PR 1 — fix: prevent fabricated correlation IDs outside active requests (Fixes #125)

Branch fix/125-correlation-outside-request, commit e8ee886.

Problem. Flask, Quart and Connexion return a request proxy even when no request is active. get_current_request()
returned it unconditionally, so RequestUtil treated the proxy as a request, could not read or store an ID, and
returned a new UUID for every record. Background logs got unrelated IDs.

Reproduced on master (5177322), two records logged outside any request:

framework record 1 record 2
Flask f300d310-… f300d48c-… (third record also differed)
Quart f340583c-… f3405a08-…
Connexion 3 f37a795e-… f37a7b0c-…

Change. Each extractor's get_current_request() returns the proxy only when the framework reports an active request
context (flask.has_request_context(), quart.has_request_context()). Otherwise it returns None, and RequestUtil
already maps None to json_logging.EMPTY_VALUE. util.py is unchanged.

Tests. tests/test_correlation_outside_request.py (9 tests):

  • on unmodified master, 6 fail with the reported symptom and 3 pass as controls;
  • logs outside a request are -; consecutive and post-request logs are -;
  • supplied IDs are preserved inside a request (Flask, Quart, and a Connexion 3 spec-routed operation);
  • a generated ID is stable within one request and is not reused afterwards;
  • concurrent Flask requests keep their own IDs.

Local results.

  • Full unit suite, Python 3.9–3.13: 44 passed each (35 on master + 9 new).
  • Blocking flake8: 0.
  • Connexion 2.14.2 environment: outside-request tests pass (the Quart cases are not run there; Quart is not installed in that environment).
  • Mutation: reverting the fix makes the same 6 tests fail again.
  • Framework probe: Flask, Quart and Connexion in-request behaviour is identical to master; only outside-request IDs change.

Compatibility. Only the outside-request value changes (- instead of a random UUID). In-request IDs and the JSON
schema are unchanged. test-requirements.txt now installs connexion[flask,swagger-ui], because Connexion 3's
FlaskApp needs the a2wsgi package from the flask extra. Without it the Connexion 3 tests cannot import the app.

Limitations. The Connexion 3 request log is still dropped (#101); this PR does not change that.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Logs generated outside an active Flask, Quart, or Connexion HTTP request no longer receive a newly generated correlation ID. These records now use -.
    • Connexion 3 error handling and middleware preserve approved correlation headers when available and use - when none is provided.
    • Correlation IDs remain stable throughout a request and are correctly isolated between separate or concurrent requests.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for correlation ID behavior across supported frameworks, including requests, background logging, and concurrent activity.

Review update (round 2)

  • Head 4fae422: the test module now restores the Flask, Connexion, Quart and werkzeug logger state around every test
    (it previously left five handlers and parent=None on flask-request-logger), and the Connexion spec directory uses
    tmp_path instead of an uncleaned mkdtemp().
  • Verified on this head: 44/44 on Python 3.9-3.13; blocking flake8 clean; reverting the fix fails 6 tests; Connexion 2.14.2
    environment: 6 passed, 1 skipped (the Connexion 3-only test), Quart absent there.
  • Connexion 2 and 3 handling, support_global_request_object() and RequestUtil are unchanged. test-requirements.txt
    now requests connexion[flask,swagger-ui].

Review update (round 3, head 21ca29f)

Test-only changes. The production code (has_request_context() checks in Flask, Quart and Connexion) is unchanged.

1. The concurrent test could not detect generated-ID leaks. Confirmed and fixed.

  • test_concurrent_flask_requests_do_not_exchange_ids sends correlation headers. The library reads those headers on every call and never stores them, so the test passes even when ID storage is shared between requests.
  • Mutation check: with the Flask extractor's g storage replaced by a process-global, the old test still passes.
  • The old test is kept. A new test, test_concurrent_flask_requests_keep_their_own_generated_ids, adds:
    • six header-less requests, one test client per thread, run in a thread pool;
    • a threading.Barrier between two log calls in the handler, so every request has generated its ID before any request logs again;
    • each log record tagged with an explicit request_number in props.
  • It asserts that:
    • the generated IDs are non-empty and all different;
    • both log records of each request carry the ID that request returned; no ordering is assumed;
    • logs after the requests get -.
  • The new test fails under the mutation above and passes on the real code. It passed 30 out of 30 repeated runs.

2. The capture fixture only reset json_logging after a test. Confirmed and fixed.

  • It now calls undo_imports_from_package("json_logging") before and after each test. It is requested after the autouse logger-state fixture, so it is torn down first.
  • Demonstrated with a temporary test, not committed, that leaves json_logging initialised and runs first. With the old fixture: 1 failure, RuntimeError: Can not call init more than once. With the new fixture: all pass.

Results:

  • Each test passes alone.
  • The full suite passes in forward and reversed order (45 passed); the logger-state checker finds no leaks from this module.
  • 45/45 on Python 3.9–3.13; blocking flake8 0; GitHub Actions 10/10 on 21ca29f.

Review update (round 4, head 8a081de): Connexion 3 outside the Flask request context

Confirmed regression, now fixed.

  • Where it happens: Connexion 3 FlaskApp runs two kinds of user code after the wrapped Flask app has returned, so flask.has_request_context() is False there even though a Connexion request is active:
    • handlers registered with app.add_error_handler(), which run in Connexion's ExceptionMiddleware;
    • ASGI middleware added with app.add_middleware(), when it logs after await app(...).
  • The cause: the has_request_context() guard from round 1 dropped that request.

Reproduction on Connexion 3.3.0, Flask 3.x, Python 3.12. No functions are patched; a real error handler and a real middleware are used.

Log site master 6d85ca3 previous head 5ab9fd2 8a081de
view, X-Correlation-ID: test-123 test-123 test-123 test-123
middleware after app, same request test-123 - test-123
error handler, X-Correlation-ID: test-123 test-123 - test-123
error handler, no header new UUID per record, unrelated to the view's ID - -
outside any request new UUID per record - -

Fix (json_logging/framework/connexion/__init__.py):

  • With a Flask request context, behaviour is unchanged.
  • Without one, the Connexion 3 request is exposed only when Connexion's request scope (connexion.context.scope, a werkzeug LocalProxy that is falsy outside a request, so no exception is raised) is bound and the request carries a correlation header.
  • Without a header, the ID can't be stored outside Flask (connexion.g is flask.g), so those records get - rather than a new UUID per record.
  • On Connexion 2, connexion.context doesn't exist, so only the Flask check applies; connexion.request there is flask.request.
  • Flask, Quart, get_correlation_id(request=...), the JSON fields and the public API are unchanged.

Rejected alternatives:

  • Exposing any bound Connexion request: outside Flask, every record would get a new UUID. The no-header test fails with that variant.
  • Moving ID storage into Connexion's own per-request context: that would let a generated ID from the view reach the error handler, but it changes where IDs are stored for every Connexion request. Left out as a separate design question.

Tests (tests/test_correlation_outside_request.py, Connexion 3 only):

  • a supplied header in a post-app middleware and in an error handler, logged twice;
  • without a header, the view keeps one generated ID, a new ID is used for the next request, and the middleware and error handler get -;
  • 5 concurrent ASGI requests via httpx.ASGITransport, where the middleware waits until every view has finished, so all Connexion contexts are live at once. Each record keeps its own request's ID.

Mutation checks:

  • previous head: 2 of the new tests fail;
  • master's adapter: 4 fail;
  • the fix without the header requirement: the no-header test fails.

Results:

  • Locally:
    • this file passes 13/13 on Connexion 3.3.0; 30/30 repeated runs of the Connexion 3 tests;
    • the full suite passes 51/51 on Python 3.9–3.13, in forward and reversed order, with no logger-state leaks from this module;
    • blocking flake8 reports 0.
  • Connexion 2.14.2 (Flask 2.2.5, Python 3.9): 7 passed, 4 Connexion-3-only tests skipped, 2 Quart tests deselected (Quart isn't installed there).
  • GitHub Actions on 8a081de: 15/15 (Python 3.9–3.14, smoke tests on 3.9 and 3.14, Flake8).

Not changed: in Connexion 3, request records still fail with AttributeError: content_length, on master and on this branch (#101). The new tests exclude request logging for their route for that reason.

Flask, Quart and Connexion expose a request proxy even when no request is
active. get_current_request() returned that proxy unconditionally, so
RequestUtil treated it as a request, failed to read or store an ID, and
returned a freshly generated UUID for every log record emitted outside a
request. Background logs therefore got unrelated IDs.

get_current_request() now returns the proxy only when the framework reports
an active request context (flask/quart has_request_context), and None
otherwise. RequestUtil already maps None to json_logging.EMPTY_VALUE.
Requests that carry a correlation header or generate an ID are unchanged.

Tests cover outside-request logs, repeated background logs, supplied and
generated IDs inside requests, sequential and concurrent requests, and
Connexion 3 operations. test-requirements.txt installs connexion[flask] so
Connexion 3's FlaskApp, which needs the a2wsgi package, is exercised.

Logs emitted outside an active Flask, Quart, or Connexion request now use - as the correlation ID instead of a fabricated one. Logs inside a request keep their supplied or generated IDs. The behavior is narrowly scoped, documented in the changelog, and covered by regression tests, including concurrent requests. No merge-blocking issues remain.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8a081

The change narrows request detection and prevents fabricated correlation IDs. No newly introduced attack path was identified. Remaining uncertainty concerns request-context ownership and cleanup across Connexion versions and inherited execution contexts.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attacker-controlled scope is correlation metadata for requests carrying configured headers in applications using these integrations. The examined flow ends in returned correlation values and formatted log fields, not an authorization decision. Downstream collectors, tenant interpretation, and service-wide propagation are not established by the supplied evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new Connexion gate avoids entering ID generation outside Flask when no configured header exists. When a header is available, the consumer propagates it without storing a generated value. Ownership and teardown remain delegated to framework context mechanisms; the adapter introduces no independent correlation-state store.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #125 requirements are met. Flask and Quart now return a request proxy only for an active request context. Connexion also checks its Connexion 3 scope and preserves supplied correlation headers when Flask context is absent. Otherwise the extractors return None, so existing RequestUtil behavior emits correlation_id: "-". The reported tests cover deterministic outside-request behavior, supplied and generated in-request IDs, sequential and concurrent isolation, and Connexion 3. The reported suite and blocking flake8 checks pass. CHANGELOG.md documents the behavior change.

Explanation

The reviewed changes stay within issue #125. The Connexion 3 scope handling, framework tests, test dependency update, and changelog entry support the requested correlation-ID behavior and its regression coverage. No unrelated framework, schema, global logger, or broad refactoring change is established by the current PR evidence.

LlamaPReview — No blocking issues found

Safe to merge: Flask, Quart and Connexion now expose the request proxy only while a request context is active, so outside-request logs get - instead of a fabricated UUID while in-request IDs, supplied headers and request isolation are unchanged.

Review details and evidence

Material unknowns

  • Whether the same Connexion adapter is meant to serve a Flask-less Connexion 3 ASGI app, where _flask.has_request_context() would not reflect the active request. If it is, in-request get_correlation_id() on that path could report - instead of the header value; as evidenced, this is not a demonstrated regression and does not change the merge posture.
    • Check: Confirm the Connexion adapter's intended app type; no pre-merge action required.
  • Whether any consumer of get_current_request exists beyond RequestUtil; the search hit set returned only the extractor definitions and the RequestUtil call. Any other consumer would receive the already-documented None-outside-request value, so an answer would not change the decision.
    • Check: None required; search coverage is not proof of absence.

- Readiness: the test waited only for the Unix socket file to exist, which does
  not mean the worker accepts requests. It now polls GET /ready over the socket
  until 200, with a 30 s monotonic deadline and a 2 s per-attempt timeout. It
  fails early, with gunicorn's full output, if the process exits during startup.
- /ready is a route excluded from request logging, so probing adds no records.
- Gunicorn's output goes to a file, not a pipe, so a large log cannot block the
  server. The server is terminated and reaped in a finally block.
- The socket lives in a short temporary directory, because macOS limits Unix
  socket paths to about 104 bytes and pytest's tmp_path can exceed that.
- Every line starting with '{' must be valid JSON. Previously malformed lines
  were skipped silently.
- In CI (CI=true) a missing gunicorn fails the test instead of skipping it.
- README: states the dependency on #127 explicitly, documents the readiness
  probe and the --preload assumption.

Local status: this sandbox refuses gunicorn's own socket check (EPERM), so the
end-to-end run fails here. It fails fast with the output attached.

- init_request_instrument() and the Flask/Connexion/Quart integrations change
  process-wide loggers. Measured after this module: flask-request-logger had 5
  leftover handlers and parent=None. An autouse fixture now snapshots and
  restores the request loggers and werkzeug after every test.
- The Connexion spec directory was created with tempfile.mkdtemp() and never
  removed. It now uses pytest's tmp_path.

Verified: 44/44 on Python 3.9-3.13, blocking flake8 clean, reverting the fix
still fails 6 tests, and after the module the request loggers are back to
their original state.

Refs #125
The existing concurrency test sends correlation headers, which are read from the
request each time and never stored, so it cannot detect a generated ID leaking
between requests. Add a test where header-less requests are held in flight
together by a barrier between two log calls, and check that each request's log
records carry the ID that request returned, and that later logs get '-'.

Reset json_logging before each test in the capture fixture, not only after, so
the tests do not depend on earlier modules cleaning up.

Add a Connexion 2 in-request regression test.

The repository documents Connexion as a supported Flask-backed integration. The current operation test skips every Connexion version except major version 3, while the Connexion 2 test only exercises the outside-request path. Therefore, a regression in supplied correlation-ID handling during a Connexion 2 operation can pass the suite. Add a Connexion 2-compatible operation assertion for the supplied header. Generated-ID, post-request, and concurrency coverage are not required by this finding.

…st context

Connexion 3 runs error handlers registered with app.add_error_handler() and ASGI
middleware after the wrapped Flask app has returned, so flask.has_request_context()
is false there even though a Connexion request is active. The has_request_context()
guard added for #125 made those logs return '-' where master returned the
request's X-Correlation-ID.

When there is no Flask request context, expose the Connexion 3 request only when
Connexion's request scope is bound and the request carries a correlation header.
A generated ID cannot be stored there (connexion.g is flask.g), so without a header
those logs keep '-' instead of a new UUID per record. Connexion 2, Flask and Quart
are unchanged.

Tests cover an error handler and a post-app middleware with supplied headers,
the no-header case, and concurrent ASGI requests with live contexts.

a Unix socket, sends a supplied-ID request and a generated-ID request, and
checks that application and request records carry the same IDs and that no
gunicorn.access JSON line is written. gunicorn is added to test-requirements.txt
for this test; it is skipped when gunicorn is not installed.

Local status: the sandbox this change was prepared in refuses Gunicorn's
socket connection (EPERM), so the automated test was not run to completion
there. The launch and record layout were verified manually earlier.

Fixes #25

* test: wait for gunicorn readiness and fail on malformed JSON in #25 test

Refs #25

* test: detect Gunicorn access lines in raw output; correct access-log docs

- The README said removing accesslog = None turns Gunicorn's access log on.
  None is already Gunicorn's default, so nothing changes. Document how to turn
  it on (accesslog = "-" or --access-logfile -) and the duplicate records.
- Detect Gunicorn access lines in the raw output, in plain text or wrapped in a
  JSON record, instead of only checking JSON records for gunicorn.access.
- Add a negative control that enables --access-logfile - and checks that the
  detector finds the extra lines.
- Assert that only the two / requests are request-logged (/ready is excluded),
  that the worker's 'Worker exiting' gunicorn.error record is JSON, and that the
  workers have exited.
- Keep Gunicorn 25+'s control socket in the test's temporary directory.
- Narrow the gunicorn.error wording: '-' outside requests needs PR #127.
- Drop a reference to a log file that is not in the repository.

* test: cover two Gunicorn workers and outside-request logs; correct docs

- Add a two-worker test (the configured count). It waits until both workers
  have logged their startup record, then checks per worker that each booted,
  logged 'worker ready' with its own PID and correlation_id '-', and exited
  with a JSON 'Worker exiting' record with '-'. Request checks are per request,
  so they do not depend on which worker served it.
- app.py logs 'worker ready' at import time, outside any request; the tests
  assert it gets json_logging.EMPTY_VALUE. Removing #127's Flask guard fails
  the one- and two-worker tests.
- Send an X-Request-ID request as well, and check X-Correlation-ID, X-Request-ID
  and generated IDs across responses, application logs and request records.
- README: remove the 'depends on PR #127' wording (merged); give the stream for
  each kind of output (errorlog '-' is stderr, accesslog '-' is stdout); say
  when the 'Update all existing logger' line appears; add the scope of the
  example (sync worker; gevent, --preload and a custom logconfig not tested)
  and how init_flask() treats handlers from a custom logging configuration.
- gunicorn.conf.py: errorlog '-' writes to stderr, not stdout.

Bump the version to 1.6.0 and collect the changelog into a 1.6.0 section
covering every change merged since 1.5.1:

- Added: json_logging.EXCLUDED_FIELDS (#129, fixes #98)
- Fixed: FastAPI request-context propagation (#123, fixes #124); outside-request
  correlation IDs in Flask, Quart and Connexion (#127, fixes #125); non-web
  get_correlation_id() (#128, fixes #126); Sanic 24+ logging config (#133)
- Documentation: FastAPI/Uvicorn startup (#130, fixes #106); Gunicorn and
  Flask example (#131, fixes #25)
- Compatibility: default output unchanged unless EXCLUDED_FIELDS is set; the
  framework behaviour changes; Python 3.9+ FastAPI context path; CI coverage

The previous 'other integrations unchanged' and 'no change to the JSON schema'
statements are replaced, since they do not hold for the whole release. The
date is added when the release is cut. No library code change.
