feat(webview): per-view ack, history and profile restore writes (N5, split 5/5 of #1546) - #2237
Split unit N5 of #1546 (per-view ack, history and profile restore writes)
Final unit of the split plan (tracking issue: fork issue 41), on top of N4 (#2236). Completes the pure F1a content.
Scope
postMessageToWebview posts synchronously without awaiting the webview ack, with the per-view state ack wired through the message listener.
History restore (createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked, updateTaskHistory) and mode switch (handleModeSwitchUnlocked) keep the per-view buffer/persisted entry authoritative.
Profile activation/delete re-pins the view-local state; handleZooCodeCallback and dispose clean up per-view state without leaking another view's entry.
Focused tests for ack ordering/logging, restored-mode validation and profile-sync behaviour.
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
Final split unit N5: non-awaiting postMessageToWebview with view-state ack, history restore via createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked/updateTaskHistory, profile activation/delete re-pin, handleModeSwitchUnlocked and dispose cleanup. Completes the pure F1a content.
Modes, provider profiles, and API configurations are saved independently for each view, preserving each view’s selections when switching between them.
Returning to a task restores its mode and associated provider profile for that view.
Improvements
Settings imports continue to apply supported settings while ignoring saved per-view selections; exports omit those selections.
Updates to modes and provider profiles are more reliable when changes happen quickly or a view is reset.
The extension adds claim-bound per-view state for mode and provider selections. ClineProvider loads and updates those values across task-history and profile workflows. Global-state writes guard against stale cache restoration after failures or resets. Webview message dispatch no longer waits for renderer acknowledgement.
Per-key write generations prevent failed writes from restoring stale cached values after a newer write or reset.
View registration and state loading src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
ClineProvider validates view IDs and claims, persists and loads selections, and handles ownership, pruning, and asynchronous load cases.
Task and profile workflows src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Task restoration, mode changes, and profile operations update view-local state. Missing profiles use a typed error. Tests cover profile updates, deletion, reset, and persistence failures.
Webview message dispatch

Summary
Dispatch messages without waiting src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
ClineProvider dispatches messages without awaiting renderer acknowledgement and logs dispatch failures.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2151: The change adds claim tokens to persisted entries and validates presented claims during view registration. The supplied context notes that the dispose-and-adopt case may remain open.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2152: The change persists API configuration and profile data in per-view state, which relates to the issue’s secret-exposure concern. The supplied context says late-load ordering remains.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 1eed5
Resolve the remaining mode, profile synchronization and failed-write recovery issues before merging. Otherwise, tasks can use an unexpected mode or outdated credentials, and failed saves can undo newer selections or restore cleared settings.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the feature area (webview) and the main theme of the change: per-view acknowledgment, history restore, and profile restore writes. The raw summary shows the changeset covers per-view view-state persistence, claim tokens, and ack-free message posting, which the title partially captures. The title is long and uses internal split references (N5, 5/5 of #1546) that a teammate scanning history will not recognize. It is not vague and is not unrelated, so it passes.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The prior secret-leak remains in the changed path. activateProviderProfileUnlocked receives full profile settings from ProviderSettingsManager and stores them in viewLocalState.apiConfiguration (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3126-3147). The changed getValues() returns that nested object (ClineProvider.ts:4391-4393). API.getConfiguration() filters only top-level keys (src/extension/api.ts:625-628), so apiConfiguration.apiKey and other provider credentials pass through. A caller can activate a profile through setActiveProfile() and then read the credentials from getConfiguration().
Resolution
Do not expose credential-bearing apiConfiguration through ClineProvider.getValues() or API.getConfiguration(). Return only non-secret settings, or recursively redact every secret field in nested profile objects before returning configuration. Add a regression test that activates a profile containing apiKey and asserts that getConfiguration() contains no nested credentials.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The previous persistence failures remain. First, savePersistedViewState writes the durable entry and then calls postViewStateClaimToWebview without awaiting it (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:678-744, 792-794). postMessageToWebview also returns before the renderer promise settles (:2164-2233). If the webview closes before storing the claim, the next launch cannot present the claim, so it cannot restore the persisted view state. Second, profile activation is still non-atomic. saveConfig commits provider settings before the Promise.allSettled writes (:2841, 2861-2874), and activateProviderProfileUnlocked performs parallel writes without compensation (:3136-3158). A failed mode, shared-state, or per-view write can leave the profile, list, mode mapping, and selections inconsistent. Third, deletion commits the secret-backed profile removal at :2946 before the list and re-pinning writes at :2962-3068; a later failure leaves the secret store and global/view state divergent.
Resolution
Use an awaited, bounded claim-delivery path with retry, or revoke/mark the stored claim when delivery fails. Make profile activation transactional: sequence writes or compensate every committed provider-settings, list, current-profile, mode-mapping, saved-profile, and per-view value after any failure. Make profile deletion transactional, or restore the deleted secret and prior list/selection/view state when a later write fails. Add failure tests for claim delivery during disposal and for each activation and deletion write failing after earlier writes succeed.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description has a title-like opening and a scope section, but it does not follow the template. It has no 'Closes: #' issue link. It names only an internal fork tracking issue (issue 41) and refers to #1546, so the required 'Related GitHub Issue' is not met. The Description section has scope and budget data but does not explain the how or trade-offs for the reviewer. The Test Procedure section is replaced by an evidence block with one spec file and a tsc result, with no manual steps or repeat instructions. The Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes, and Get in Touch sections are missing. The description is partly complete, but the missing issue link and the missing template sections make it incomplete.
Resolution
Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' line with a public approved issue, for example 'Closes: #NNN'. Fork-internal tracking issues do not satisfy the template. 2) In 'Description', explain the implementation: per-view state keys, claim-token validation, rollback guard, the 50-record cap on closed views, and the restore-without-selection behavior for legacy entries. Name the reviewer risks. 3) In 'Test Procedure', list the commands run and the manual steps for multi-view mode and profile switching. 4) Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist. Mark the Documentation Impact item and state whether docs need updates. 5) Keep the Visual Snapshots and Videos sections, and mark them N/A if no UI change applies. 6) Restate the title in plain terms, or keep it and remove the split reference, so the history scan is clear. 7) Optionally add a Get in Touch entry.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused regression coverage remains incomplete for changed profile lifecycle behavior. deleteProviderProfile now adds typed missing-profile cleanup, unexpected-error propagation, shared and view-local pin/config repair, durable state updates, manager-name repair, and sibling-view re-pinning (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2925-3071). The only direct test (ClineProvider.spec.ts:5146-5180) covers survivor activation after global deletion, but omits view-pinned deletion, typed ProviderSettingsNotFoundError, unexpected deletion errors, durable cleanup, and multiple live views. handleZooCodeCallback now updates every existing Zoo Gateway profile through upsertProviderProfile, with active and inactive paths (ClineProvider.ts:3254-3331), but current tests cover only creation and the outer failure path (ClineProvider.spec.ts:9032-9078). The prior existing-profile test was removed, so updated tokens, base URLs, and activation flags remain unverified.
Resolution
Add focused ClineProvider tests for active and view-pinned profile deletion, typed missing-profile and unexpected-error branches, shared/view-local and durable cleanup, and multiple live views. Add an existing-profile Zoo callback test with active and inactive profiles that verifies updated tokens, base URLs, and activation flags.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior cancellation defect remains in the changed mode-switch path. handleModeSwitch runs handleModeSwitchUnlocked under enqueueProviderProfileMutation; after the 30-second timeout, the caller is rejected and the controller is aborted, but the underlying operation continues. handleModeSwitchUnlocked awaits setValue("mode", newMode) at ClineProvider.ts:2579-2580 without checking signal.aborted afterward. If the per-view viewStates write stalls and then resolves, the function emits ModeChanged at line 2588 and, when workspace locking is enabled, posts state at lines 2592-2595. The later abort check cannot prevent that work. The current tests cover an already-aborted signal and abortion during mode-config reads, but not abortion during setValue.
Resolution
Check signal?.aborted immediately after await this.setValue("mode", newMode) and return before ModeChanged or any later work. Add signal checks after each awaited operation in the remaining mode-switch path, including the workspace-lock post, profile-list write, profile lookup, profile activation, mode-config write, and final webview post. Add a regression test that stalls the per-view viewStates write beyond PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS, lets it resolve after timeout, and verifies that no post-cancellation mode event, profile mutation, or webview state dispatch occurs.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2361 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Move the TaskModeSwitched emit and _taskMode update after the per-view write.
TaskModeSwitched fires and _taskMode changes before the per-view setValue("mode") write. If that write fails, the error propagates, but the event and task mode stay changed. Observers see a rejected switch, and a reload restores the previous view selection. Reordering is not verified safe, so no diff is proposed. Check ModeChanged and profile-activation ordering before changing it.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Refresh sibling view buffers when a profile changes.
getConfiguration() reads the sidebar view's buffer through getValues(), and the buffer overrides the shared store. The buffer keeps a copy of profile P's apiConfiguration from loadViewState(). When another view activates or saves P, the sidebar buffer is not updated, so getConfiguration() can return the old P settings.
The sibling-refresh comments at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 and in the activation branch of persistProviderProfile describe a refresh that the code does not perform. The save-only branch at lines 2702-2716 refreshes only the pinned current view.
Do not replace the buffer with shared-store values. Each view keeps its own pinned profile in that buffer. Instead, refresh the buffered apiConfiguration of every other live view that holds P when P is saved or activated. Alternatively, resolve the buffered profile from providerSettingsManager when getConfiguration() runs. Update the comments to match the behavior that is implemented. The comments that say getState() is shadowed are inaccurate, because getState() reads the shared store.

Update the save and activation paths in persistProviderProfile to refresh
apiConfiguration in every other live view pinned to the affected profile,
preserving each view’s pinned profile. Keep getConfiguration reading the view
buffer, and revise the sibling-refresh comments to describe the implemented
behavior without claiming getState() reads from that buffer.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4108-4110 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Restored history mode is missing from the posted state during restore.
History restore now writes the mode only to the view buffer. Profile activation then posts state before the restored task exists, so the webview receives the pre-restore shared mode until a later post. The base wrote the shared mode before this post, so the stale window is new.
This changes only the posted mode field. getState() and profile binding stay unchanged, and an active task keeps precedence through currentTaskMode.

Update the restored mode selection used for the state returned by getValues so
it checks viewLocalState.mode after currentTaskMode and before the shared mode
and default; preserve active-task precedence and leave getState and profile
binding unchanged.
Assert the restored mode in the deleted-mode sticky-mode test.
The PR removes the only assertion on the fallback slug during history restore. The remaining test, should handle mode deletion between sessions, checks only that createTaskWithHistoryItem resolves and that handleModeSwitch is not called with "deleted-mode". If the fallback were removed, historyItem.mode would stay "deleted-mode" and this test would still pass.
The suggested assertion must not use defaultModeSlug as a bare identifier. The sticky-mode spec does not import it. Use the literal "code", which matches this spec's mocked defaultModeSlug.
🧪 Suggested test assertion
In src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, inside should handle mode deletion between sessions:
// Initialize task with history item - should not throw
await expect(provider.createTaskWithHistoryItem(historyItem)).resolves.not.toThrow()
// Verify mode switch was not called with deleted mode
expect(handleModeSwitchSpy).not.toHaveBeenCalledWith("deleted-mode")
+ // Verify the restore falls back to the default mode+ expect(historyItem.mode).toBe("code")

handleModeSwitchUnlocked’s persistence-failure catch. Keep the setValue("mode",

previousMode directly through contextProxy, so another provider’s concurrent
mode update is preserved.

update the manager’s current profile when `profileToDelete.name` matches the
active profile: activate the surviving profile so `currentApiConfigName` no
longer references the deleted profile. Leave the current selection unchanged
when deleting an inactive profile.
- Line 239: Update ClineProvider.prunePersistedViewStates to retain entries
whose viewStateId belongs to a live instance, and apply
MAX_PERSISTED_VIEW_STATES only to the newest closed-view entries. Return the

- Around line 2413-2416: Restore abort checks in handleModeSwitch: return before
getModeConfigId and listConfig when signal is already aborted, then check again
after both reads and before updateGlobalState and the activation path. Preserve

- Around line 2898-2900: Update the save and activation paths in
persistProviderProfile to refresh apiConfiguration in every other live view
pinned to the affected profile, preserving each view’s pinned profile. Keep

Refresh sibling views pinned to a profile on non-activating saves.
The non-activating branch in persistProviderProfile refreshes only this. A sibling provider pinned to the same profile keeps the pre-save credential in its view overlay and in its running task's API handler. This happens when Zoo Gateway token rotation saves a profile that another view has pinned. The activating branch already loops over ClineProvider.getAllInstances() to refresh siblings. Apply the same loop to the non-activating branch.
Suggested fix
if (this.pinnedProfileName === name) {
await this._saveViewLocalStateFromMutation({ apiConfiguration: providerSettings })
// Only rebuild a task that actually runs under the saved profile.

}

Update the non-activating branch in persistProviderProfile to refresh other live
ClineProvider instances pinned to the saved profile, not just this instance.
Reuse the existing sibling-instance refresh pattern, updating each sibling’s
view-local API configuration and rebuilding its task API handler only when that
task uses the saved profile.
Assert the stored selection and profile list after deletion.
Assert the stored selection and profile list after deletion.
The deletion test checks only the activateProfile call. That call is the settings manager name update in the global-deletion branch, which runs before the shared-state repair. Removing the repair (contextProxy.setValue("currentApiConfigName", ...) and setProviderSettings(...)) would leave this test passing. The test title describes only the settings manager update, not the shared store.

Update the deletion test around provider.deleteProviderProfile to assert that
contextProxy stores “survivor” as currentApiConfigName and that
listApiConfigMeta contains only the surviving profile, in addition to checking
the activateProfile call.
upstream/main moved from a4f774b to 3ee042d (Zoo-Code-Org#2300 condense, Zoo-Code-Org#2269 checkpoint restore,
Zoo-Code-Org#2271 prompt-cache TTL C6). One conflict, in src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:
reopenFromHistory resolved both sides - this unit's persistModeConfig:false rationale comment
is kept and upstream's expectedCurrentTaskId guard is adopted on the same call, so restoring a
history item neither binds the profile to the shared mode slot nor rebuilds/sticky-writes a task
that another view swapped in while the restoration was in flight. The second restore call site
(historyItem.apiConfigName) merged textually and already carries all three options.

- ContextProxy: seed the persisted-value map in initialize so a failed write on a key that
has never been written through this proxy rolls the cache back to the value storage actually
holds instead of an overlapping write's pending value.
- ClineProvider.loadViewState: keep the profile name and the settings it resolved to as one
pair; a profile name this view changed while the lookup was in flight no longer inherits the
loaded profile's configuration.
- ClineProvider.getState: read this view's restored mode from the buffer - getState() is what
task creation and getStateToPostToWebview read, so a restored mode has to be visible there.
- ClineProvider.deleteProviderProfile: clear the settings overlay of every view re-pointed away
from the deleted profile when the survivor's settings cannot be resolved, and rebuild the live
task (in this view and in sibling views) that still names the deleted profile.
- ClineProvider.setValues: roll a partially applied shared write back through the
generation-guarded helper instead of replaying every captured value.
Tests: 1 new ContextProxy case and 4 new ClineProvider cases, each red before its fix and green
after it; 43 suites / 1188 tests pass under core/webview + core/config.
