It excludes viewStates from settings import and export, coordinates secret writes with state resets, and adds a distinct error type for deleting a missing provider configuration.

Changes: Per-view State

ClineProvider restores saved selections and tracks view-local updates. Profile activation and saving update buffered API settings and refresh matching views and task handlers. Tests cover loading, local updates, and profile synchronization.

State Reset and Secret Writes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Coordinate secret writes with reset
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts
ContextProxy waits for pending secret writes during reset, rejects new secret writes while reset is active, and coordinates concurrent reset calls. Tests cover write ordering and reset failures.

Provider Configuration Deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Distinguish missing configurations
src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Deleting a missing configuration throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError. Other deletion errors remain wrapped. Tests distinguish a missing configuration from a retrieval failure containing “not found.”

Per-view selection persistence works for normal use. If the stored per-view state map is ever corrupted with a null entry, later saves for other views can fail until the bad entry is overwritten. This only matters for corrupted storage and is a small hardening fix, so the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

The description explains the PR scope, exclusions, implementation areas, test evidence, type-check result, and merge order. It does not use the required Related GitHub Issue format or include the pre-submission checklist, documentation impact, or contact sections.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The standing security defect remains unresolved. The changed viewStates schema adds claimToken to GLOBAL_STATE_KEYS (packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:133-136, 423-425), and ClineProvider stores host-minted claims there (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:717-730). The public API returns all non-secret settings (src/extension/api.ts:626-630), while viewStates is not secret (packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:361-415), so an extension using RooCodeAPI.getConfiguration() can read view IDs and claims. The same public API forwards caller input unchanged to ContextProxy.setValues() and profile persistence (src/extension/api.ts:639-645); the new schema accepts caller-supplied claimToken, so setConfiguration() can write or replace ownership claims without host registration or claim checks. This is a changed path that leaks an ownership credential and bypasses the host-minted claim boundary.

Resolution

Exclude viewStates from API.getConfiguration() output. Reject or strip viewStates in API.setConfiguration() before both ContextProxy.setValues() and profile persistence. Add API regression tests that store a claimed view state and verify that getConfiguration() returns neither viewStates nor claimToken, and that setConfiguration() cannot write caller-supplied view-state claims.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

FAIL — the new durable view-state path stores values that the consumer cannot recover or use. savePersistedViewState() writes viewStates and mints a claim at ClineProvider.ts:682-748, but postViewStateClaimToWebview() starts postMessageToWebview() with void; delivery failures are swallowed by postMessageToWebview() at 2193-2214. The webview still launches without viewStateId or viewStateClaim (ExtensionStateContext.tsx:635), the launch handler does not call setViewStateId() (webviewMessageHandler.ts:596-601), and no webview claim consumer exists. A reload therefore remains on the temporary ID, while loadViewState() skips that ID unless this instance authored it (ClineProvider.ts:978-986). The loaded buffer is also not propagated: loadViewState() writes viewLocalState (1025-1054), but getState() reads ContextProxy values and returns shared mode and currentApiConfigName (3965, 4082, 4086); getStateToPostToWebview() delegates to getState() (3619-3717). A saved mode or profile can therefore be durable but absent from the posted state.

Resolution

Wire the webview to persist and send the stable viewStateId and claim on every webviewDidLaunch, and make the launch handler await setViewStateId() before posting state. Make claim delivery return and check a delivery result, then retry or recover when delivery fails; do not use fire-and-forget delivery for claim messages. Merge viewLocalState over shared values in both getState() and getStateToPostToWebview(), including explicit cleared fields, so loaded durable selections reach state consumers.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior finding remains unresolved. ClineProvider.setViewStateId adds early rejection branches for non-string IDs (ClineProvider.ts:865-870) and normalized IDs longer than 64 characters (ClineProvider.ts:888-893). The focused ClineProvider.spec.ts registration tests cover "__proto__", claim rejection, and failed writes, but no test invokes either new branch. These changed negative-input behaviors therefore lack focused coverage at the unit-test layer.

Resolution

Add focused ClineProvider.spec.ts tests for a non-string ID and a string that normalizes to more than 64 characters. In each test, assert that the provider retains its previous viewStateId, performs no persisted-state read or mutation, does not load selections, and does not deliver a viewStateClaim.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The previous lifecycle leak remains. In the changed ClineProvider constructor, activeInstances.add(this) runs at line 489 before getWorkspacePath() at line 490 and before later synchronous initialization. If construction throws during workspace/editor teardown, construction aborts before dispose() can run, but the provider remains in activeInstances. Later getVisibleInstance() and getAllInstances() still iterate that retained provider. The constructor also adds the provider again at line 496.

Resolution

Remove the early activeInstances.add(this) and keep one registration only after all synchronous constructor initialization that can throw. Alternatively, delete this from activeInstances in constructor failure cleanup before rethrowing. Remove the duplicate registration.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:597
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter null viewStates entries before pruning.

getPersistedViewStates copies a null entry into the map. prunePersistedViewStates then reads .updatedAt on that entry during sorting. The queued write rejects before setValue runs, so the null entry stays in storage and every later write fails the same way. Filter out entries that are not objects in getPersistedViewStates. The next successful write then removes the bad entry.

🐛 Suggested fix

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Rebuild a task that runs under the saved profile, even when this view pins a different profile.

The rebuild at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2633-2641 runs only when this.pinnedProfileName === name. A task whose taskApiConfigName is name but whose view pins another profile keeps its old API handler after a non-activating save. The inner taskApiConfigName === name check already prevents switching other tasks, so the outer pin check blocks a rebuild that should happen. This predates the PR. The non-activating branch never rebuilt the task before, and this change only adds the pinned-view rebuild.

🐛 Suggested fix
 			if (this.pinnedProfileName === name) {
 				await this._saveViewLocalStateFromMutation({ apiConfiguration: providerSettings })
- // Only rebuild when the task actually runs under the saved profile: a
- // view pinned to this profile can hold a task that follows a different
- // sticky profile, and the forced rebuild would silently switch that

In the save flow, the task handler rebuild is incorrectly gated by

that pin check, but move the `getCurrentTask()?.taskApiConfigName === name`
check and `updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded` call outside it so a task using the

Review comments at @src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:
- Around line 745-746: Serialize storeSecret writes with resetAllState so writes
started after its in-flight snapshot cannot commit after the delete pass without
being reflected in secretCache; gate new writes during reset or include them in
the reset protocol while preserving existing storage safeguards. Add a
regression test that starts a write after the snapshot but before reset
completes and verifies reset leaves durable storage and getSecret() consistent.

---

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add focused `ClineProvider.spec.ts` tests for a non-string `viewStateId` and for
a normalized ID longer than 64 characters. Assert that each call keeps the
provider on its previous ID and does not load or mutate persisted state or
deliver a claim.

- Security Boundaries:
Exclude `viewStates` from `API.getConfiguration()` output. Reject or strip
`viewStates` in `API.setConfiguration()` before `ContextProxy.setValues()` and
profile persistence. Add an API regression test that stores a claimed view state
and verifies that `getConfiguration()` contains neither `viewStates` nor
`claimToken`.

- Persistence Integrity:
Make claim delivery awaitable and error-propagating, and add retry or recovery
after a successful `viewStates` write. Send the stable ID and claim with
`webviewDidLaunch`, handle `viewStateClaim` in the frontend, and call
`setViewStateId()` before posting state. Merge `viewLocalState` over shared
values in both `getState()` and `getStateToPostToWebview()`, including clears.
Route every profile activation, deletion, reset, and other mutation path through
the durable view-state helper so persisted profile selections stay synchronized.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Register the provider in `activeInstances` only after all synchronous
constructor operations that can throw, including `getWorkspacePath()`, or wrap
construction in failure cleanup that deletes `this` before rethrowing. Remove
the redundant second `activeInstances.add(this)`.

…f letting them survive it

resetAllState waits for the secret writes that are in flight when it starts, clears both caches,
drops both write claims and then deletes the keys. A storeSecret that begins after that in-flight
snapshot is invisible to all of it: it puts the value into the secret cache on entry, the reset
clears that cache underneath it, and the write's durable commit lands after the delete pass. The
success path never touches the cache again, so the value stays out of the cache while it stays in
durable storage, and the next initialize - what a restarted provider does - reads it back out and
surfaces to the user a secret they had just reset away.

Secret writes are therefore refused while a reset is in progress, with a SettingsWriteError naming
the key, and the flag is cleared only after the reset has re-initialized so the whole window is
covered. Refusing was chosen over serializing the reset: a serialized reset lets the write apply
and then erases it, which discards silently a save the user just asked for, whereas a refusal
leaves durable storage empty, which is what a reset promises, and hands the caller an error on a
path that already reports which keys it could not store. Serialization was available and was
rejected for that reason rather than omitted.

Case: erases a secret whose write begins after the reset has snapshotted the pending writes. It
parks the reset inside its own delete pass, starts the write in that window and reads three things:
the durable double behind the secrets, this instance's cache, and the cache after a fresh
initialize - the third is what makes it a security finding rather than a cache artefact. Case alone
against f3ca33b: Test Files 1 failed | 9 passed (10), Tests 1 failed | 315 passed (316), with
'expected late-secret to be undefined' on the durable read. With the gate: 10 test files and 316
tests, 0 failed. Control, the gate condition disabled: 1 failed | 315 passed again, so the case
measures the gate.

…selector

The rebuild that applies a saved profile's settings to a running task is keyed on the task's
own profile name rather than on the view's pin (ClineProvider.ts:2897-2902), and the case at this
file's :6365 that the review row pointed at covers the overlay refresh, not that selector. Two
cases now cover it: a sibling whose task follows the saved profile, whose handler rebuild is
asserted with the settings and with forceRebuild: true and exactly once, and a sibling whose task
follows another profile, whose rebuild is asserted not to happen at all. The rebuild itself is
stubbed so the case asserts the call and its options rather than the internals of a handler
build; the one assertion-free cast is there because updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded is private and
vi.spyOn needs the object and the key together, which the private-field alternative cannot give
it. The profile-store doubles are spies on the public methods (saveConfig, listConfig,
setModeConfig) rather than manager replacements, so this commit adds no suppression directive.

Controls, run rather than described. Change forceRebuild: true to false at the call site and the
matching case is the only failure in core/webview: Test Files 1 failed | 33 passed (34), Tests 1
failed | 955 passed (956), so the option is asserted rather than assumed. Comment the call line
out and the same case is the only failure again, so the rebuild call is what makes it pass rather
than the surrounding loop. The non-matching case stays green under both, which is its job. With
production restored: Test Files 34 passed (34), Tests 956 passed (956); tsc -p . --noEmit exit 0,
eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored on the file exit 0, prettier --check exit 0, and
src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched. Test-only, and __tests__ is one of the mutation gate's
excluded path segments (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85), so this adds nothing to the changed
executable-line bucket.

Review row: ClineProvider.spec.ts:6365 on this PR.
The existing case already proves the rolled-back id and the later retry. It did not say anything
about what the two stores hold in the interval, which is the half that a compensating-write
question turns on. Three assertions now pin it: the durable record still keys the entry under the
temporary id with its mode intact, the stable key was never created durably, and the payload
ContextProxy holds for viewStates is the same map the durable store holds - so a registration that
was rolled back cannot be visible through one store and invisible through the other.

Control for the new assertions, run rather than described: make the failing write partially
durable - apply the value to globalState, then reject - and exactly one test in core/webview
fails, at Test Files 1 failed | 33 passed (34), Tests 1 failed | 955 passed (956), and it is this
case, so the pins have teeth. The removal control on the behaviour itself: delete the rollback
line at ClineProvider.ts:973 and core/webview goes red at Test Files 1 failed | 33 passed (34),
Tests 13 failed | 943 passed (956), thirteen cases, which is the rollback being load-bearing
rather than this assertion being fussy. With production restored: 34 files, 956 tests, 0 failures;
tsc exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0; prettier --check exit 0; suppressions untouched.
Test-only, and excluded from the mutation bucket by scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85.

Note for whoever reads this next: this PR has no compensating write on the re-key path at all
(rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry at ClineProvider.ts:813-857 issues one write and rolls nothing
back), so these pins hold the interval on the shape that exists here rather than claiming the
shape of Zoo-Code-Org#2226's fix, which is tracked separately on the board.

…Org#2235

Merge base is 515cc02, the incoming head's own grandparent line: the two commits that arrive are
0a77cf8 (the sibling task-handler rebuild pair the review row asked for - rebuild asserted once with
the saved profile's settings and { forceRebuild: true }, asserted not to happen for a sibling on a
different profile) and ddda5ce (three pins on the registration-rollback case: the durable record
stays keyed under the temporary id with its mode intact, the stable key is never created durably, and
the payload ContextProxy holds for viewStates equals the durable map). Combined: one file,
src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, 118 added / 0 deleted, test-only.

git auto-merged that file and merge-tree on the two heads reported no conflicted files; the merge base
being 515cc02 means nothing on this side of the file moved under them. Checked rather than trusted:
- every one of my 295 test titles still exists in the merged text; the two new titles appear exactly
once each; my two activation-ownership cases are each still present exactly once.
- declaration count in ClineProvider.spec.ts (it/test including .each, .skip and .only headers, plus
describe forms): 381 before, 383 after, +2 which is exactly the two new cases; 35 .each tables on
both sides; the file executes 389 cases, all passing, where it executed 387 before this merge.
- inventory 3147 paths on each head and 3147 in the merged index; the merged blob is LF-only with a
trailing newline; src/eslint-suppressions.json is untouched (1443 lines, 3301 suppressed counts).
- test-only content: __tests__ is in EXCLUDED_PATH_SEGMENTS at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85, so this
merge contributes no changed executable lines and the extension bucket should not move from 595.

Gates on this tree, in compile-job order: format:check clean; lint 12/12; check-types 11/11;
test:code-qa-ci 7 pass 0 fail; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on the merged file. The solheim test
groups fail on Windows alone (SIGTERM teardown cases in scripts/solheim-smoke-workflow.test.mjs, POSIX
path literal in scripts/solheim-smoke/config.test.ts), both byte-identical to upstream main and
untouched here; solheim-smoke:check-types, test:agent-evals:unit, agent-evals:check-types,
lifecycle:model-check, webview-recovery:check-types, webview-recovery:model-check (15 regressions
rejected) and mcp:integration-check (16 advertised-grant combinations) are clean. Core lane: 194
files, 4271 cases, 4262 passed | 9 skipped | 0 failed, no file collecting zero cases - a lane report,
not the compile job.

This merge carries n-series' final Zoo-Code-Org#2227 head for tonight. The resetAllState failure path and the
matcherless expect.soft removal are landing on this branch as their own commits afterwards, per lead's
routing, and are not part of this commit.

state, load selections, or deliver a claim.

resetAllState() raised the flag that guards storeSecret as its first statement and lowered it only on the
success path, as the last statement before the method returned. The delete pass is a single Promise.all
over every global-state key and every secret key, so one keychain secrets.delete() rejecting rejects
resetAllState() itself, and so does a rejecting initialize(). There was no third path. With the flag left
raised, storeSecret() refuses every later secret write with SettingsWriteError for the life of the
instance, and ClineProvider.resetState() awaits resetAllState() with no catch, so the provider reset
aborts on the same error and the user cannot save an API key until the extension host restarts.

The body is wrapped rather than the two rejecting sites being patched individually: the guarantee being
claimed is about the flag, so a future await added inside the reset cannot reintroduce the leak. No
statement inside the reset moved and the rejection propagates unchanged - the case asserts the original
error rather than a wrapper, because a caller has to be able to tell a failed erase from a refused write.

Test: refuses a secret write during a reset and accepts it again after a failed reset - two halves, because
the guarantee has two halves. A write issued while the reset is running is refused rather than deferred (a
deferred write would re-store exactly the value the user asked to erase), and after a reset that failed the
next storeSecret() must resolve **and** read back through both the cache and storage, not merely fail to
throw.

Controls, run rather than described. Test before implementation: with only the case present, vitest run
core/config reports Test Files 1 failed | 9 passed (10) and Tests 1 failed | 316 passed (317) against the
316-test baseline at ddda5ce. Revert control (this commit's ContextProxy.ts reverted, the case kept):
the case goes red with Tests 1 failed | 316 passed (317), and what goes red is the production consequence and not a field: AssertionError: promise rejected "SettingsWriteError: Could not store apiKe..." instead of resolving at the post-reset storeSecret, caused by SettingsWriteError: Could not store apiKey: secret writes are refused while state is being reset thrown from ContextProxy.storeSecret at ContextProxy.ts:463.
tsc -p . --noEmit exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored on both files exit 0, prettier --check
exit 0, and the HEAD copies of both files pass the same prettier invocation, so the formatting diff is
mine. src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched.

Mutation posture: this commit moves 29 added / 23 deleted lines in one executable file, and the spec half
is excluded from the bucket by the /__tests__/ segment at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85. The unit is already
over the 500 changed-executable-line cap measured against upstream main (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs reports
extension 539 for this PR's head), which is a split question rather than something this commit creates.

Review row answered: Zoo-Code-Org#2227 ContextProxy.ts:751 (root comment 4479544520), first half - a failed reset
leaving the guard raised. The second half of that row, overlapping resetAllState calls, is measured
separately in the follow-up commit on this branch.
…lower the guard early

resetAllState() had one guard and no owner. Two overlapping calls each ran their own delete pass, and the
pass that finished first lowered the reset flag while the other was still inside its deletes, so a secret
write that landed in that window was refused even though a reset was still erasing state - and, on the
other side, a write that landed inside the still-running pass was erased by it. The finally added in the
parent commit guarantees the flag falls when the pass it belongs to ends; it does not say which pass that
is, and with two passes neither guarantee is worth much.

Single-flight rather than the depth counter the reviewer proposed: a second caller joins the pass already
running instead of starting one, so there is exactly one reset pass at a time and the flag cannot fall
while a pass is in flight by construction rather than by arithmetic. A counter needs every entry to be
matched by an exit on every path, including the throwing ones, and that is a claim about the code shape
rather than about the state, which is the thing the row is about.

resetAllState() drops the async keyword and returns the stored promise. That is not cosmetic: an async
function hands every caller a fresh promise object, so a joined caller is indistinguishable from a second
caller and the invariant cannot be observed, let alone asserted. Behaviourally the change is that a caller
which arrives mid-reset now waits for a reset it did not start, and a caller that arrives after a pass
settles starts a fresh one: the slot is cleared in the same finally that lowers the guard.

Test: joins an in-flight reset instead of starting a second pass and keeps the guard raised until it ends.
The erase double keeps a rejecter for every apiKey erase it hands back and settles them all at once, so
the pass cannot hang on an erase nobody rejects; the test yields one macrotask before counting because
the reset awaits its pending-write barrier before it reaches the delete pass, and apiKey is erased exactly
once per pass - SECRET_STATE_KEYS in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:361 lists it once and
GLOBAL_SECRET_KEYS at :401 does not list it - so one erase is the measurement of one pass.

Controls. Concurrency case first: with the parent commit's ContextProxy.ts in place it fails with
Tests 1 failed | 317 passed (318) and the message is the defect - AssertionError: expected Promise{...} to
be Promise{...} // Object.is equality - a second caller with a pass of its own. With single-flight:
Test Files 10 passed (10), Tests 318 passed (318). Nothing existing had to move: core/config went 316 to
318 by the two cases added here and its parent, and core/webview is 34 files / 956 tests passed, identical
to the same tree without these commits, so no ordering test disagreed with single-flight and none was
bent. tsc -p . --noEmit exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 on both files, and with
--prune-suppressions the recorded counts for the two touched files stay 1 and 5, unchanged.

Mutation posture: 44 added / 31 deleted lines in one executable file on a unit already measured over the
500 changed-executable-line cap against upstream main (539 for this PR head at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs),
so this commit adds to an overrun that exists without it; the spec half is excluded by the /__tests__/
segment at scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:85.

Review row answered: Zoo-Code-Org#2227 ContextProxy.ts:751 (root comment 4479544520), second half - overlapping
resetAllState calls.

…t reset case

The call chained no matcher, so it asserted nothing, and the array it built (including the delete call count) was never inspected - a measurement left behind from the investigation. The two assertions below it carry the guarantee.
The windows lane failed in @roo-code/vscode-webview on TranslationContext.locale-loading.spec.tsx with
'TypeError [ERR_INVALID_PROTOCOL]: Protocol "webpack:" not supported', a suite this PR does not touch
(0 files under webview-ui, 12 files total), while the same lane passes on every sibling head. Empty commit
to re-run the lanes rather than guess.
