Problem

On native Windows the Android driver never starts, even with a complete SDK (#1051). Three separate things stop it:

  1. SDK discovery looks for the bare tool names, but Windows has adb.exe, emulator.exe, sdkmanager.bat and avdmanager.bat. A complete SDK is reported as missing every tool. With no ANDROID_HOME, it also only searches the macOS default.
  2. Batch files can't be spawned. Node refuses to spawn a .bat without a shell since CVE-2024-27980 (Node security release). So once the SDK is found, sdkmanager --version fails with spawn EINVAL, and so does every avdmanager call.
  3. The device root is refused as wrong-permissions. Node reports every writable directory on Windows as mode 0o666.

Change

  • sdk-paths.ts: on win32, the tool paths get .exe/.bat, and the default root is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Android\Sdk. androidPrerequisites takes an optional platform, so both layouts are tested on any host.
  • New src/ports/windows-command.ts, used by NodeProcessRunner.spawn and spawnStreaming: a .bat/.cmd on Windows runs through cmd.exe /d /s /c.
    • Each argument is quoted and its cmd.exe metacharacters are escaped once.
    • An argument holding %, " or a line break is refused. cmd.exe can't pass these through unchanged to a script that reads its arguments inside quotes, as the SDK's Gradle-generated scripts do (if "x%~1" == "x", set CMD_LINE_ARGS=%*). No SDK call passes any of them.
    • Every other command, and everything off Windows, is spawned exactly as before.
    • No dependency is added. The workaround in Windows: daemon start/doctor time out with ENOENT because IPC uses a filesystem socket (0.2.0) #1051 used cross-spawn, which is only a transitive dependency here.
  • device-root.ts: a platform with no uids already skips the owner check, and now skips the mode check too.
  • The AGENTS.md manuals for android, ports and core are updated.

Verification

All on Windows 11 (10.0.26200), Node 24.14, Android SDK cmdline-tools 20.0, API 34, NVIDIA RTX 5060. This branch was combined with #1052, because the daemon can't start on Windows without it.

  • simlock doctor reports {"findings":[]}, and the log shows Discovered driver for android. simlock catalog --platform android lists API 34 and the device profiles from avdmanager.bat list device.
  • simlock lease --platform android --device "Pixel 8" was granted in 63 s: the AVD was created, cold-booted, and its clean snapshot captured.
    • simlock adb shell getprop sys.boot_completed returned 1.
    • SurfaceFlinger reports rendering on the host GPU (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060) with the default android.emulator.gpu: auto, in a window.
  • Release reclaims through strategy: "snapshot" in about 25 s. A second lease reuses the same emulator in 5 s.
  • simlock nuke --delete-devices --yes deleted the device and its AVD, and daemon stop left no emulator, qemu or port-5038 adb process.
  • New tests:
    • windows-command.test.ts: the quoting cases, which run everywhere. On Windows only, it also runs a real .bat that reads its arguments with the SDK's own lines and checks that &, |, <>, (), ^, !, a backtick, spaces, ; and a trailing backslash arrive unchanged.
    • prerequisites.test.ts: Windows layouts under platform: "win32".
    • device-root.test.ts: any mode is accepted when there is no uid.
  • tsc --noEmit, oxlint, depcruise, oxfmt --check, lint:comments and lint:tests are clean.
  • I couldn't run the unit suite on Linux. On Windows, many existing tests fail on main too, because MemoryFilesystem assumes POSIX paths. The new tests that use the in-memory filesystem therefore use POSIX-shaped paths with platform: "win32".

Not in this PR

  • The public docs still list macOS and Linux as the supported hosts. Whether to declare Windows supported is your call, so I left requirements.mdx and cli.mdx unchanged. They're still accurate for those platforms.
  • Smaller Windows issues seen while testing:
    • The data-directory warning says mode 666 … run chmod 700 on every start.
    • The npm version check runs the npm shell script with node and fails.
    • CPU and memory read as unavailable.
    • daemon install is unsupported.

Part of #1051; with #1052 it fixes it.

Three things kept the Android driver off on native Windows (callstackincubator#1051):

- SDK discovery looked for the bare tool names. On Windows the SDK
  holds `adb.exe`, `emulator.exe`, `sdkmanager.bat` and
`avdmanager.bat`, so a complete SDK read as missing every tool. With
no `ANDROID_HOME` it also searched only the macOS default; it now
  searches Android Studio's `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Android\Sdk` there.
- Node refuses to spawn a `.bat` without a shell (EINVAL, since
CVE-2024-27980). `NodeProcessRunner` now runs a batch file through
`cmd.exe /d /s /c` with every argument quoted and its metacharacters
escaped twice, once for `/c` and once for the script's own
  re-expansion of `%*`. An argument holding `%`, `"` or a line break
cannot survive that, so it is refused; no SDK call passes one.
- The device root was refused as `wrong-permissions`: Node reports
every writable directory on Windows as mode 0o666. A platform with no
uids already skips the owner check, and now skips the mode check too.

Part of callstackincubator#1051.

The SDK's Gradle-generated scripts read their arguments inside quotes
(`if "x%~1" == "x"`, `set CMD_LINE_ARGS=%*`), where `^` is text. Escaping
twice left `^"--version^"` there, and `sdkmanager.bat` failed with "The
syntax of the command is incorrect". Escaping is for the `cmd.exe /c`
line only; the Windows test script now reads its arguments with the
SDK's own lines.

Walkthrough

The change updates root validation for Windows rename races and platforms without UIDs. Android SDK discovery, prerequisite checks, and physical-device classification now use platform-specific behavior. Windows batch commands launch through cmd.exe, with argument validation and process-tree termination.

Changes: Root permission validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Root publish and permission validation
src/core/device-root.ts, src/core/device-root.test.ts, src/core/AGENTS.md
On Windows, certain rename failures yield to validation of an existing root. Mode-bit checks run only when a UID is available. Tests and guidance cover these cases.

Windows Android support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform-aware SDK discovery and prerequisites
src/drivers/android/sdk-paths.ts, src/drivers/android/prerequisites.ts, src/drivers/android/prerequisites.test.ts, src/drivers/android/AGENTS.md
SDK lookup accepts a platform and uses Windows default roots and .exe or .bat tool names. Prerequisite checks pass the selected platform to path resolution. Tests cover Windows SDK discovery and missing tools.
Platform-aware physical-device classification
src/drivers/android/physical-handler.ts, src/drivers/android/physical-handler.test.ts
Device parsing uses the selected platform. On Windows, devices without a USB token are treated as USB unless their serial matches a network or emulator pattern. Tests cover Windows and Linux results.

Windows batch-file process handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Batch launch and process termination
src/ports/windows-command.ts, src/ports/process-runner.ts, src/ports/windows-command.test.ts, src/ports/AGENTS.md
Windows .bat and .cmd commands launch through cmd.exe. Batch arguments containing %, ", or line breaks are rejected. Wrapped processes use tree termination, and process handles report the first requested kill signal.

Suggested reviewers: v3ron

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 88876

This change fixes Android driver startup on native Windows and looks mergeable. One small edge case remains: a kill request that arrives after a batch wrapper has already exited could be reported as a kill rather than a successful exit. Fixing it is optional follow-up work.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 88876

Windows support removes a device-root permission check without establishing equivalent Windows access protection. A shared or permissively configured root could expose managed-device data to another local account. The default home-directory location, ownership markers, and unchanged checks on UID-capable hosts limit the exposure. Batch launching adds explicit input restrictions, but Windows-specific failure and recovery behavior remains partly unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: UID-less root validation now accepts correctly marked directories without establishing owner-only filesystem access. No equivalent Windows ACL validation replaces the removed mode check. Where inherited or configured ACLs permit another local principal access, that principal can read or alter managed-device state despite successful root validation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the configured host-local device root and managed-device state beneath it, potentially covering multiple emulators using that root. Exploitation requires effective filesystem access by another principal; the inspected path does not establish remote arbitrary root selection or a fleet-wide authorization bypass.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The two retained findings map to one weakened privacy control. A UID-less daemon can now accept or create a marked root without validating equivalent owner-only access. If that root inherits or already has permissive ACLs, another account can access the device state without defeating the marker checks. The default home-directory location is meaningful counterevidence, but actual Windows ACL protection remains unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The batch-launch boundary uses a fixed cmd.exe /d /s /c template, quotes and caret-escapes accepted arguments, and rejects percent signs, quotes and line breaks before spawning. ComSpec comes from the host process environment. Windows-only tests model SDK-style argument re-expansion, but their presence is not evidence that all shell configurations were exercised.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Wrapped Windows processes use taskkill with tree termination and a ten-second timeout. Error or nonzero exit falls back to killing only the live wrapper. Repeated cancellation retains the first requested signal, and tree termination is skipped after wrapper exit. Thus the implementation attempts descendant cleanup, but its fallback does not itself guarantee that every descendant has stopped.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent filesystem privacy as an explicit platform capability rather than inferring it from missing uid. Establish and validate suitable Windows ACLs during root creation and adoption, while retaining POSIX permission validation independently of whether an embedding caller supplies uid.

Add a Windows batch case for spawnStreaming.

The new Windows batch test calls NodeProcessRunner.run, which reaches childLaunch through spawn. spawnStreaming has its own childLaunch call and passes windowsVerbatimArguments separately. The runner tests reference no .bat or .cmd path, so a regression that drops the cmd.exe wrapper or argument quoting in spawnStreaming would not fail any test.

Add a Windows-only test that runs the same argument-echoing batch file through spawnStreaming. Assert that the received arguments equal the input arguments.

`kill()` on Windows signalled only the child, which for a batch file is
the `cmd.exe` wrapper, so a timed-out or aborted `sdkmanager` left its
Java running. A wrapped batch launch is now ended with `taskkill /T /F`
while the wrapper is alive, which also ends what the script started.
`taskkill` makes the wrapper exit with code 1 where `child.kill`
reports a signal, so the handle reports the signal it sent, and a
timeout still reads as one (`code: null`). Every other Windows child is
killed as before.

…ows' rename refusal

Two daemons starting at once both stage a device root and rename it into
place. On POSIX the loser's rename fails EEXIST or ENOTEMPTY, and it
validates the winner's root. Windows refuses with EPERM (or EACCES), so
the loser refused its own root as `unreadable` and ran without that
platform. Seen live: a `simlock status` auto-launch raced a scheduled
`daemon start`, and the surviving daemon had no Android driver.

An EPERM or EACCES from that rename is now a lost race when the root is
there afterwards, and the root is validated as usual; with nothing there
it is still refused.

fix(core): device root survives Windows' rename refusal (callstackincubator#1053)
Simlock counts a transport as USB only when `adb devices -l` lists a
`usb:` path, which adb on Windows never prints, so `simlock device add`
refused every phone there as network-only ("only USB-connected devices
can be enrolled"). On Windows the serial now tells the kinds apart: a
`host:port` or an mDNS service name is a network transport, an
`emulator-<port>` an emulator, and anything else a USB device. Every
other host still requires the `usb:` path.

Seen live with a Galaxy A70 (SM-A705MN) on Windows 11.

A batch launch on Windows reports the signal it sent when it was killed.
`kill()` recorded that signal even when `cmd.exe` had already exited and
only a grandchild still held its output open, so a run that ended with
code 0 came back as killed. The signal is now recorded only while the
child still runs, which is also when `killProcessTree` signals it.
