Modifies the ClusterObjectSet lister to only list revisions owned by the ClusterObjectDeployment - in addition to those within the same group. Un-owned or foreign-owned ClusterObjectSets within the same group will not be archived even when past the revision limit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Revision listing and allocation now consider only ClusterObjectSets owned by the deployment, so unrelated revisions in the same group no longer affect revision numbering or retention.
    • Pruning preserves unmanaged ClusterObjectSets in the same group.
    • Deadline-aware rate limiting now considers revisions owned by the deployment, avoiding interference from revisions owned by others.
    • Deployment ownership checks now count only matching, deployment-owned ClusterObjectSets and ignore unrelated objects in the group.

Walkthrough

ClusterObjectDeployment revision listing and deadline-aware rate limiting now filter ClusterObjectSets by deployment group and controller-owner UID. Indexes and tests cover owner-based lookup, foreign-owned revisions, and pruning behavior that preserves an unmanaged set.

Changes: Revision isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register controller-owner lookup
internal/object-controller/controllers/indexes.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/indexes_test.go
SetupIndexes adds an index for controller-owner UIDs. The index test checks matching, unknown, non-controller, and absent owner references.
Filter revisions by deployment owner
internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_test.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/progress_deadline_test.go
Revision listing and deadline-aware rate limiting now use both group and deployment UID. Unit tests cover foreign-owned revisions and revision allocation.
Verify pruning retains unmanaged revisions
test/e2e/features/group.feature, test/e2e/steps/steps.go
The pruning scenario checks that an ownerless set remains while counting only sets owned by the deployment.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title uses the required ✨ icon and names the main change, which is that the ClusterObjectDeployment lister now lists only owned revisions. The changeset matches this. The lister now filters ClusterObjectSets by deployment UID as well as group, the tests and e2e steps are updated to match, and the PR objectives state the same goal.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the purpose and effect of the change. It says the lister now includes owned revisions along with same-group revisions, and that unowned or foreign-owned ClusterObjectSets in the same group are not archived past the revision limit. The template's other sections are unchanged placeholders. The Reviewer Checklist items are not ticked, and the description gives no related issue link. The template asks for a summary and motivation, and the description covers both briefly. The author should still tick the checklist items that apply or confirm they are not needed.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 40.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 6 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Prevent foreign revisions from blocking revision creation.

If an unowned or foreign-owned ClusterObjectSet already has the next name, listRevisions excludes it, nextRevisionNumber selects the occupied revision, and createRevision returns AlreadyExists on each retry. The API enforces the name-to-group/revision relationship, but it does not make the foreign object invalid or provide a separate uniqueness check that lets this create succeed. Keep foreign sets out of rollout and pruning, but account for occupied names when allocating a new revision.

Update revision allocation in nextRevisionNumber and the createRevision flow to
account for names occupied by unowned or foreign-owned ClusterObjectSets,
advancing to an available revision instead of repeatedly attempting the occupied
name. Keep listRevisions ownership filtering intact so foreign sets remain
excluded from rollout and pruning.

Leaving this here for the moment to get a clarification - what should the behavior be in this case?

@dtfranz I recommend leaving the foreign ClusterObjectSet unchanged and skipping the occupied revision name. Keep the ownership filter for rollout, status, and pruning.

For example, if deployment example owns revision 1 and a foreign object occupies example-2:

  1. Try to create example-2.
  2. If the name belongs to an unowned or foreign-owned object, do not adopt, archive, update, or delete that object.
  3. Advance to revision 3 and try to create example-3.
  4. Stop with a clear error if allocation reaches ClusterObjectSetMaxRevision.

An AlreadyExists response can also result from a successful earlier create that the cache has not observed yet. That case needs a separate check so a retry does not create an unnecessary revision.

The supplied code currently retries the same occupied name. nextRevisionNumber sees only owned revisions, and createRevision returns AlreadyExists without changing the next allocation.

Skipping is my recommendation, not an established requirement in the PR description. If the intended policy is instead to stop on a name collision, that is a valid design choice. In that case, report the conflicting name clearly and document that the user must remove the collision before rollout can continue. The behavior to avoid is an unexplained, indefinite “waiting for new revision to be created” state.

Learning: In operator-framework/operator-controller, ClusterObjectSet names of the form <group>-<revision> are a controller convention, not an API-enforced relationship between metadata.name and spec.group/spec.revision. In internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, nextRevisionNumber counts same-group revisions. createRevision must validate an AlreadyExists object by spec.group, spec.revision, and the template-hash label rather than owner references; this identity model also supports the future adoption path.

[P1] Preserve whole-group revision allocation

I reproduced this on the current head. With an archived ownerless or foreign-owned example-1 in group example and no owned revisions, the new filter excludes it from the list passed to nextRevisionNumber. Every reconciliation then attempts example-1 again and returns AlreadyExists. A foreign set occupying the next revision name similarly blocks an upgrade.

docs/designs/object-controller/clusterobjectdeployment.md explicitly requires allocation above the maximum group revision, including archived and foreign members. Use the whole group for revision-number allocation, while retaining ownership filtering for rollout, status, deadlines, and pruning.

The first-name and next-name regression cases pass on base a4d3af99 and fail on head 01548d9b, returning the same AlreadyExists error over three consecutive reconciliations.

Add an owner-exclusion case to the deadline rate-limiter test.

Create an active, same-group, ownerless revision with a higher revision number and the same template hash. Place it beside the deployment-owned revision and assert that the owned revision still determines the deadline. Without this case, a regression to the previous group-only query can select the ownerless revision and change the deadline without failing the test suite.
