Summary

Extend tested compatibility before the 1.6.0 release:

  • Add Python 3.14 to the full pytest matrix (Python 3.9–3.14).
  • Run Flask, Quart, FastAPI, and Sanic HTTP smoke tests on both Python 3.9 and 3.14, rather than only 3.9.
  • Upgrade actions/checkout and actions/setup-python from v2 to v7.
  • Disable matrix fail-fast to collect outcomes across versions and backends.
  • Update maintenance / contributor instructions to document the expanded matrix.

Real compatibility issues detected and fixed

The new smoke coverage exposed two issues that were invisible to the previous matrix:

  1. Quart on Python 3.14: tests/smoketests/quart/api.py called asyncio.get_event_loop() before any loop existed; this raises RuntimeError on Python 3.14. The smoke-test app now allows Quart to manage its own loop.
  2. Sanic on Python 3.14:
    • The previous smoke test pinned Sanic 20.3.0 and its old httpx import fails because cgi was removed in modern Python.
    • Keep testing Sanic 20.3.0 on Python 3.9, and test maintained Sanic 25.12.x on modern Python (3.10+) with environment-marked requirements.
    • Sanic 24.6 and 25.12 do not include a format key in the generic and access default logger formatters. Make the library's Sanic integration remove those keys with .pop("format", None) rather than unconditional del. This keeps legacy behavior and supports the newer configuration shape.

The production fix is confined to two defensive dictionary operations in the Sanic adapter; other library code, public APIs, and JSON schema are unchanged.

Validation

  • 15/15 GitHub Actions jobs passed on exact head 2b29ec2, workflow run #39479173476: 38 pytest cases passed per Python 3.9–3.14 environment, eight Flask/Quart/FastAPI/Sanic smoke jobs passed on 3.9 and 3.14, and Flake8 passed.
  • Added isolated tests/test_sanic_logging_config.py regression coverage for legacy (format present), modern (format absent), and actual installed Sanic logging defaults. Each test calls init_sanic(enable_json=True), checks the configured logger formatter classes, and verifies that the selected formatter emits parseable JSON with expected message and extra fields.
  • Added an Unreleased changelog entry for the user-visible Sanic logging fix. The v1.6.0 release PR should include this entry when finalizing the changelog.
  • Both 3.14 compatibility failures were reproduced from CI logs before fixes; earlier failing runs remain in the workflow history.

Limitations

Tests run on GitHub-hosted Ubuntu with the listed dependency versions. This does not imply Windows/macOS, Python 3.14 free-threaded (3.14t), or all combinations of historical framework versions are supported. Sanic 20.3.0 remains exercised only on Python 3.9, while Python 3.14 uses current Sanic. No PyPI publication or version bump in this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed Sanic logging initialization for configurations without formatter entries.
    • Improved compatibility with legacy and modern Sanic logging configurations while preserving JSON log output.
  • Compatibility

    • Added Python 3.14 to continuous integration testing.
    • Updated Sanic smoke-test coverage to use compatible versions across supported Python releases.
  • Maintenance

    • Upgraded CI tooling and clarified documented Python test coverage.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR updates GitHub Actions and Python coverage through 3.14, adjusts Quart and Sanic smoketest compatibility, and makes Sanic formatter handling tolerate missing format keys. CI guidance and maintenance documentation reflect the updated coverage.

Changes: Python CI and smoketest compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow actions and Python matrices
.github/workflows/code_quality.yml, AGENTS.md, MAINTENANCE.md
The workflow upgrades checkout and Python setup actions, adds Python 3.14 to unit-test coverage, and configures backend smoketests for Python 3.9 and 3.14. CI guidance and maintenance documentation describe this coverage.
Backend smoketest compatibility
tests/smoketests/quart/api.py, tests/smoketests/sanic/requirements.txt
The Quart smoketest no longer passes an explicit event loop to app.run. Sanic requirements select versions based on the Python version.

Sanic formatter configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional formatter settings
json_logging/framework/sanic/__init__.py, tests/test_sanic_logging_config.py, CHANGELOG.md
The Sanic configurator removes generic and access formatter format keys with .pop(..., None). Subprocess regression tests cover multiple Sanic logging configurations, and the changelog records the compatibility fix.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~15 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2b29e

No actionable PR-introduced risk remains after normal checks; this change is mergeable.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 17b40

The workflow already exposed checkout credentials to dependency installation and test code. This PR extends that exposure to additional compatibility jobs, but does not explicitly increase token permissions or introduce production deployment authority. The Sanic change preserves existing logging controls while avoiding an initialization failure. Effective CI token permissions remain unknown.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The pre-existing checkout-credential exposure now also applies to newly added Python 3.14 jobs and modern-Sanic dependency installation. Compromised dependency or package-build code can execute while the job's repository credential remains available. The expansion increases execution opportunities, not demonstrated token authority; effective permissions remain unspecified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established exposure is the repository credential available within an affected CI job. Additional matrix jobs provide separate execution opportunities, not evidence of shared credential storage or broader authority. Repository write access, other-repository access, production access and environment-secret access cannot be established without effective token and platform policy.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The two retained findings describe dependency or editable-package installation executing after credential-bearing checkout. Attacker-controlled build code could access or exfiltrate that credential before cleanup. This condition predates the PR; the supported change is its application to additional compatibility executions and the newer Sanic installation path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The strongest limiting evidence is that credential persistence already existed, matrix values are fixed, jobs execute separately, and no explicit permission increase is introduced. Expected checkout cleanup occurs after build and test execution, so it does not isolate credentials from code running earlier in the job. The changed Sanic operations introduce no request-controlled input to global configuration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Where later Git operations do not require authentication, disable checkout credential persistence and declare the minimum required token permissions explicitly. These measures would narrow the existing build-code credential boundary independently of matrix size.

For the code rabbit comment

This is an existing issue, I will open a new PR for this. As the scope of this PR is only to add python 3.14 unit and framework smoke test coverage.
